Relevant today, as when they were given over 3000 years ago.
The complete recipe for a good world. Free of tyranny and cruelty.

The Ten Commandments

1. I am the Lord, your God.
2. Thou shall bring no false idols before me.
3. Do not take the name of the Lord in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shall not kill/murder.
7. Thou shall not commit adultery.
8. Thou shall not steal.
9. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. Thou shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

1st Statement:
I AM THE LORD YOU GOD WHO TOOK YOU OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT,
OUT OF THE HOUSE OF BONDAGE. (Exodus 20: 2)
It is so important that none of the other commandments would make sense without
it.
Why?
1. It asserts the authority by whom the commandments are given. That God is
the law giver, not Moses, not any other human being. So that no one can
question, because the Ultimate Authority is the One that established it, above
any king or any principality.
a. We need to know and not only believe that something is wrong.
b. By just opinionated belief, we might not share the same view with
others.
2. God is the One who delivered us from slavery, not Moses, not any other
human being.

Therefore, we have an obligation to God, not to any human.

What is the obligation?
That we live by the following 9 commandments. This is ethical monotheism.
Ethical Monotheism
Important Points:
1. It means that the One God (monotheism) is the source of morality (ethics).
- Morality, the objective code of right and wrong, does not come from
human opinion, but it emanates from God and God alone.
- Unless there is God that declares morality, morality is just an opinion
and belief.
- (compare with golden rule.)
- People cannot figure out right from wrong without a higher authority,
because, peoples view on morality is only a mere opinion. Example:
communism, natzism and other ideologies had many people killed,
because of mere belief.
2. What God wants from us is that we treat other human beings morally.
- This is as shown by all the 10 commandments.
- Comparison:
o False gods- people who worship false gods believe that they
must do a lot for their false gods. Example: Sacrificing people,
penitence, feed them (anitos), Mayans, Aztecs.
o True God- by the 10 commandments, true believers know that
what God wants is that we be good to our fellow human beings.
o The thing that we can do for God is to treat all His other
children decently.
- Analogy:
o Parents have indescribable joy when their children act lovingly to
one another and indescribable pain when their children hurt
each other.
o So, to God who is our Father in heaven cares about how we treat
other human beings, all of whom are His children.
3. The statement talks about freedom and its Importance and meaning.
a. God took us out of slavery, out from bondage and in to freedom.
b. Meaning of freedom.
i. Freedom is following God. Everything outside of following
God is slavery. Slavery to sin.
ii. The 10 commandments are the way to freedom. (Cor. 3:17)
iii. We cannot be a free people if we do whatever we want,
because if one does whatever he wants, he will ultimately
step into other peoples rights. There is no freedom in that.
iv. Freedom comes from moral control. There is no other way to
achieve it.

2nd Statement/ 1st and 2nd Commandment

YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.

This prohibits:
1. Making idols (Exodus 20: 4)
2. Worshipping idols (Exodus 20: 3)
What is a false god.

(Exodus 20:

Education. Education is important to help people find work, to understand the

world. But education apart from the higher ends of God and goodness can lead to
great evil.
Examples:
1. Many of the best educated people in supported Hitler and Joseph Stalin
during their times.
THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT EDUCATION THAT GUARANTEES THAT A PERSON WILL BE
WISER, KINDER OR MORE ETHICAL.

3rd Statement/ 3rd Commandment

DO NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN. FOR THE LORD WILL NOT
HOLD GUILTLESS WHOEVER TAKES HIS NAME IN VAIN. (Exodus 20: 7)
MISUSE (NIV)
This commandment means committing evil in Gods name.
When an irreligious person does evil, it doesnt bring God in disrepute, but when
religious people commit evil, especially in Gods name, they are not only committing
evil, but they are doing terrible damage to the name of God.
Concrete example:
Islamic Extremists who tortures, bombs, kills in the name of God, do terrible
damage in the name of God. Lies made in the name of God are those that make
terrible damage to the society such as the ISIS, because they believe they are doing
good things, when in fact, its otherwise.

4th Statement/ Commandment

REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY.. (Exodus 20: 8)

Importance
-

For most of history, humans are beasts of burden, we work to eat, work
to live.
But, this commandment and only this commandment changed that, by
insisting that people cease working one day out of seven.

- The Sabbath commandment reminds people that we are meant to be

free, and not meant to be slaves to anything.

o People who work 7 days a week are essentially slaves. Slaves to
work or money.
o A millionaire who works 7 days a week is simple a rich slave!

The Sabbath creates and strengthens family ties and friendships.

o It is good for the marriage and the family itself, because
Sabbath is also meant for the family to gather before God.
o Time spent together is time spent for strengthening the
relationship.

Reality:
THE ONES WHO BELIEVE THAT THE COMMANDMENTS WERE GIVEN BY GOD
ARE THE ONES WHO KEPT THE SABBATH ALIVE.
Key Importance:
JUST AS FAITH IN GOD BRINGS PEOPLE TO OBSERVING THE SABBATH,
OBSERVING THE SABBATH BRINGS PEOPLE TO FAITH IN GOD
EVERYTIME YOU OBSERVE THE SABBATH, YOU ARE AFFIRMING THAT THERE IS
A CREATOR, THAT THE WORLD DIDNT JUST HAPPEN, THAT LIFE ISNT A
MEANINGLESS COINCIDENCE BUT THAT IT IS INFINITELY MEANINGFUL AND
THEREFORE EACH OF US HAS A UNIQUE SIGNIFICANCE AND PURPOSE.

5th Commandment/ Statement

HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER, THAT YOUR DAYS MAY
BE LONG IN THE LAND THAT THE LORD YOUR GOD IS GIVING
YOU (Exodus 20:12)
Why is this so important?
-

Children need it.

Parents who are not honored are essentially adult peers of their
children, not parents. Its like growing without parents, because your
parents have become of your level.
Honoring parents helps us as children to recognize that there is a
moral authority above us.
Children who obey parents are more likely to obey the law in their
adulthood.
Ones attitude toward ones father largely shapes ones attitude
towards God. Sigmund Freud.
If your children see you honor your parents, the chances are that they
will, in turn honor you.

6th Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT KILL Exodus 20:13

THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY Exodus 20:14

Importance:
-

Adultery destroys the basic building block of society, the family,

because it breaks it.
Without the family, social stability is impossible, because without
it, the passing of values from generation to generation is
impossible.
Commitment to a wife and children makes men more responsible
and mature.
Because the family meets most of womens emotional needs.
Family is necessary for the childrens stable and secure
childhood.

8th Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT STEAL.
Open Ended, doesnt specify the target.. not limited to material
property.
Encompasses all the others:
- Murder, stealing of life
- Adultery, stealing of ones spouse
- Coveting, desire to steal
- False Testimony, stealing justice

9th Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THY
NEIGHBOR.
Almost all of the societal evils are because of lies such as:
- Black slavery- based on lies that blacks are inferior
- Nazism- based on the lies that jews are inferior to arians
- Communism- (share video on the channels of npas)
Mass evil is committed not because people are inherently evil, but because
they are fed with lies that convince them. Example: Satan.

10th Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT COVET... ANYTHING THAT IS THY
NEIGHBORS.
- Prohibits the thing that leads to the violation of commandments 5-9
- Prohibits thought, because it leads to evil.

- To covet is much more that to want, it means: to want to the point of

seeking to take away and own something that belongs to another person.
