The University of Waterloo Formula Motorsports is a student team founded

in 1987 as the universitys entry into the prestigious Formula SAE design
series. As one of Waterloos largest student teams, we face a tough
challenge:

We conceptualize it, design it, manufacture it, test it, tune it, and race it.
Trouble shooting excluded!
For a team of approximately 60 Undergraduate Engineering students, this
project involves learning and applying knowledge several terms before their
classes cover them, using tools and software they would never touch
otherwise. Of course, the skills they take away drastically improve their
employability, but they also learn to think with a team mindset, challenging
themselves and each other to produce the best final product possible.
Comprised primarily of students in co-op programs, the competition is more
challenging for Waterloo than its competitors, since half the team is always
working at a co-op position. And yet, UWFM is one of the strongest
Canadian teams in the competition, and as of Formula North 2015,

Studying at one of the strongest academic institutions in the world, we are

privileged to have the faculty we do. But without practical experience, our
understandings of the real world applications would be very limited. To us,
the team is the best way of learning first-hand about cutting edge
technology and the engineering discipline in the real world, while making
connections that will last a lifetime.

Every May, UWFM competes at its longest attended competition, Formula SAE Michigan, one of the largest and most competitive event in the Formula SAE Series. The
events span over 6 days and encompass every aspect of the car and team. With 120
teams competing, the competition is widely considered the most competitive Undergraduate level competition in the world. It is divided into the following events:

Being a student design competition, the Design event at Formula SAE Michigan is arguably the most prestigious event. From top-level vehicle goals to the design of individual
parts and mounts, judges expect a methodical and validation-based engineering approach to vehicle design.

The premise of the competition revolves around pitching our vehicle to investors as a
competitive autocross vehicle. The Marketing and Cost events challenge teams to prove
the worth of their model as a cost-effective and marketable product for sale on a larger
scale.

On completion of a full inspection of the car for rules compliance, the car is ready to
race! Dynamic events include Acceleration, Skidpad, Autocross and Endurance. Each
event challenges a different aspect of the cars design, marking teams based on how
quickly the car is able to complete each track. Together, the events truly push the cars
performance to the limit, and UWFM is one of the few teams that completes all events
regularly.

On completion of all dynamic events, the competition staff measure the fuel levels of
each car to determine their fuel efficiency score.

UWFM functions very much like a professional racing team. We encounter real costs, from necessary tools to specialized components and even competition registration. Without support from our valuable sponsors we would not be able to reach our goals.
Why should you sponsor us?
Silver sponsors and above receive a logo on the 2016 car! But what kind of visibility are we talking about?

Formula SAE has grown exponentially in the last 3 decades, and Formula SAE students have
proven to be competitive engineers in industry. As a result, every major North American company hiring engineering graduates
sponsors teams at our competition. Sponsoring us will result in exposure of your firm to some of the strongest engineering
students from around the world.
Through our appearance at engineering events,
especially for the Dean of Engineering, First Year engineers, and high-school students coming into engineering, UWFM is held in
high esteem by a very large portion of engineering students.
You hire co-op students, you hire full-time graduates, you are involved with research at the University.
Waterloo grads have proven themselves to be very qualified. So what better way to support their education than by supporting a
team that nurtures their thirst for knowledge and dedication?
The experience from the team sets team members apart from other engineering students. Several
employers hiring Waterloo students mention a preference for our team in their job postings. Many of our team members have
completed co-op terms, and gone on to work full-time for our sponsors.
Whether its a company barbeque or a corporate showcase of community
investment, having our car at your event is sure to capture everyones interest. Ask us to bring the car around!
Our 30-year long story has only come about because of our sponsors. The interest and support of
people like you are the only reason our team continues to thrive. Help us keep going!

UWFM aims to be one of the top contenders at its competitions worldwide.

However, more than anything,

Through our involvement with Engineering Outreach groups over the past few
years, we actively participate in attracting young students to the engineering
discipline.
Since several projects on the team can be highly technically challenging, our team
is a prime candidate for many fourth year engineering design projects every year.
UW Engineering Professors have consistently commended projects coming from
our team for their methodical and in-depth approach to problem solving.
As one of the oldest teams at UW, we have become an important part of the
engineering culture at the university. This results in the team being the first to be
invited to important events, such as showcases of engineering excellence in our
Engineering programs.
A project of this size requires several thousand man-hours of work per season.
Through the course of this project, each of us spends a LOT of time with each
other. Through the team, we have found not only a hands-on outlet for our
engineering curriculum, but also life-long friendships and industry contacts.
