1. PreproductionThisissometimesreferredtoasthesilentperiod.Englishlanguage
learnersknowupto500wordsbutcannotspeakanyEnglish.Manyareparrotingatthis
point.Duringthisstage,teachersshouldfocusonlisteningcomprehension.
2. EarlyProductionThisstagelastsapproximately6months.Learnershaveanactiveand
receptivevocabularyofapproximately1,000words.Theyhavelikelymemorized
sentencesorphrases(languagechucks),andmayusethemincorrectlysometimes.
Teachersshouldacceptonetotwowordphrasesasanswersatthisstage.
3. SpeechEmergenceAstudentsvocabularyisuptoabout3,000words.Theycanuse
sentencesthatmayormaynotbegrammaticallycorrect.Theycanparticipateinshort
conversationswithclassmates.Teacherscanparticipateindialoguejournalswiththe
