Illegal Connection Ipagbawal, Prepaid Electricity

Suportahan
The new electrical connection has brought big savings to Ronalds family in
Tondo, Manila. Under the prepaid electricity program of MERALCO, Ronald
now pays PhP200 only compared to that of almost PhP500 weekly which he
allots for electricity using a sub-meter.
He also noticed that the quality of electricity has greatly improved.
Dati ang ikot ng electric fan namin, yung number 3 parang number 1 lang.
Ngayon ang number 1 number 3 naang lakas na eh, said Ronald.
Moreover, for Aling Imelda, prepaid electricity provided her additional income
opportunity. Her neighbors come to her for their prepaid electricity load.
pag naubusan ako ng load, Imelda Angeles said in an interview.
Aling Imeldas and Ronalds barangays were included in the nearly 600
households electrified by MERALCO with both prepaid and postpaid
electricity after Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi of the Department of Energy (DOE)
met with them (MERALCO) on July 7, 2016.
The Duterte administrations directive is to prioritize the poor in terms of
legitimizing their electrical connection. According to MERALCO, Dutertes
directive is a big help in strengthening their electrification projects like
prepaid electricity because complying with the requirements for electricity
service has been made easier than ever before with the help of the local
government units (LGUs).
MERALCO expects to complete the installation target of 40,000 prepaid
meters this year.
Said directive also helped address the right of way issues that used to
impede the implementation of electrification projects of distribution utilities
such as MERALCO.
"Ang maganda doon ay yung suporta ng DOE; sinabi niya na whatever
problems sa right of way, sa mga LGUs, paratingin sa kanila. So with that
support, at mukhang alam na rin naman ng mga LGUs, we can achieve our

targets, Mr. Ferdinand Geluz (Meralco VP and Head of North Business Area)
commented.
Next year, MERALCO will further intensify its prepaid electricity program
using the recently approved 100,000 additional prepaid meters in Quezon
City, San Juan, Mandaluyong and Pasig.
