PRESS RELEASE
The Argostoli Council is honouring - after 37 years - the Nations that send
their warships to help the homeless and desparate people of Kefalonia after the
devastating Earthquake of the 12th of August 1953, The British destroyer H.M.5,
DARING, under the command of captain P. Gick left Halta that very: day after the
orders of the late admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten and sailing at full speed
arrived first at Argostoli- early the next morning. The relief operation started
at once: A hospital in tents was set up and rescue squads went out into town and
worked furiously to drag anyone found alive out of the ruins, Few hours later an
Veraeli squadron with 4 chips under the command of captain Slono Errell satied
ins 48 hours later, Task Force 52 under the conmand of the late admiral Sir
Charles Norris sailed in from Malta and stayed for 2 weeks. Soon afterwards
ships of the 6th American fleet arrived, under the command of adniral Cassady,
followad by French and Italian ships a little later
‘The surviving ‘wembers of H.M.S. DARING are invited, after thelr own desire to
visit Argostoli, to spend a week in the island as honorary guests of the
Argostoli townhall council. Moreover the council, has invited the ambessadors,
naval, attaches and other representatives and survivors from Great Britain, the
United States, Israel, France and Italy to. participate in the celebration ‘that
will take place in the Korghialenios Library In Argostoli, at 18.30 of the 16th
September 1990. Speeches wil! be delivered, medals and honotary diplomas awarded
and there vill be a slide show of rare pictures of the pre - earthquake
