IMPACT TO FIELD OF SPECIALIZATION

No task is too simple nor too grand. There are only two things, the worker and the
challenge. The trainee was informed up front that the expectations of work being similar to what
has been taught in undergrad may not be met; that the job was not what the trainee was built for
but where the company really needs people; and that meant doing clerical stuff. Despite all
things, the trainee lead on training, keeping in mind that real life situations also have
compromise, and underemployment is a real thing and a lot better than being unemployed.
Accountancy being the language of commerce, is obviously a concept with vast limits.
Banking being an industry built with capitalism is, of course, within the backyard of
accountancy. Being a trainee in cash division exposed the student to negotiable instruments, and
other liquid assets. The DBP Standard Operating Procedures dictates that a slash sign between
the two payees of an order instrument is interpreted as and rather than an or making it an
instrument to be honored only if both parties are present. The trainee also became exposed to the
concept of a clearing house which includes three business days before an account is debited or
credited. Bank floats became a familiar concept. The trainee was also exposed to the buying and
selling rates of foreign exchange. Also, the DBP being a depository bank of the government,
accepts tax payments from estate taxes to documentary stamp taxes of LGUs. When issuing
managers checks a withholding tax is withheld in recognition of the DBP being a government
instrumentality. In retrospect, the trainee was exposed to whole lot of accounting topics, and in a
question of relevance, it is an astounding yes.
A lot of discouragements from supervisors about choosing the career path they chose was
garnered. Most reasons were because of the extra hours without overtime pay, and work

overtaking their time for family. However, the thing the trainee deliberately admired was the
public service. The way the clients put smiles in their faces after their transactions were
consummated, that is the most vibrant picture of public service in banking, and that thing is what
the job is about.
