Whats Happening in
Childrens Ministries?

With the change in worship times on Sept.

18, we will be experiencing some change
in Childrens Ministries as well. At the 9:15
worship hour we will offer Kids Worship!, an
interactive, multi-age Bible story time along
with music. We will move from the Chapel
and music room to Whittler Hall where we
will have more ability to move our bodies
and learn in ways that work for children.
Children will still start in the Sanctuary and
will be dismissed after Childrens Time to
head downstairs. At the 10:30 worship hour
we will continue to offer Whittler Treehouse
and Studio K5 Sunday School where children
learn in a large group/small group format.
If you have any questions about Childrens
Ministries, or are interested in working with
Childrens Ministries, please contact Nancy
Cooper (nancy@moumc.org or 443-3111) or
fill out the tear-off sheet in the bulletin.

Mondays @ 6pm at Hy-Vee, 3100 W. Broadway

Starts Sept. 12
The racial events of this year and the prayers we have
prayed lead us to know more and do more. This is a
start. Reading Jim Wallis book for six weeks and then
spending an additional two weeks identifying our next
action steps as a church with clergy will position us to
begin making new decisions and finding our voice as a
church against racism. Facilitators: Katelyn Price and
Roy Robinson For complete descriptions, visit moumc.

Wednesday Night Live Update

From Strangers to Changers: Connecting our Communities
through Conversation and Action
By Cynthia Beverley
The summer of 2016 has been a tough one, and recent
news headlines reflect much of what concerns us as a
nation. We worry about physical and economic security, as
well as the futures of our young people, and weve been
forced to evaluate the extent to which our countrys core
values have been made available to all of its citizens.
Its difficult to know where to turn for answers, and the
rhetoric of this most unusual political season has offered
little help.
Yet we Christians know that there is a path open to
us. We can approach these challenging issues by using
something that already binds us together, not just our
common faith, but our particular church, the one we
know as Missouri United Methodist Church. Since 1929,
Columbians have been gathering on the corner of 9th and
Locust to work on problems not so dissimilar from the
ones we currently face. But today it seems that we may
be living in a time that calls us to step it up a bit.
As Christians, we believe that we are called to further
Christs kingdom on Earth, to make this world a place that
reflects Jesus teachings. That work takes many forms,
from preaching, teaching, and mission work, to the oldfashioned method of saying to someone, Hey, have you
ever tried my church, Missouri United Methodist? You
know, the big one downtown with the red doors across
from Shakespeares?
But there are other ways to further the Kingdom here in
our community. One of them is a new idea that uses our
creative staff, our large physical plant, and our socially
and intellectually curious members. Heres the plan:
Take an already existing program, Wednesday Night
Live, and re-vision it for this fall. As in the past, have
people gather at tables for discussion and learning. But
this time, instead of traditional programs such as Bible
or book study, devote each Wednesday evening toward
a particular issue, one that fits in with a designated and
publicized monthly theme. We will Invite experts from
different parts of our communityfrom communities
within our Communityto educate us about their topics;
then, we will engage in table discussions, followed by
2 MISSOURI UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

whole-group sharing. The last step every evening will

be to dig even deeper to produce action plans, both as
individuals and sometimes even collectively. Perhaps
most exciting will be the composition of the discussion
tables because in addition to attracting lots of MUMC
participants, our goal is to have a significant number of
folks from throughout Columbia, and not necessarily only
other churched people.
Christ calls us to further his kingdom on Earth. Weve got
to step it up, to mix it up, and, if in the process, some
visitors to this years WNL decide to join us on Sundays,
we will celebrate. But if we simply learn and work
together toward a new and common understanding, then
thats great, too.
Wednesday Night Live will bring us all togetherto learn,
to plan, and to doto move From Being Strangers to
Changers: to Connect our Communities (not simply
our community of Columbia) through Conversation and
Action. We hope youll join us.

September 1, 2016 - Vol. 29, No. 33

SATURDAY: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Reward

The reward for a lifetime of right living is not physical, but emotional and
spiritual.
PRAYER: Help me to be faithful, oh God, to a life worthy of your love and
sacrifice. Direct my paths, and provide me with the strength that I lack.

FRIDAY: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Faithfulness

In Pauls letter of encouragement, he tells Timothy that through it all, he has
kept the faith.
REFLECTION: What does keeping the faith mean to you? Does that concept
create a challenge? If so, how?

THURSDAY: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Steadiness

The world has just watched athletes compete in amazing ways. One goal is to
win, but another is simply to finish what was begun. Sometimes, that is the
greatest challenge.
CONSIDER: Consider a time when you were tempted to stop before you
completed your task. How did that feel? How did it feel to finish?

WEDNESDAY: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Persistence

Fighting has a connotation of conflict between individuals. However, sometimes
the conflict is within ourselves. We are often challenged in our attempt to live
the life we know is right to live.
REFLECTION: What internal conflicts do you face in relation to your faith?

TUESDAY: 2 Timothy 4:3-4 Doubts

Paul suggests that competing doctrines will create challenges for Timothy.
People may not want to hear what he has to share.
CONSIDER: Consider a time when your beliefs were challenged. How did you
react to those different thoughts?

MONDAY: 2 Timothy 4:2 Encouragement

In these verses, Paul encourages Timothy in his ministry. He tells him to be
persistent yet patient in his teaching.
REFLECTION: How has encouragement enabled you to better complete your
tasks? How can you encourage others?
