Course Description:
7th Grade ELA reinforces and expands upon concepts and skills introduced in the 6th Grade. The
curriculum covers four thematic units over the course of the year: narrative, informational texts,
argumentative texts, and literary analysis. Within each unit, students will develop the reading and
writing skills necessary to demonstrate mastery over the concepts needed to be successful
readers and writers across multiple disciplines and content areas.
Materials:
Each student will need to provide the following for his or her classroom binder:
- 1 3 ring binder
- Dividers
- Loose leaf paper
- Spiral bound single subject notebook
- Composition notebook
- Pocket folder
- Highlighters
- #2 Pencils
The binder will stay in the classroom and contain all classwork. The composition notebook will
be used for reading response prompts, which is the homework for this course. A pocket folder
will be used for returned work.
Classroom Rules:
1) Be on time
2) Be prepared
3) Follow directions
Behavior updates will be sent out on a daily basis for all students who committed infractions.
These are for informational purposes; the team does host parent conferences. To schedule a visit,
use the conference sign-up feature on the team website.

Homework :
The most important practice outside of the classroom for students in ELA is to read daily. Thirty
minutes of reading is expected each night; a reading journal will be kept with various prompts
for students to respond through writing. The journal will be the responsibility of the student to
bring back-and-forth between school and home. Each Thursday, the journal will be due for
grading. As a policy, additional homework will not be assigned unless the class or individual
students do not complete their work. Classwork assigned as homework will still be graded as
classwork.
Late Work & Absences:
Late work will be accepted with a penalty of 10 points each day up to 3 days after the assignment
was due; then it will be entered into the gradebook as a 0.
If a student is absent, he or she has the number of days equal to the time away from school to
turn in missing work and still receive full credit. After this time, it is counted as late work and
will be deducted 10 points each day.
