Culvert Trail
This is a downhill trail built for speed with
jumps, technical sections, switchbacks, high
berms and a CULVERT. Nothing but fun on this
trail, no need to find a hill to get your heart
pumping just run this thing as fast as your
heart can handle, then hit the culvert and hold
on for the ride.
Youll catch air on this ride without using
the jumps along the trail. If you choose to use
the jumps youll catch A LOT of air! Frankly, I
was having all the fun I could handle on the
normal trail for you who love the edge,
you can find it here. The only thing that would
make this ride better is more of it.
The trail ends onto Old Foresthill Road.

Take a
hike
Stevens Trail rich with beautiful sights of
American river, plus a bit challenging
Written by Mary West | photos by Mary West
Late spring is the perfect time to hike the well-maintained Stevens Trail in Colfax before the weather really
heats up. Much of this trail is exposed so make sure you take plenty of water and sun protection for the 9-mile
in-and-out hike that ends at the edge of the American River. I would describe many of the trails in our area as a
walk. Stevens trail is a legitimate hike with significant elevation change, so go prepared.
The beginning of the trail runs parallel along I-80 but the sound of traffic gives way to running water and the
cool air of the wooded trail. Along the way, pine and manzanita line the path with oak and laurel. After crossing
the balance beam across a small creek, the trail opens to the sun and a trail sign sends you to the right. Just
beyond the sign look for a blanket of blue bonnets and clover before you head into the canyon. Not far along,
the trail splits, go left along the canyon wall. Emerald green ferns seem to spring directly from rocks near the
waterfalls in the shady inside curves that follow the mountain side.
With the high water flows, the rocky water crossing can be slippery and the rocks are often under water.
This crossing is tricky. You can take the bike trail to the water crossing that is flat and wide but you are going to

Rock
Climbing
in Auburns old quarry
Climbing
The remaining rock cliffs left after
the conclusion of active quarrying present a perfect opportunity
for performance of technical rock
climbing. The rock is highly featured
limestone along with other sedimentary rock mixed in. The actual
quarrying process itself has created
large features, which are ideally
suited to climbing.
It is not uncommon to see the
Placer County Sheriff use the Old
Quarry as a practice grounds for
their Search and Rescue Team. So
dont be surprised if on occasion
you see a large group of folks rappel
and jugging the Scale Wall. Please
respect their right to use the area
for this purpose and find a different
wall to climb on until they are done.
History
Technical rock climbing has been practiced in the Old Limestone Quarry located in the ASRA
since the late 1980s. The original climbers established approximately seven rock climbing routes,
which required some amount of fixed protection; pitons and protection bolts. From all accounts,
early climbers were not discouraged or refused recreational opportunities at this time. Early
climbers included Dale Christenson, Eric Kohl, Kirk Arens, and the Hatchet Brothers. On Nov.
18, 1998, Kirk and friends were practicing rope jumping on an elaborate rigging system. Kirk
misjudged the length of his rope jump and was killed in the resultant impact. From this point
forward till 2003, climbers were discouraged from using the Auburn SRA for technical rock
climbing, but it was not technically illegal to climb there. In 2004, the ASRA created a memorandum banning technical climbing which was in effect until October 2012, where through the
hard work of CRAGS (Climbing Resource Advocates for Greater Sacramento), the Access Fund,
and local climbers the ban was lifted and climbing could legally resume in the Quarry. Climbers
in the early 2000s started re-exploring the area for rock climbing routes and currently there are
almost 50 established routes within the Auburn State Recreation Area. These routes cater to
climbers of all levels from easy, moderate, and hard levels of climbing.

