Second Grade
Home Reading Program .
September 2016
Dear Second Grade Families,
The Home Reading Program is a special program in our second grade
classrooms that we are very excited about. Reading is critical to your child's
success in school, Reading at home will help your child improve his/her reading
skills.
Here's how the Home Reading Program works:
Every Monday through Thursday, your child will bring home books in a baggie
at his/her “just right” level which he/she will select in class. Your child may select
‘one book, or more than one book to read for twenty minutes, Please listen to your
child read, giving him/her encouragement and praise. One book may be read more
than once. Rereading builds reading skills, comprehension, and fluency in Levels A
toG.
Before reading, look at the cover, title, illustrations, and blurb in the back.
Discuss what the book will probably be about.
Each Monday through Thursday, please help your child complete the reading
log. Children will be asked to write a response about their reading. Reading
assignments/responses will vary. Please check folders.
Place the books in the baggie each night and return to school the next day.
Please take very good care of these books, as books are treasures. The books
belong to the school, and to us, personally. If a book is damaged or lost, your child is
responsible for the book in the same way he or she is responsible for his or her school
library book.
Please discuss this Home Reading Program with your child. Please complete and
return the tear-of f below.

Second Grade
Homework Policy
September 201b
Dear Second Grade Families,
Welcome to the second grade! We would like to inform you of our homework
policy.
Second graders will receive homework Monday through Thursday, and,
occasionally, special assignments will be given on weekends. Homework should take
less than one hour to complete. We expect homework to be neat and to reflect
your child's best effort.
Homework assignments will include:
Reading: Twenty minutes of reading “just right" books is mandatory.
Reading Log and/or reading assignments are to be completed
Monday through Thursday.
We suggest that children continue to read “just right" books
during the weekend.
Math: Math workbook pages or worksheets,
Word Study: Assignments will vary depending on word study lesson taught in
class and individual student needs.
Writing: Assignments will not be given on a daily basis, and may vary based on
the current unit of study in writing workshop. We suggest that you provide tools for
“at home" writing (pencils, pens, paper) and encourage your child to write daily. Also,
initiate a daily discussion with your child about what he/she did as a writer in school
that day, and encourage him/her to begin to make plans for what he/she is going to do
the following day in writing workshop.
Thank you for your cooperation in encouraging your child and teaching him/her to
be responsible for all assignments. You are helping your child develop important work
habits that he/she will use throughout his/her education and job career.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Teachers
