INTRODUCTION
Mr. K. Jamal Mohideen, Anna Nagar, Chennai 600 040 has awarded the work of conducting
detailed Geotechnical Investigations for proposed construction of Residential Building of (Stilt+3)
floors at Old No. 30, New No. 22, Y Block 5th Street, 5th Avenue, Anna Nagar, Chennai, TN to
M/s Indu Geo Solutions, Chennai. The Geotechnical investigations were completed on 18th & 19th
May 2013. This report contains the results of the Geotechnical Investigation completed to date
along with foundation recommendations. The proposed structure is of (Stilt+3) Residential
Apartment.

2.0

EXPLORATION PROGRAM
The scope of work completed at this site is summarized below:
Making of Two (02) number of Standard Soil Investigation Borehole upto 20m depth below or
upto Refusal strata, whichever is earlier on the existing Ground Level.
Conducting SPTs at regular depth intervals,
Collecting disturbed and undisturbed soil samples,
Conducting relevant field and laboratory tests,
Submitting report with field and laboratory test results and recommendations for suitable
foundation options.

3.0

DETAILS OF STRUCTURES
The proposed structure is residential building (Stilt+3) floors. The exact details of columns are not
available at the time of preparation of this report. Assuming approximate column spacing of 4 to
5m c/c considering this, central column load works about 120 to 150 tonnes for proposed building.
These loads are assumed for the purpose of foundation only and for the structural design, exact
loads are to be estimated based on a suitable structural analysis.

4.0

FIELD BORING AND SAMPLING

One no of Calyx drilling machine rig was mobilized and drilling operation work was done. 150 mm
diameter boreholes were made at locations specified by Engineer-in-charge. These boreholes were
sunk to 20.00m depth. SPT tests were conducting at 1.0m and 1.5m regular intervals and at all type
of soil stratum and disturbed samples were collected.

4.1

STANDARD PENETRATION TEST

SPT split spoon sampler of standard dimensions was driven into the soil from the borehole bottom
using 63.5 kg hammer with a fall of 75 cm height. The SPT weight was lifted to the specified height
and allowed to fall freely on the anvil with the use of cat-head winch with one to one and half turn
of the drum. Blow counts for the penetration of every 15 cm were recorded and the N value is
reported as the blow counts for 30 cm penetration of the sampler excluding the first 15 cm
penetration as seating drive.

When the number of blows exceeded 50 to penetrate the first or second 15 cm length of the
sampler, the SPT N is regarded as more than 100 as described in IS 2131 - 1981. The test is
terminated in such case and a record of the penetration of the sampler under 50 blows is made. SPT
refusal is recorded when there is no penetration of the sampler at any stage and also when a
rebound of the sounding system is recorded. These tests were conducted at close intervals of 1.0m
so that a continuous SPT N profile is available.

Disturbed soil collected in the SPT sampler was preserved in polythene covers and transported to
the laboratory. Additional polythene cover was used to prevent the loss of moisture during the
transit period.

5.0

SUBSOIL PROFILE
LAYER I: Silty Clay

The top soil is silty clay of stiff in nature and is present up to the 9.0m from the existing ground
level. The SPT N value is 6 to 17. A sandy layer is sand witched by silty clay in borehole one (BH-1).
LAYER II: Silty Sand

The second layer of Silty sandy Clay is encountered from 9.0m to 15.0m with SPT N value is 24 to
31. This layer is dense in nature.
LAYER III: Silty Sand

The third layer of Silty sand is encountered and the borehole is termination in this layer. The
denseness of soil stratum is increasing towards the borehole termination. The ground water is not
encountered at the time of investigation (May 2013).

SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS
The Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) recommendations are calculated for shallow footings for general
sub soil profile.
A properly designed foundation has to satisfy the following two limit states.
1) Limit state of collapse (i.e. Shear strength)
2) Limit state of serviceability (i.e. Settlement)
SHEAR CRITERIA:

The first criterion is depends on shear strength. The calculations are based on TERZAGHI bearing
capacity equation as recommended by IS: 6403 (with factor of Safety) which takes care of L/B ratio
(shape), foundation depth etc., along with other parameters.
The intensity of loading at the base of the foundation, which would cause shear failure of the soil
support, is termed as Ultimate Bearing Capacity (UBC).

The following equation is used to calculate Ultimate Bearing Capacity (UBC),

UBC = C*NC*Sc*dc + q * (Nq-1) * Sq * dq + 0.5 * B * * N * S * d * W'

Safe bearing capacity (SBC) is the maximum intensity of loading that the foundation will safely carry
without the risk of shear failure of soil irrespective of any settlement that may occur. Safe Bearing
Capacity can be obtained by dividing the UBC with suitable factor of safety.
SBC = UBC/2.5

SETTLEMENT CRITERIA:
The intensity of loading that will cause a permissible settlement or specified settlement of the
structure is termed as allowable bearing pressure. The settlement in this type of layer will be elastic
settlement.

These foundation settlements are evaluated using elastic theory. The pressure distribution below
the footing is assumed as 2 V: 1 H for estimating the settlement. Since rock formation is available at
shallow depth. The settlement will be within the permissible limit. Hence open foundation is
suitable.

ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY:

Allowable Bearing capacity (ABC) is the net intensity of the loading which the foundation will carry

without undergoing settlement in excess of the permissible value for the structure under
consideration but not exceeding the net safe bearing capacity (SBC).

7.0

DISCUSSION ON FOUNDATION
From sub soil profile and laboratory test data, it can be seen that brownish silty clay up to 9.0m
below ground level and followed by silty sandy clay up to 15.0m. Due to silty soft to stiff Clay, the
safe bearing capacity of this layer is less and settlements are more than permissible limit. Hence
shallow foundation is not feasible and pile foundation is recommended for the proposed building.
The pile shall be terminated in Silty Sand layer.

8.0

RECOMMENDATIONS
Pile foundations are envisaged for supporting structures carrying larger concentrated loads.
Based on the soil data, Bored cast-in-situ piles may be adopted.
Pile bearing capacity is arrived based on the static approach. Separate evaluation of shaft
friction and end bearing forms the basis of this approach. Safe bearing capacities of piles for
different diameters are calculated and respective capacities indicated below Table.

The above safe loads suggested are tentative and these have to be confirmed by conducting
through pile load tests conducted as per IS 2911 part IV.
