Coming together to honor fallen heroes

Police, fire-rescue, businesses and residents gather for Fallen Hero First Responder Softball Tournament
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
It was a night to come together
and have fun. It was a night to celebrate the lives of Evesham
Townships fallen heroes.
On Aug. 30, eight teams of softball players gathered at The Diamonds at Arrowhead Park for the
townships inaugural Fallen Hero
First Responder Softball Tournament.
It was there under the setting
sun that players, residents and
local businesses gathered to
honor the lives of Marlton residents Matthew Hempel and Edward Zubrzycki.
Hempel served nearly 19 years
with Evesham Fire-Rescue as a
firefighter and lieutenant before
he passed away suddenly on Feb.
14 at the age of 42.
Zubrzycki served as a detective
sergeant with the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office and
had been with the office since 1996
before he also passed away suddenly on May 7, 2015, at the age of 43.
Both men left behind wives and
children.
Teams at the event included two
teams fielded from the Evesham
Police Department, two by Evesham Fire-Rescue, and teams from
the mayor, Evans Elementary
School, the Marlton Business Association and Evesham Mortgage.

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

Eveshams first responders listen to the national anthem at the start of Evesham Townships Fallen Hero
First Responder Softball Tournament on Aug. 30. The event raised money for the families of first responders and members of law enforcement who have passed away.
Although the event was free for
the public, donations from the
tournament will go to the Hempel
and Zubrzycki families.
To start the event, Mayor
Randy Brown asked the teams to
line up along the first and third
baselines of the same field for a

brief prayer and opening ceremony where Brown spoke of Eveshams community spirit.
I just want to thank every one
of you for not only your time and
your volunteering for tonight, but
for your dollars youre putting
out to help the great families of

this community, Brown said. I

thank you from the bottom of my
heart for doing what you think is
the best thing to do for our great
town.
Following Brown was Evesham
Fire-Rescue Chief Bryan Ward,
who said the department and

township lost Hempel too early in

life and so the department would
play in his honor.
On the back of the fire jerseys, youll see No. 10. No. 10 was
Matts line number for the fire department and obviously we all
wear No. 10 in honor of Matt
tonight, Ward said.
To speak on behalf of the Evesham Police Department was
Chief Christopher Chew, who
said the police were also wearing
a number on the back of their jerseys with No. 7510 to represent
Zubrzyckis badge number with
the Burlington County Prosecutors Office.
When you look up the definition of hero, Ed truly was a hero.
Just a great guy, always a smile on
his face, great family man, and
there is no doubt in my mind that
he would be wanting us out here
celebrating his life, Chew said.
Also speaking at the event was
Congressman Tom MacArthur,
who praised Evesham and its residents for taking the time to
honor the work and sacrifice of
the townships first responders.
Why do we call police, fire,
EMS first responders because
you show up immediately and
you show up always, MacArthur
said. You make the decision before the event happens that youre
going to be there no matter what
the risk is.

Local elections dont have to get out of hand

Richard Donnelly

he topic of campaign funding

rears its ugly head about this
time every year. While its an
issue that is associated with biggerbudget elections such as for Congress,
governor and president, its not something that passes by local elections.
And thats a shame a real shame.
Elections at every level should be
about whos right for the job, not who
can raise, and spend, the most money.
Campaign funding reform has been
discussed, and implemented, time and
again, but its not an easy thing to control. There are plenty of loopholes,
and it can be hard to track.
At the local level, though, it should
be easier and it should be regulated.
A few years ago, one municipality
passed a pay-to-play ordinance that we
believe every town in New Jersey
should adopt.
Moorestown originally passed an ordinance to align its campaign contribution limits to that of the state

Your thoughts
Do you think municipalities should have
strict pay-to-play ordinances? Or do you
think local politics can govern itself?

$2,600 for professional business entities and $7,200 for political action committees. Residents complained,
though, and for good reason. Those
numbers were a substantial increase
from the towns original limits of $300
and $500, respectively.
After signatures were gathered opposing the change, Moorestown reversed the ordinance and returned its
contribution limits to the lower levels.
It was a good move, and one that we
encourage other towns to make, if
they havent already.
Were all for pay-to-play ordinances
that protect local towns from being
run by outside influences such as corporations or other political entities.
Local politics, more so than any other

form of government, should be about

the residents of the town.
Local elections should be about the
candidates involved and what they
will do for the town and its residents.
Period.
It shouldnt be about what businesses want to see or political machines
want to see. Its about the people.
We encourage all local councils,
commissions and committees in New
Jersey to pass regulations on contribution limits, if such regulations arent
already on the books.
Now that the kiddies are back to
school, its election season, and as we
watch debates and read about issues
from candidates at the state level and
hear of even more trouble at the federal level its hard not to lose confidence in the honesty and integrity of
politics today.
But local elections and local politics
dont have to be that way, as long as we
control it.

