Public Opinion Strategies recently completed a survey of 400 likely voters in California’s 49th
Congressional District, including 120 cell phone interviews. The survey was conducted September 6-8,
2016 and has a margin of error of ±4.90%. The memorandum below reviews the key findings of the poll.
The survey was conducted on behalf of Darrell Issa for Congress.
1. Darrell Issa is in a strong position for re-election;

Darrell Issa is up 14% against Doug Applegate, 52% - 38%.
Darrell Issa’s job approval is 52% approve – 30% disapprove.

2. In contrast, Doug Applegate is unknown and has a weak image in the final stretch of the
campaign;

Only 33% of voters have heard of Doug Applegate, and his image is 12% favorable – 2%
unfavorable.

3. Voters like what Issa has done for their district;

Seventy-two percent of voters are more likely to vote for Darrell Issa because his record
of working for military families and veterans.
Sixty-five percent of voters are more likely to vote for Darrell Issa because of his
bipartisan work on Johanna’s Law.
