Objective: By the end of this lesson you should be able to name some magnetic
and non-magnetic materials, and to be able to draw force fields around a
magnet.
Write down unit info in notebooks. Have 1st person done write one for wall.
Create posters. Work in groups of 3 or 4, have students map out what they already
know about magnets. These posters will be added to throughout the unit. (show
example on whiteboard/PP slide)
Ideas for what they can include: What they can do and where they are used eg. Fridges
Have title: magnets with the 4 categories
Electromagnets
magnetic fields
making magnets
magnets
Remind them that they will be adding to their posters throughout the unit
Do a gallery walk: put posters around the room and have students look at each others
posters.
Discuss what they know. Like poles repel, opposites attract. Can write key points on
board.

Demonstrate how to use GIZMO, test out the magnets first. Then go on to use iron
fillings. Answer questions after for formative assessment discussion, gizmo checks the
answers.
Short practical to test which metals are magnetic. That magnets attract magnetic
materials iron, steel, nickel and cobalt, but not other metals and magnetic iron
oxide. Non-magnetic materials: not affected by magnets, non-metals and some metals
(copper, aluminium)
Slide 7, What does the magnetic field around a bar magnet look like? Shape and
direction. Have students discuss with elbow buddies and call out what each partnership
things, have them draw it out and hold it up. Where is it strongest? weakest?

Put the north poles of two bar magnets together. What happens?
Now put the two magnets under a piece of paper with the N poles together.
that the magnetic field around magnets can be shown using iron filings
nonmagnetic
metals
and
ceramic
magnets,
which
contain
iron oxide.

Why is the earth like a magnet? Core made of iron and ore. Lined up domains make it
magnetic (domain theory of magnetism), moving electrons. Compasses.
5:49: question, why does piece float above other? Pause and discuss. What happens if
you turn the one piece over? They stick together.
10:45
Have students add to their posters at the end of class for formative assessment.
Students will be assessed formatively throughout the class, with questions, thumbs up and
down for understanding.

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
The GIZMO did not work because internet was too slow, even working in groups. I can put it on managebac so
they can experiment from home if they like. Their homework is also on managebac. I need to have the homework
up on the board at the start so the class has something to work if they finish something early. I had time for unit
plan, posters, tried GIZMO, PP up to the experiment. The class enjoyed working with magnets and magnetic fields.
The projector did not work properly, so since the class was small I used my laptop and wrote what they needed in
their notes on the white board. The class is energetic, I need to work on a more effective way to get everybodys
attention more effectively. I taught them thumbs up for if they understand, used repeat back for understanding.
