Thailand Premiere Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket
5 June @ the Coliseum Paradise Multiplex Theatre, Phuket Town
The Phuket Premiere of the Soi Dog Foundation documentary as part of
the Phuket 2010 Film Festival will be screened on the 5th. A 66 minute
documentary produced by Environment Films in association with the Soi Dog
Foundation, the film reveals the day to day challenges of the Foundation and
its human side, one that combines tragedy and compassion with humour and
excitement. It is inspirational and involving throughout and is suitable for the
entire family to watch.
The film starts at 2pm and is followed by a buffet and reception at the
Thavorn Grand Plaza Hotel. Five copies of the documentary signed by John
and Gill Dalley of the Foundation will be given away on the night. Ticket

of the Ao Chalong Yacht Club, with the support of the Tourism
Authority of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand and the Yacht

Cup Regatta, Koh Samui Regatta and Phuket International Marine

anchorages for any season and the diving in the Hon Mun
marine park area is equal to the best in Asia.
North of Nha Trang is Vung Fang Bay, which is populated
by many small islands and has a massive sand dune along
its northern side. Hidden away here is Whale Island, an
eco-friendly resort that has done much to re-grow coral
destroyed by dynamite fishing. In the past, yachts have
based themselves here for weeks to take advantage of the
excellent nearby dive sites and perfect sailing conditions.
It is still early days for marine tourism in Vietnam and entry
procedures can be time-consuming, if not overly expensive.
The authorities do place restrictions on boat movements
but are loosening up slowly and local pilots are no longer
required on foreign-flagged yachts full time.
Former Super-Yacht manager, Alan Goodman is based in Nha
Trang and is the best contact for any yacht wishing to cruise
these waters. He has been instrumental in encouraging a
more open-minded approach towards visiting yachts by
the Peoples Committee and local military officials. He can
arrange all the necessary clearances, provide visas on arrival
and more importantly fuel bunkering for foreign-flagged

In general, the ‘Change and Renewal Principle’ (Doi Moi )
has brought numerous changes in attitude and outlook.
The overall willingness of the government and people to
embrace new business opportunities bodes well for the
future of the country. A marina is being developed further
north at Da Nang and with this there is an expectation that
Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province is a major port on the east
coast of Vietnam. The town itself is considered Vietnam’s
most charming, being in the old French colonial heartland.
Just offshore is the Hon Tre group of islands where there are
some excellent anchorages, great scenery, good snorkelling
and diving and good beaches.
A BAO DAI VILLA

This is the closest anchorage to Nha Trang town, located
below the promontory just east of the main port. Authorities
prefer boats to anchor here in order to clear in. Anchor in 7
metres on the outer fringes of the bay well outside of the
marked shipping channel. The bottom is thick mud and
affords excellent holding.
The beach and shoreline dries completely at low water spring
tides, which makes dinghy trips ashore an arduous and painful
experience. The rustic beach restaurant has even more rustic
showers, toilets and the smallest beer fridge in Vietnam. The
staff are friendly and helpful and will take care of your rubbish
and laundry. They can also arrange ice and a taxi to town.
Water is available on the small ferry quay. Approach the dock
at high tide only and in the early morning to avoid traffic,
wind and swell. Tie off to the dock, bow-to and use the lazy
lines in the water.

The channel is easily navigable although there are hundreds

in 10 metres on the south side in a quiet bay when the swell
is not running.
At anchor in Nha Trang
Anchor in 6-8 metres in front of the beach at the head of
the bay, leaving plenty of room to swing. This well sheltered
indented bay on the south side of Hon Tre Island is free of
swell in any season. Follow the bay up and round to the right,
staying to the south of the numerous fish farms. Behind the
sandy beach is a small resort guarded by a well-endowed
white mermaid statue. The restaurant can open during the
evening by prior arrangement only and serves a selection of
seafood dishes. You can always try your luck bargaining with
one of the fish farms if you prefer to BBQ onboard.

