Primary Sources Versus

Secondary Sources
EQ: How should I evaluate the
reliability of historical
sources?

Part 1: What is CRAAP?

Primary and Secondary Sources

A Primary Source is a document or physical

object which was written or created during

the time it came from. These sources were
present during an experience or time period and
offer an inside view of a particular event.
Types of primary sources include: ORIGINAL
DOCUMENTS like diaries, speeches, manuscripts,
letters, interviews, news film footage,
autobiographies, official records. CREATIVE
WORKS like poetry, drama, music, and art. RELICS
OR ARTIFACTS like pottery, furniture, clothing, and
buildings.

Primary and Secondary Sources

A secondary source interprets and

analyzes primary sources. These sources
are one or more steps removed from the
event. They were not written or created
by someone who witnessed the event.
Types of secondary sources include:
PUBLICATIONS: textbooks, magazine
articles, histories, biographies, and
encyclopedias.
