Directions for Questions 31 50: Read the following passages carefully and
answer as directed.
Passage I
The Indian information technology and business process outsourcing industries
have been witnessing a galloping growth of 25% a year and they boast
of$17.2 billion export revenue for 2004-05. The National Association of Software
Service Companies (NASSCOM), the apex body of the IT industry, expects
exports to go up to $22.3 billion, or by 30%, in the current financial year. A large
and talented workforce and the relatively low wages have enabled the country to
cornera sizeable share of a booming global IT and related services business.
India accounts for 20% of the combined talent pool of 28 low-cost countries. But
the demand appears to far outstripthe supply of quality workforce if the latest
report from NASSCOM is anything to go by. The report has brought to lightthe
plight of the industry only 25% of technical graduates and 10-15% of general
graduates have been found suitable for employment in offshore IT and BPO
sectors. The shortfallin employable workforce by 2010 is expected to be half-amillion against requirement of 2.3 million and this is a cause for concern. With
other countries fast catching up, India cannot retain its global dominance. IT
continues to be a major driver of economic growth in the coming years unless
this issue of manpower is addressed in the near term.
Even as the curriculum is being tailored to equip students with hard skills of a
reasonably high calibre, there is a dearth of quality teachers in many private
engineering colleges. While students graduating from top institutions with a good
faculty are adequately equipped to take up employment straight away, it is
not the case with students passing out of many private engineering colleges.
More than hard skills, it is the soft-skills that they are found lacking in
communication skills, ability to articulate ideas, and ability to work as a team
and build relationships. The lack of soft skills comes to the fore when working
on outsourcing projects. The in-house training provided by many companies is
tailor-made to meet hard-skills requirements; identifying and teaching soft skills
take a longer time. Academic institutions have an important role to play here.
Simple measures such as making students work as a team on projects and
imparting acceptable communications and other soft skills will go a long way.
With workplaces getting globalised fast, acquiring such soft skills will help
students to become employable across industries anywhere. Ideally such
initiatives should start in schools. Academia industry collaboration can help
students acquire hard as well as soft skills. The time has come for the rash of
companies that surfaced in the 1980s and 1990s to see this as an opportunity to
reinvent them and focus on imparting the skills needed to make the graduates
employable.

Passage II
I was asked to examine the minister. His complaint was pain in the neck. In
technical parlance we refer to it as cervical spondylosis. I tried to explain to the
honourable minister that the condition is brought on by a mis-alignment of the
neck-vertebrae, which is brought on by unusual strain on neck.
Common illustrations of unusual strain are over bending, which could be a
political necessity, keeping it too stiff, called political posturing, or trying to
balance a swollen head over an un-pivoted spine. He wriggled out of all options.
He was not from the ruling party at the Centre so he couldnt be framed for too
much head nodding, or for keeping his neck too stiff.
That he was in the Opposition took away the wind from woollen-head hypothesis.
On my way out, I was accosted by the officer on special duty. He came up with
his ingenious explanation for the etiology of the condition. According to him it
was the frequent garlanding that was the cause. At each public meeting the
minister had to put his neck forward to hold the 5 kilo rope of flowers, and on an
average there were a score of these at each meeting.
Then to talk for half an hour, holding the garlands for the sake of visual media,
and to multiply it by five meetings a day during election time, and then spread it
over 20 years.
On my drive back home, I pondered over the benefits of straight posturing
aspractised in Tamil Nadu. Though it is healthy, the only problem is that those
with round bellies are in danger of rolling over on their backs, and in case the
safety knot of the lungi was not secure, it would prove to be embarrassing for
both the leader and the subjects.
I thought about the CPM Politburo. They believe that everyone is equal and sit
equally on wooden chairs inside the writers building. Their Octogenarians may
have dementia, but no spinal problems have been reported so far. The
background of blue lime washed walls and green curtains resembling disposed
surgical linen perhaps helps to stiffen backs.
In UP, they straight away bend and go for the feet. Foot and mouth disease has
been reported. The actual incidence of backaches in these political circles is as
yet unofficial.
Choose the alternative that expresses meaning similar to the given word.
