Dear Sir or Madam,

With this letter, i would like to express my interest in becoming a global citizen
to make a change with my vision to the world.
I am a scholar and I have a vision that I will make Urban Planning relevant in
Indonesians prespective in 20 years time. This vision is enlightened when I
attended Prepcom 3, a program by UN-Habitat for finalize a draft that will be
signed in Habitat III in Quito. At first, I didnt know what AIESEC is and what
works do AIESEC does, but when i find AIESEC at Urban Youth Meeting, i find an
opportunity to present my vision. AIESEC is a global youth organization and I
think that youth voices are relevant to solve problems occuring now. As the draft
said, the world are focused on changing development priorities to New Urban
Agenda, and one of the action areas is in Urban Planning and Design. And one of
the key points of urban planning is urban residents must be at the centre of
planning. So by changing our mindset that the centre of planning is people, we
can make numerous changes on how a city would be like in the future.
Most of my time in RCUS was studying how culture can make a great impact on
urban housing. One of the culture is co-operation or in Indonesia is gotong
royong. Some of this action is still relevant in the urban area, but when city
grows, less people share this kind of behavior. One of the settlement that still
adopting this method is none other than villages. Villages in Jakarta are diverse
and unique in many ways, and have a same characteristic that is homogenous.
By seing village as an community, everyone in the village are tied together. If
one of them have problems, neighbours will also felt the urgency to solve the
problem. This culture is lacked by real estate settlements and other tipe of
settlement like apartment, villas, etc. As an real estate home owner, I felt that I
never have connection or even emphaty to my neighbours. This is a major
problems happening in urban communities. Now, villages are being eradicated
easily because people didnt understand urban legislation and map. Some of
them are removed without knowing the purpose of the removal. This is a setback
for achieving the New Urban Agenda. So as a citizen and a scholar, I have
change people prespective about villages.
As joining prepcom 3 i understand that participating as a stakeholder in ECOSOC
can make a great impact. Inducted by prepcom 3, Surabaya change its layout of
the city to a more well designed city. There are more parks, safe roads for people
to cross by, and more public spaces. So by becoming a global citizen i can learn
situation in other places and compare them to problems in my country. And by
participating the project, i can improve myself on management skills and
creative ideas to make cities more inclusive. Also I can learn how to stimulate the
awareness and participation of community. Cause without doing, learning be can
pointless, so by becoming a global citizen I can understand the field of my target
and develop new ways to achieve it.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your positive respons.
Your faithfully,

Samuel Gerald Marpaung
