STEC Nutrition Month 16, Officially Commences

To emphasize how crucial the first few stages of development for a baby, Science and
Technology Education Center launches its annual Nutrition Month celebration on the 1st of
July, 2016 at the STEC Performing Arts Center, with the theme, First 1,000 days ni baby,
pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan.

The program is participated by the elementary and both junior and senior high school
students, teachers, assistant principals, principal and other school staffs. Various activities
were performed to truly imprint the essence of this years theme to the minds of the
students. Among these are Poster and Slogan Making Contest and Nutri-Quiz.

During the program, a speech was given my Mr. Bryant C. Acar, highlighting the
importance of exclusive breastfeeding and how important a mothers care is towards the
holistic development of a child as they grow and bring about a better quality of life.
Department of Education, in partner with National Nutrition Council (NNC), aims to
promote holistic approaches in spreading the importance of various feeding practices to
children in their early stages of development so as to create a strong foundation as they
grow up.
They seek to focus on exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of a child and giving
the appropriate food for them after that phase, while promoting collaboration among
families and stakeholders. Specifically, the Early Childhood Care and Development
Intervention Package (ECCD-IP) is to reduce mortality and morbidity rates among children
0-23 months old, reduce the prevalence of stunting and wasting among children 0-23
months old and increase the percentage of children 0-23 months old meeting
developmental milestones.
With the help of this activity, students, even at their young age are aware of nutritional
issues that may arise in the populace if they werent observing the proper nutritional
practices and may this activity serve as an avenue in creating a stronger and healthier
nation.

STEC holds simultaneous earthquake drills

An earthquake drill was conducted in Science and Technology Education Center


(STEC) on the 23rd of July, 9 a.m., to test the disaster preparedness measures of schools
in Lapu-Lapu City. The drill was attended by students, teachers, principals and school
staffs of STEC in both elementary and high school as well as the Lapu-Lapu City College.
Over 200 people participated the said event. First aid kits were prepared in each
and emergency maps were also plastered on the walls, where it can be easily seen. The
drill simulated conditions before, during and after an earthquake hit a specific area. The
participants were oriented what to do in case such phenomena will happen.
They were tasked to duck, cover and hold, after five minutes, the students went out
of the classroom and proceeded to the evacuation area, which is the open field.

Red Cross volunteers were also present and practiced what to do in case
students or teachers in the facility will get injured. After the drill, the school staff,
along with the Red Cross officials discussed on various precautionary measures to
be done in times of calamity.
The objectives of this earthquake drill it to heighten level of awareness and
preparedness among the citizens and promote focus instead of sparking panic.