Most people would not put art in the same category as heavy
machinery, but that is not the case with Nicholson Blown Glass.
Many different types or equipment are used in making these glass
pieces of art. How it is done is quite remarkable. Three hundred
pounds of molten clear glass are kept at extreme temperatures 100
percent of the time. Never to be cooled. It is kept in a furnace of
2,200 degrees. HOT! These types of machinery are very uncommon
to an art studio and yet for Nicholson Blown Glass it is just another
day of creating masterpieces.
Husband and wife, Rick and Janet Nicholson, began Nicholson
Blown Glass over 30 years ago when they moved to Auburn. With
Ricks background in pottery and Janets in photography making glass
creations was the perfect combination of their two skills.
In photography, you learn to focus on detail and see color
clearly, Janet said.
There is so much depth of color to glass that to an untrained eye it
might go unnoticed. Being able to differentiate between the two like
a photographer has proven a skill for each awe-inspiring creation.
Rick Nicholsons abilities with pottery have also proven a unique fit
for his glass art work.
Not only are you dealing with shape and form and color; with
glass blowing, you are keeping things on center, much as the same
with pottery, Rich said.
Everything has a balance. Rick and Janet have combined their
talents and discovered a balance.
There is no end to learning when it comes to blowing glass. Even
Rick, who has been in this trade for years, is still inspired to learn
more. Their shop has expanded in the last few years with what
designs are offered. Glass can be blown into many different shapes.
Some are figurines, bowls, contemporary artwork, vases, even urns,
and much more. Rick wished to create horses for his equine loving
wife. After a class with world-renowned Italian glass sculptor, Pino
Signoretto, and a year of honing his skills, Rick was finally ready to
present his glass horses, amongst other new feats. Anything that is
worth having takes time and the patience Rick has to making his art
perfect truly shows in the quality of his work.
Rick and Janets vivid imaginations have led to some incredible
designs. Each one is carefully thought out. However, until it is
finished, it could turn out any unique way.
There is a big investment when you try something new. You can
have an idea and go toward it but each piece is going to be unique;
you wont know until they are done. Sometimes we make two just to
get one, Janet said.

journey in the Air Force had taken him all over the world. He served in
London, Thailand, North Carolina and Germany. From 1967- 1970 Dwelle
flew with NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) then with the
Royal Navy and RAF Exchange Officer at the British Fighter Command HQ
in London.
I was the only Yank in the headquarters, Dwelle laughed.
His last few years serving in the Air Force were spent as the Chief of
Fighter Operations for NATO (Northern Area of Operation) in Germany,
France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Denmark.
In 1982, Tom Dwelle returned home, retired from the USAF as a
Lieutenant Colonel, and was ready to take the oil business by storm with
his steady hunger for flight fulfilled.
Dwelle is a three-time national champion from the Reno National
Championship Air Races with his Sea Fury plane named Critical Mass. It
is during these races where Dwelle met his wife, Peggy, who would race
and found passion in flying.
Air races are no easy feat and are filled with dangers only a pilot could
fathom, but Dwelles fervor kept him racing and even trickled down to
his sons who have flown alongside him. During races, he may fly up to
550 miles per hour. Though he has retired from racing, Dwelle can still
be caught flying his various aircrafts for enjoyment, as well as during air
shows and more.
It helps that the Flyers headquarters is located right next to the Auburn
Airport. Dwelle at anytime can walk into one of the four aircraft hangers
owned by Flyers or his family and take any one of the planes for a spin.
Even his beloved racer Critical Mass has seen some TLC in a family
endeavored makeover that has taken 10 years to complete. All the parts
are brand new and show the love and care Dwelle has for the aircraft.
With enough adventure to last up to three lifetimes, Dwelle has seen
and done more than many ordinary people. He is beloved by Auburn
locals, fellow pilots, his family and his employees.
We dont have customers, we have guests, and we dont have
employees, we have team members, he said.
With Flyers vision of the future including a move toward alternate
forms of energy and their already tremendous success, Flyers is headed
toward grander achievements. Plus with the Dwelle family at the helm
for continuing generations, the world is in for some more incredible
stories.

