ABSTRACT

4
The objective of our work was to assess the various methods of teaching
economics in the Senior High Schools: A case study of some selected schools in
the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. A total of eight schools out of eleven were
selected for the study. In all a total of thirty-three teachers were sampled.
Specifically, the study sought to find out the most frequently used methods
of teaching, factors that determine the choice those methods and the most
effective methods of teaching economics in the Senior High Schools. The
research instrument used was the questionnaire type.
The researchers at the end of their study made the following findings:
First, it was revealed that most teachers preferred the discussion method, followed
by the lecture method, problem solving method and role play method
respectively. Second, it was also realized that teachers’ choice of a method was
largely determined by the nature of a topic, followed by time factor and class size,
then the availability of teaching learning material in order of importance. Finally,
it came to light that the most effective method of teaching economics was the
discussion method.
Based on out findings, the researchers recommended that ministry of
Education through the Ghana Education Service should frequently organize in-
service training course on methods of teaching for economic teachers. Also, the
researchers recommended that in order to promote the used of other methods part
from the traditional lecture and discussion methods, the number of contact hours
for economics lesson should be increased, class size reduced and more teaching
learning material made available. Finally, the researcher advocated for the
frequent use of the discussion method since it enhances students participation and
performance more than the other methods.