Anchorage can be found in 4-8 metres at either end of the north
coast of this island lying south of Hon Tre. Hon Mun has very
clear water and is popular with the plethora of dive shops based
in Nha Trang town. The coral and variety of fish here make it one
of the most visited diving and snorkelling sites in Vietnam.

Beaches Made in Heaven
If you’re here on holiday, you’re almost certainly staying on, or near, a beach, but they’re all different.
Why not rent a car or motorcycle and experience their various charms for yourself?
Nai Yang Beach. Right at the top of the island, just south of Sarasin
Bridge is Nai Yang. The beach has been declared a National Park, but
the public still have free access. There would be an uproar if this were
to change, for this deserted stretch of fine sand fringed with giant
casuarinas is where Thai residents come to picnic and ‘get away from it
all’. Near the bridge there are some small seafood restaurants. Between
November and February, this is where the sea turtles struggle up the
beach to lay their eggs.
Bangtao Beach. About two kilometres north of Surin village, is
Bangtao, home to the exclusive Laguna hotel complex. The north part
of the beach is quiet and has some fine coral for snorkelling. There you’ll
find a lagoon and a small river estuary, which gives on to the beautiful,
tranquil Layan Beach – also a national park.
Surin Beach. In the high season, this beach is good for swimming and
snorkelling, but during the monsoon the onshore winds throw up some
serious waves; great for surfers who know what they’re doing.

Laem Sing Beach. Continuing south, intrepid beachcombers will
encounter this delightful, bijou bay. Nestling between stony headlands,
Laem Sing features sandy coves and rock pools which bear close
inspection. Its unique charm attracts many visitors in the high season.
Patong Beach. Charm is not perhaps the first word that springs to
mind when describing Patong, but the miles of perfect turquoise seas
and powdery sand right next to all the razzmatazz, manages to absorb
hundreds of sun-worshippers, strollers, joggers, volleyballers, etc.
without getting crowded. After sunset, the nightlife pulsates until the
wee small hours.
Tri-Trang Beach. About three kilometres south of the main Patong
Beach you’ll find this tiny bay; well hidden from the normal tourist
beach routes. Tri-Trang Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling
when the tides are high, and at low tide the seas recede to expose a
rocky foreshore. At this time it’s still a delightfully picturesque spot.
Next door, so to speak, is petite Paradise Beach – blessed with crystal
clear waters and pure white sands. There’s a small restaurant which
rents out beach chairs. It rarely gets crowded.
Karon Beach. Further south, and much less frenetic than Patong
is Karon Beach which, however, still caters for large numbers
of visitors. The same serried ranks of deckchairs and beach
umbrellas allows visitors from the frozen north to get the chill out
of their bones, and catch up on the latest best-seller.
Kata Beach. This small bay with palm-lined sand and clean, clear
seas framed by forested headlands and rocky extremities, is truly
delightful. A stretch of road right on the beach side means there
has been no unsightly beach developments. The view out to sea is
dominated by waterless Koh Poo (Crab Island), apocryphally sold
several times to enthusiastic but naive developers. For your soirées there
are bars and restaurants inland within walking distance of the beach,
where you won’t be rushed off your feet. Life here is conducted at a
more leisurely pace.
Kata Noi Beach. Kata Noi Beach is about 700 metres long, and adjoins
Kata Beach to the south. Conveniently accessible from the main road,
Kata Noi Beach with its clear waters and white soft sand is usually
uncrowded. During the rainy season, this can be a dangerous place, so
surfers love it. Equipment can be hired. For the rest of us don’t swim, or
even paddle, if you see a red flag.
Nai Harn Beach. Delightfully framed by rocky, forest-clad hills this
is a truly beautiful bay. On one flank The Royal Phuket Yacht Club
Hotel climbs almost to the skyline, and another hotel dominates the
foreshore. In addition there are a number of bars and restaurants to
welcome beach travellers. On this the most southerly beach the waters
lap gently on the firm, tan sands throughout the dry season. During
the monsoon rains, in contrast, the crashing breakers are impressive –
best admired from the safety of the shore road; definitely not a sight
to miss. Just north of Nai Harn is Ya Nui Beach, a sleepy little bay with
lots of rocky outcrops and good coral; great for snorkelling. The access
is precipitous. Ring the bell, and someone will come and get you.
Rawai Beach. This isn’t really a swimming beach. What you can find
there in profusion, right on the beach, are small restaurants and food
stalls selling grilled seafood. At the eastern end, is a Sea Gypsy village
where there’s a daily market selling fresh fish and prawns, straight
from the fishermen’s nets. This is a great place to rent a longtail boat
to visit nearby islands. Neighbouring Chalong Beach is similar to Rawai
with more tour boats, lots of dive shops and a few excellent seafood
restaurants. It features the longest pier on the island.