three-generation-old recipes
Written and photos by Kim Palaferri
Liu Mandarin Kitchen opened its doors in June of 2015 with high hopes
of sharing a new kind of dumpling and Chinese cuisine. Its the first time
that Sunny Liu and her husband, Brian Farrell, ventured into owning their
own restaurant, serving decadent dishes from family recipes that date
back three generations.
Sunny Liu and her sister chef Yan Liu, grew up in the town of Shen
Yang in Northern China, approximately 100 miles from North Korea. The
area is famously known throughout China for having the same type of
dumplings that the Liu family grew up eating.
Their grandfather owned a small dumpling house in Northern China and
for the girls; good dumplings were a staple in their home. The girls father
learned the craft from his father and made them for his own family.
Sunny said that as a young child, their father would make the fresh
dough dumplings, but encouraged them to stay back from the kitchen
for safety reasons. She said she would watch and observe every step
her father did as he methodically prepared the dumplings from scratch.
She watched him cut vegetables with precise-knife skills; never was she

Sunny and chef Yan spend a few hours each day prepping ingredients for the restaurant,
including making 10 pounds of dough. Vegetables are chopped to perfection. Each dumpling is
rolled out and handmade in perfect uniform and then boiled to perfection, and then seared off
where they are moist and bursting with flavor. Patrons can observe them make the dumplings
through a glass window in the front of the restaurant.
The dipping sauce is a mixture of sweet, spice, and salt.
Some other favorite dishes are the fried rice, slow-cooked pork ribs, Summer Noodles, Five
or Three Color Salad. Sunny uses her precision knife skills to create each color salad. The
Five Color Salad is fresh tasting and crisp with all fresh ingredients like green beans, potato,
cucumber, carrot, and yellow and green pepper. Sunny said that this is her own recipe.
The restaurant continues to transform with growth of customers and a new chef.Sunny
said they are adding to the menu with a new chef with different cultural delicacies of China,
including beef, chicken, shrimp and broccoli, or one of the other spicier dishes like the Hu
Nan-style plates.
As customers walk in, Sunny greets them with a smile, and through conversations
discovers what might be a good culinary fit for them. She explains the dumpling-making
process and tradition. Many of their customers come in from recommendations by friends who
encourage them to try the dumplings, either pork, seafood, or vegetable.
When customers return, she will typically greet them with a smile, and by name, but also
remember what they ordered last time.

In addition to nearby farms, theyve also developed relationships with
local vintners and brewers.
Weve recently had success with Great Basin Brewery, right out of
Reno-Sparks, and were featuring Sacramentos Rubicon in our beer-battered
fish and chips, Jones said. We do Anderson Valley beers, we do 21st
Amendment brewery out of San Francisco, we have Anchor Lager on draft.
And we do Fawnridge and Nevada City wines, we do a lot of local wineries
as well.
Chef Antonio Avila, who has been creating comfort foods with Maxs
since 1987, sums up the secret to the restaurants success.
Consistency, quality, good customer service, fresh quality foods, and we
make sure customers are satisfied, he said.

swimming

Written by Julie Miller | Photos by Jeremy Burke
Throughout the Gold Country, temperatures warm up in the summer. Its important to know where to go to cool off.
Thankfully, the foothills are a gold mine when it comes to swimming holes.
Caution is in order, however, anyone who regularly reads the local papers knows that the river takes few lives each
year. Please be safe, as the water can not only change from one season to the next, but from day to day.
Now to find a cool spot. After polling a few locals, here is a list places to take a dip this summer.
While this is not a complete list, it has options to fit families, teens and nature lovers.

Formerly Auburns municipal swimming pool. In the
1900s there were concession stands and lifeguards. Today,
it is still a popular spot for picnics and swim parties,
however, there are no lifeguards. The pool, surrounded
by rugged cliffs is just above the Middle Fork of the
American River joins the North fork.
Getting there: Park at the confluence and walk around
the green gate to the steep fire road. After hiking less
than a quarter of a mile, pass Stagecoach Trail and go 40
steps, look for an unmarked, but well-used narrow trail on
the right. If youre with children, hang onto them as there
are steep drop-offs. As the trail descends, it will go under
Foresthill Bridge and pass a small waterfall. The trail ends
after a climb down some large boulders that surround the
pool.
Local tips: This can be crowded in the afternoon, arrive
early if you like swimming with less people.

