Relate Decimals and Fractions Activity

Do an activity with your child to relate decimals and fractions. You can
use money to relate decimals and fractions because money is counted in
tenths and hundredths. There are 100 pennies in 1 dollar, so one penny
is 0.01, or 1 of adollar. There are 10 dimes in 1 dollar, so one dime is
100

0.1 (or 0.10), or 1of adollar.

10

With your child, collect pennies from around the house. Have your
child write the amount as a decimal and as a fraction.
Example: You have 23 pennies.
Write the decimal 0.23 and the fraction 23.
100

Example: Y
ou have 30 pennies. Write the decimal 0.30 and the
fraction 30. Challenge your child to write the
100

equivalent tenths decimal and fraction: 0.3 and 3 .

Next, collect dimes from around the house and have your child
write the amount as a decimal and as a fraction.

Look for other real-life opportunities to relate decimals and fractions

with your child.