• 80 gm Greek yoghurt • 1 gm cumin seeds (toasted

Mix all ingredients together in a small mixing bowl, cover and refrigerate.
Herbed Couscous
• 125 ml couscous • 5 gm fresh parsley (chopped)
• 150 ml chicken stock • 50 gm tomato (diced, half for garnish)
• 10 ml olive oil • 15 gm celery (diced)
• 5 gm scallions (chopped) • Salt
• 5 gm fresh thyme (chopped) • Freshly ground white pepper
Pour the chicken stock into a small pot, add 5 ml of olive oil and salt, and
bring to the boil.
Remove from heat. Stir in the couscous and cover tightly for five minutes.
Remove cover and gently fluff the couscous with a fork to separate the
grains. Transfer to a mixing bowl, and leave to cool for ten minutes. Once
cooled, add the chopped scallions, parsley, thyme, celery, half the tomato and
5 ml of olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper and reserve.
Grilling: Once the grill is hot and ready at medium heat, remove lamb from
marinade and season with salt and pepper. Before grilling, lightly brush the
lamb with some of the oil from the marinade and discard the remainder.
Place the chops on the grill and cook over medium heat. With a pair of tongs,
flip the chops over to cook each side evenly, alternating sides for six to eight
minutes until cooked ‘medium-rare’ to ‘medium’. Remove from the grill to rest
while cooking the vegetables.
Prepare the vegetables for grilling by coating lightly with olive oil and
seasoning with salt and pepper. Place the vegetables on the grill and cook
each side evenly for two to three minutes or until tender. Remove from the
grill and serve when cool. This dish is nice to serve as a main course or can
also go on a platter to share.

He began his formal career as Chef de Commis at La Strada, a popular

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My first feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in
paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, influenced by the ancient Siamese
capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where
the idea is to float away past stresses
and wish for luck and joy from that
moment on.
A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certified Thai Herbalist
and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is offered at Sukko, in packages
lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specific purpose and can
be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal
recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are
totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the
herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your
treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.
I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that
left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began
with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric
Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub
was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but
firmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist
asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses
that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the

feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Safety First or Costly Blunder?
Last month the authorities took a Draconian decision to close European airspace because of a volcanic dust
cloud, resulting in massive disruption to traffic and huge losses to the airlines. The industry argued that the
decision should have been left to them. They say that they regularly make life-and-death judgement calls as
part of their daily operations.
Oh, no. Mount Eyjafjallajokull (easy for you to say) has erupted, and your
idyllic Phuket holiday ends tomorrow. The plan was to return to London.
Suddenly a huge volcanic ash cloud drifts over the United Kingdom and
Northern Europe, and your chances of returning home are reduced to zero.
Airports are closed, aircraft are grounded, and hundreds of thousands of
passengers are stranded.
Last month hundreds of people were left high and dry in Thailand, when the
volcano’s eruption caused the biggest disruption to global air traffic since the
9/11 terrorist attack in 2001.
What are your rights in these circumstances? It can be argued that a
volcanic eruption like this is force majeure (French for superior force), a
catastrophic, unforeseeable event which frees contractual parties from
fulfilling their obligations.
Contrary to popular belief, airlines are not required to compensate
passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled. Compensation is only
required by law, when you’re ‘bumped’ from a flight which is oversold.
Airlines, in general, almost always refuse to pay passengers for financial
losses resulting from a delayed flight. Airlines can’t guarantee their schedules,
because there are so many variables that can impact on them.
There’s also some confusion between ‘compensation’ and ‘expenses’. Airlines
are required to meet expenses such as meals and accommodation for
passengers stranded by a volcanic eruption or other ‘acts of God’, but they
aren’t obliged to compensate them for loss of earnings etc.
So for future reference, how do you cope when flights are delayed or
cancelled? Here are a few tips.
• When booking a flight, remember that an early departure is less likely
to be delayed than flights later in the day, which are more likely to
suffer from ripple effects i.e. the compounding of delaying factors.
You also have more re-routing options early in the day.
• If you’re delayed, immediately ask the airline staff if it will pay for
meals, phone calls, etc.
• If you’ve booked through a travel agent or via online portals such as
Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, then phone them. Often, they’ll be
more sympathetic than staff at the airport.
• In the European Union, which was most affected by the volcano
eruption, the rights of airline passengers are contained in EU
Regulation 261/2004. Of course, you’re not likely to be carrying
a copy of this around, but neither is the ground staff, so give it a
mention. However, be warned. Airlines may seek cover behind the
clause, which says their liability is null and void in, ‘extraordinary
circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all
reasonable measures had been taken’.
What about complaints? If you wish to pursue this course of action, there are
several organizations that you can approach, depending on where you reside.
In the UK, contact the Air Transport Users Council or the Association of British
Travel Agents.
In the USA, the appropriate body is the Aviation Consumer Protection
Division. The USA also has the Customer Service Initiative. This is a voluntary

Khao Phra Thaeo Park contains the only
virgin rainforest left on the island, and is
home to langurs, barking deer, mouse

Inside the Park is Bang Pae Waterfall – a
beautiful, shaded cascade with a pool at its foot where kids can cool off.
Near the waterfall is the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre dedicated
to saving these delightful creatures, which are threatened by

Near the park headquarters is Ton Sai Waterfall with a
restaurant alongside – a delightful setting for lunch. To get to
Khao Phra take the north road from Phuket City towards the airport and turn
right at Thalang after 20 kilometres. The park gates are reached after seven
kilometres.
Sirinat Marine National Park on the northwest of the island comprises
Nat Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Kao. The park is a fascinating combination of
mangrove swamp and shallow coral reef. There’s a visitors’ centre. Again take
the north road and turn left onto highway 4031 after Thalang. There’s another
pretty waterfall at Kathu. From Phuket City take the Patong road and turn
right opposite the Loch Palm Golf Club. Like all the falls, Kathu is at
its best during the rainy season.
Phuket Zoo: For a quieter day out, how about a trip to the
zoo? It’s set in lush tropical gardens shaded by giant trees
with intriguing paths which invite you to stroll from island
to island. The zoo has a host of multilingual and willing staff
who will be happy to answer those eternal ‘why’ questions
of the young and curious. There are crocodile, monkey and

Going to the doctor is something we all hate to do – sometimes
we feel ’no news is good news’. For others, financial considerations
may be a factor. Self medication can be the answer. But remember,
they don’t call them ’drugs’ for nothing.
Phuket has many pharmacies, either attached to hospitals or scattered
throughout the community and these pharmacies stock an impressive
range of medications. By law, all pharmacies are required to be licensed
and to operate under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. The
importation and manufacturing of medications is regulated by the
Ministry of Health.
Medicines are either restricted for general use, being available on
prescription only or are freely available to the public. Restricted drugs
such as narcotics can be dangerous if used inappropriately. y Viagra

Common over-the-counter drugs, such as mild pain-

which have been approved by the Ministry of Health, and some which
have not. Currently there are many illegal generics available which have
