History and Examination


Non-painful eye
Blephritis
Ectropian exposure of cornea, dry eye, infection, ulceration
- Eyes can turn in as well
Fluorescein
Basal cell carcinoma, molluscum contagiosum
Conjunctiva
- Pterygium
- Subconjunctival haemorrhage (ask about trauma, bleeding behind
eye, blood pressure, INR
Painful eye
- Foreign body (topical anesthetic, burr or needele, fluorescein, check
fluids)
- Herpes simplex virus -> herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic ulcer,
treated with acyclovir)
- Marginal keratitis
- Corneal abrasion
- Contact lens and red eye (RED FLAG)
- Corneal bacterial ulcerPseudomonas causes pus in the cornea
- Shingles, ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve
- Chalazion/stye
- Acute angle glaucoma (unilateral pain, hazy vision, headache,
nausea)
- Conjunctivitis (viral [history, self-limiting, contagious], bacteria,
allergic [chemosis])
- Purulent red eye
- Chemical injury acidic (initial damage and stop) or alkaine
(liquefactive necrosis) chemicals
- Scleritis
- Episcleritis
- Iritis
- Hypopyon, pus in the anterior chamber
- Hyphaema (trauma, squash)
- Orbital cellulitis
