The story, Leaving is set in Tanzania.

A woman raises her five children alone after

the early death of her husband. After the two elder girls get married and the eldest
son acquires a job, the mother focuses on the two younger ones, Aloo and the
youngest daughter.

Scene 1
Mr Datoo , a former teacher inspires Aloo to think of furthering his education
overseas in medicine in America.

Scene 2
Aloo wrote letters to universities in America to get information on further studies
there. Mother just smiled at all this busy letter-writing.

Scene 3
Aloo was offered a course in agriculture in a local university. He was not interested.
Then, a letter from the California Institute of Technology came offering him place
and scholarship.
(Dialog)

Scene 4
Mr Velji a school officer said that the offer from California Institute of Technology
would be good for Aloo.
(Dialog)

Scene 5
Mother asked to see the prospectus indicating she was giving permission. Aloo was
very excited that he would be able to learn about many interesting things in
America.

Scene 6
Aloo sent a letter from London to mother and talked about the new and exciting
things he saw.

Mother could not help but wonder what the future held for her and Aloo.
