Answer any 2 questions from the following including question no. 4

1) I) Briefly explain photovoltaic device? Define solar constant

05
II) Suppose that a particular family house in a sunny geographic location over a year consumes a
daily average electrical power of 500 W. If the annual solar incident per day is about
10 K W h m-2, and a photovoltaic device that convert solar energy to electrical energy has an
efficiency of 15%, what is the required device area?
10

2) I) Consider a solar cell driving a 30 resistive load as figure given below, suppose that the cell
has an area of 1 cm 1 cm and is illuminated with light of intensity 600 W m-2 and has the I-V
characteristic in figure given below. What are the current and voltage in the circuit? What is the
power delivered to the load? What is the efficiency of the solar cell in this circuit?
15

3) I) A solar cell under an illumination of 600 W m -2 has a short circuit current Isc of 16.1 mA and
an open circuit voltage of 0.485 V. What are the short circuit current and open circuit voltage
when the light intensity is doubled?
15

4) I) Define relative permittivity, refractive index, group velocity. With example briefly explain
TE field and TM field.
