Use with Ready Instruction Lesson 12

Dear Family,
This week your child is learning to divide
whole numbers.
Here are some vocabulary words your child is using to communicate
aboutdivision.

quotient: the answer to a division problem.

dividend: the number you divide in a division problem.
divisor: the number you divide by in a division problem.
Your child is learning to divide three-digit or four-digit numbers by a one-digit
number. One way your child can solve a division problem is to find partial
quotients. With this strategy, your child divides using place value. The division
problem below shows how to divide 2,125 by 4.

1. How many groups of 4 in 2,000? 500

2. Subtract 500 groups of 4.
3. How many groups of 4 in 100? 25
4. Subtract 25 groups of 4.

The sum of the partial

quotients is 531. The
remainder is 1.

5. How many groups of 4 in 25? 6

6. Subtract 6 groups of 4.

Altogether there are 500 1 25 1 6, or 531 groups of 4 in 2,125, with one extra

Invite your child to share what he or she knows about dividing whole numbers
by doing the following activity together.

Dividing Whole Numbers Activity

Do an activity with your child to practice dividing a three-digit number
by a one-digit number.
Materials: book with a number of pages in the hundreds

126

127

With your child, choose a favorite book and look at the number of
pages it has.
Suppose you want to read the entire book in a week. How many
pages would you need to read each day in order to finish the book
in a week (7 days)?
Have your child use division to find the answer.
Example: T
 he book has 157 pages.
157 4 7 5 22 R3
You and your child can check the answer to the division problem
by using multiplication. If you have a remainder, remember to add
the remainder tothe product.
Decide what to do if you have a remainder. Will you read one page
each day for the number of days shown by the remainderor will
you read all the remaining pages on the last day?
You and your child can repeat the activity with other favorite books.