Operation Chill awards kids

with Slurpees for wearing helmets
For a second year, the Evesham
Police Department will partner
with 7-Eleven as it celebrates its
21st anniversary of Operation
Chill.
Each year, 7-Eleven, Inc. helps
thousands of local police officers
recognize the younger generation.
This year, officers from the
Evesham department will be utilizing this partnership to enhance
the departments efforts to promote bike helmet safety and preventing head injuries.
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
head injuries kill an average of

52,000 people per year and send almost half a million youth ages 14
and under to an emergency room
annually.
To help bring awareness, 7Eleven has supplied the Evesham
Department with free Slurpee
drink coupons.
Evesham officers will be handing out these tickets to kids who
are observed wearing a helmet
while riding a bike, scooter,
skates or skateboard.
This is departments way of rewarding those who are properly
protecting themselves against injury.
Our agency is always looking

for unique ways to reach out to

the public we serve and promote a
good cause, said Chief Christopher Chew. Positive community
policing is at the core of any progressive, successful agency. We
pride ourselves in being leaders
in this area.

program
will

In July, Rastellis celebrated its two-year anniversary by inviting

special guests and customers to an anniversary party at its store,
with a portion of all proceeds benefiting the CHOP unit at Virtua
Hospital in Voorhees. On Aug. 26, Ray Rastelli III and Chris Mentzer
of Rastelli Market Fresh handed over a $2,000 check to leaders at
Virtua in hopes of helping the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia at
Virtua become one of the leading pediatric units in South Jersey.

PEASE
Continued from page 7
someone who residents may be
less familiar with is Debra Debbie Pease, DPW administrative
secretary and Evesham Clean
Communities coordinator.
Beyond all DPW services is paperwork, and behind much of
that paperwork is Pease.
So, with the amount of work
Pease does for Evesham Township, and with how few residents
might know her name, Pease was
recently selected by a committee
of township representatives to
win the first-ever Going the
Extra Mile employee recognition award.
The GEM Award program is
the brainchild of Evesham Township manager Tom Czerniecki,
who announced the program
about two months ago as a way to
highlight and honor the work of
township employees who go
above and beyond in their daily
service to the township.
The program, sponsored in
part by the Marlton Business Association, works by having residents and township staff members nominate Eveshams behind-the-scenes employees who
they feel deserve special recognition.
A rotating committee of management, staff and representatives of the townships two labor
unions then recommend a selection for Czerniecki to chose as a
winner each month.
Although Pease was selected as
the winner for July, Pease said
when she got the call from Czerniecki, she wasnt even aware
she had been nominated.
It was a complete surprise,
Pease said. It was wonderful to

be recognized and to be recognized by my department for what

I do. Its a very challenging job,
but its a very rewarding job, too.
Youre never bored, and theres always something coming up.
Pease, who grew up in Marlton,
originally attained her AS in
business administration from
Burlington County College before
then taking time off from work to
raise her children. In 2006, after
having re-entered the workforce,
she became the accounting assistant at Aquatic & Fitness Center
in Cherry Hill.
A few years later in November
2009, Pease found her way to
working for Evesham Township
when she was hired as a temporary secretary for the Department of Public Works. In May
2010, Pease transferred to the fulltime administrative secretary position she holds today.
Two years later, the township
appointed Pease as its certified recycling coordinator, and earlier
this year, Pease received the Municipal Coordinator Award from
the New Jersey Clean Communities Council.
Pease was recognized for creating a litter abatement program in
the township through which she
creates and plans cleanup events
across Evesham and is responsible for 25 volunteer groups, as
well as managing grant funds.
Shes even planning a Green
Fair to help residents learn about
sustainability on Oct. 1 from noon
to 3 p.m. at Evesboro Downs.
Being the administrative secretary for Public Works and Evesham's recycling coordinator and
clean communities coordinator is
all about good customer service
and coordination, Pease said.
My customers consist of not
only our residents, but also our
management team and fellow employees. It is a support role that is

very rewarding.
Pease is quick to point out her
success has only been possible
from working over the years as a
team with the townships management staff and other employees.
I could name many other employees that go the extra mile,
and the biggest part of that is
helping each other shine, Pease
said. If we shine as individuals,
we can be brilliant as a whole.
In addition to being recognized
as GEM Award winner, Pease received a gift card from the Marlton Business Association, was
recognized by the Evesham
Township Council and received a
designated parking spot.
