Lines and their properties in AutoCAD

In AutoCAD you can load all type of lines into the Linetype Manager and
use them later in your drawing.
Procedures:
1- From Format pull-down menu: Click Linetype, Linetype Manager
dialog box will appear on the screen.

- Linetype Manager

2- Click the Load button in upper right corner of the Linetype


Manager dialog box.
Load or Reload dialog box is displayed on top of the linetype
Manager. This dialog box displays all available linetypes for you to
choose from and load into the linetype manager and use later in
your drawing.

- Load and Reload Linetypes dialog box.

Changing properties of lines: AutoCAD properties palette will allow


you change lines properties such as: color, width, shape, layers, etc..
1- From the Modify pull-down menu click Properties > Properties
palette is displayed on the screen.

2- From the properties palette click the select object button as


shown in the figure above.
3- Select the line or the group of lines you need to modify then move
the cursor on the drawing area and press enter.
True Length of a Line
A line is drawn in true length, TL, when the line of sight is perpendicular
to the line, see figure below.

Principal Lines
Lines that lie or are parallel to a principal plane of projection are called
principal lines.
A FRONTAL LINE lies in or parallel to a frontal plane, see figure below.

Note that the top view of line (ab) is parallel to the folding line F/H.

A HORIZONTAL LINE lies in or parallel to a horizontal plane, see figure


below.

A PROFILE LINE lies in or parallel to a profile plane, see figure below.

BEARING OF A LINE
Bearing is a term used in engineering to describe the direction of a
line on the earth's surface, (Horizontal Plane). The bearing of a line is
the angle of the top view of the line with respect to due north or
south, expressed in degree, see figure below.

SLOPE OF A LINE
The slope of a line is the angle that the line makes with the horizontal
plane.

GRADE OF A LINE
The grade of a line is another way of describing the inclination of a
line with the horizontal plane. Grade is given by the following
expression:
Percent Grade = Vertical rise/Horizontal run x 100