This is a popular spot where the
Middle Fork of the American River
and the North Fork come together.
And, its not far from Auburn. Water
levels here are more consistent since
its controlled upstream by Lake
Clementine.
Getting there: From I-80, take
Highway 49 South toward Cool. Go
2.8 miles and find a place to park near
the bridge. There will be trails from
the parking areas to the river.
Local tips: There can be many
people here during the hot days of
summer, but there is a lot of beach
area to accommodate them.

Oh my darling Clementine: Upper Lake Clementine is an

Ponderosa Bridge
Weimar on American
River
This pony truss bridge
was built in 1935. It is 222.1
feet long and 11.8 feet wide.
There is a $10 parking fee.
But with the cost comes
porta pottties and rangers
patrolling the area. There is a
hiking trail from the river that
goes up to Codfish Creek,
about 1.5 miles. At the
end of the trail is a 50-foot
waterfall.
Getting there: From I-80,
take the Paoli or Weimar
Cross exit and turn right
onto Ponderosa Road, go 5.8
miles. This bumpy dirt road,
most cars should be able to
handle it, but an SUV might
be more comfortable, will
wind down to the American
River.
Local tips: Families might
want to leave before noon.
The crowd can get rowdy in
the afternoon. Drinking is
allowed at the river, but no
glass bottles.

Emigrant Gap /
North Fork, North Fork campground
For the more adventuresome, this is a 45-minute drive from
Auburn, plus a 20-minute difficult hike to the swimming hole. But
it is beautiful. Theres a 20-foot waterfall that drops into a 30foot hole and a 15-foot waterfall drops that into a 25-foot hole.
Getting there: From I-80, take Laino Road exit, turn onto Texas
Hill road. Take this all the way down to North Fork Campground.
The entrance to the trail for the waterfalls is at the back of the
campground. Ask any camper where it is.
Local tips: Kids not recommended. Wear good shoes as the
trail is rough and even the most experienced hikers slip. And
dont wear sunglasses in the pools, waterfalls can easily claim
them.

The time spent with your horse is precious. For those who compete in equestrian sports, those few minutes in the ring may not satisfy your
craving to spend more hours in the saddle. If youve been longing to hit the trails and really ride, its time to discover endurance riding.
With introductory, fun rides of 10-15 miles, and then the competitive distances of 25-35 miles (limited distance) or 50-100 miles (endurance
distance), there is no doubt this sport will bring you and your horse closer in partnership.
The nonprofit American Endurance Ride Conference, now in its 43rd year, welcomes riders of all ages and equines of all breeds.
Headquartered in Auburn, the Endurance Capital of the World, AERC has 5,000 members across the U.S. and Canada, with the largest
concentration in Northern California.
The ride that started it all and remains THE ride that draws more people to the sport of endurance riding than any other: The Tevis Cup (real
name: Western States Trail Ride 100). Begun on a dare in 1955, the riders and horses traverse 100 miles of the Sierra from Squaw Valley to
Auburn in a true test of horsemanship and stamina.
The 2016 running of the Tevis saw Karen Donley, of Palm Springs, come in first with her horse Royal Patron, in a ride time of 14 hours and 33
minutes.
Other local rides include the American River Classic, held each spring, which follows the American River from Granite Bay to Auburn. This
ride is the oldest sanctioned 50-mile ride in the world.
The Gold Country ride is held each summer in the Georgetown area, although the 2016 ride was canceled due wildfire.
Hundreds of endurance rides are held annually around the U.S. and Canada, with everything from small, low-key rides to ultra-competitive
races.
Most people with a reasonably conditioned horse or mule will be able to complete a 25-mile ride within the allowed six-hour time frame.

Auburn Iron Works has been operating under various names as a blacksmith shop
for over 140 years. Built over the Boardman Canal when the Central Pacific Railroad
reached East Auburn and the depot there was Auburns bustling hub, Auburn Iron
Works continues to provide necessary services to the community through old-fashioned blacksmithing and state-of-the-art welding technology and automation. This
thriving business provides both custom fabrication and vital equipment repair. In
1973, the Harris family purchased this blacksmith shop through their parent company
Harris Industrial Gases, founded in 1936 and now a four-generation family corporation. Theyve added a complete steel warehouse, medical, industrial and specialty gases,
along with a full line of welding equipment and supplies.
