Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Greetings of peace,
This Sunday celebrates the canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta to Sainthood. Below is a brief bio
on this remarkable woman.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta was born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910 in Skopje (modern Republic of
Macedonia). At the age of 18, she traveled to Ireland to join the Loreto Sisters, and was called Sister Teresa. She
was then sent to India where she made her First and Final Profession of Vows. Sr. Teresa spent 18 years at the
Loreto School in Calcutta, first as a teacher and then the headmistress.
On September 10, 1946, during a train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling, Mother Teresa received an inspiration she
later described as a call within a call. Jesus thirst for love and souls became so clear to her that from then on a
longing to fill HIS thirst took complete control of her heart. Jesus asked her to help the poor people who were
being neglected and to bring HIM into their lives.
Mother Teresa started The Society of the Missionaries of Charity, which was officially established in the
Archdiocese of Calcutta on October 7, 1950. This Order not only professes vows of Poverty, Chastity and
Obedience, but also a fourth for wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor. She also started the
Missionaries of Charity Brothers, a Contemplative branch of the Sisters, The Sick and Suffering Co-Workers and
Lay Missions of Charity, and the Corpus Christi movement for priests. They operate hospices, homes for people
with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, orphanages, schools and many other charitable
undertakings in more than 123 countries.
Mother Teresa received many honors during her lifetime including the Padma Shri by the Indian Government in
1962, the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding
in 1969, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and

Indias highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.
th

She died on September 5, 1997 and was beatified on October 19, 2003. Her Feast Day will be September 5 , the
anniversary of her passing into eternal life.
Mother Teresas life is one of loving God and neighbor, especially the neediest and poorest of the poor. Her
legacy to all of us is in her strength, charity, and unconditional love of God and her faithfulness to his mission for
her on earth.
May we all strive to love our poor brothers and sisters in the spirit of Saint Francis and Saint Teresa of Calcutta!

Executive Director

weekend, September 3 and 4 . This newly written Mass
in the Year of Mercy, was written by the band for the

celebration. It was written by us, for us, fueled by a desire
to mirror the kind of love-in-action we see modeled by the
