CourseDescription&Expectations
WelcometoMathatThrive!
AtThrive,allstudentsareseenasmathematicians.Duringthecomingyear,wewillbeexploring
avarietyofconceptsandapplyingthemtotherealworld.Studentswillbuildontheircurrent
mathskillsbyparticipatingingroupsaswellasworkingindependently.Mathtalks,presenting
andcritiquingsolutions,andcreatingmodelsofourthinkingarejustafewofthewaysthat
studentswillparticipateintheclass.Iencourageallstudentstocomewithanopenmindaswe
beginthisyearsmathematicaljourneytogether.
Vision:
Studentscometoseethemselvesasmathematiciansthroughtheirworkingroupson
openendedinquirybasedmathproblems,throughindividualmathworkattheirpersonallevel,
andthroughminiprojectsthatexploremathintheworld.
ClassroomExpectations:
Wewillbecreatingourclassroomexpectationsduringthefirstweekofschool.Iwillpostthison
mywebsiteunderClassroomAgreement.
ThesewilltieinwithourThriveCommunityAgreement,whichwewillbeputtingintopractice
together:
Treatallcommunitymemberswithkindness,care,respect,andconsideration.
Usecompassionatecommunicationandourconflictresolutionprocesswhenconflictsoccur.
Helpcreateasafe&healthylearningenvironment.
Takeresponsibilityforlearning,aswellasthepursuit&developmentofpassions.

ClassProcedures&Guidelines:
Beginningofclass:Iwillgreetstudentsatthedoor.Studentsthenenterquietly,findtheir
seat,andbeginaDoNow/Warmup/ProblemoftheDayindependently.Pleasebe
ontimetoclass!
Duringclass:
One(1)studentatatimemayleave(withthekey)tousetherestroomorgeta
drinkofwater.
Nostudentswillbeexcusedduringthefirst10minutes,thelast10minutesof
class,orcertainactivities.
Pencilscanbesharpenedbeforeorafterclass.Ifasharpenedpencilisneeded
duringclass,pleaseexchangeyoursforoneinthesharpenedpenciljar.
MaintaintheexpectedVoiceLevelfortheactivity.
Endofclass:Saveworkandclosecomputer,cleanupspacearoundyourarea
(includingsuppliesandtrash),packupbelongings,andwaitfordismissal.Rememberto
leavetheroominbettershapethanwhenyouentered.
Attendance:
Participationinclassroomactivitiesisvitaltohelpingsupportstudentsinbuildingtheirmath
skillsandunderstandingnewmathconcepts.Iunderstandthatstudentswillhavelegitimate
reasonsforbeingabsentfromclass.Ifyouknowoftheabsenceinadvance(fieldtripfor
anotherclass,appointmentsduringtheschoolday,etc),itisyourresponsibilitytocommunicate
thattomeandgetthedaysworkaheadoftime.Pleaseremember,youareresponsiblefor
completingallworkthatismissedwhenyouareunabletoattendclass.

Grading:
Howwillstudentsbegraded?
Studentswillbegradedusingmasterybased(orcompetencybased)grading,whereastudent
demonstratesprogressivemasteryofcontentacrosstheyear.Studentsaregradedonhowwell
theyknowsomethingratherthanwhetherornottheyhavecompletedit.Thrive@Krocusesa
