Settingupyourdocument
InDesignmakesitfairlyeasytoprintbooksforbinding.Thesearethesteps:
Createanewdocumentwithmultiplepages.Thenumberofpagesmustbeamultipleoffour.Forabook
withthreespreads,thedocumentwillhaveeightpages(thefrontcover,twopagesforeachspread,and
thebackcover).IntheNewDocumentdialoguebox,setthenumberofpagesto8,12,or16(probably).
8pagesmake3spreads,12pagesmake5spreads,and16pagesmake7spreads.
Unlinkthemarginsifyouwanttochangetheir
valuesindependently.
Youalsoneedtosetthepagesize.Remember,
thereare6picasinaninchand12pointsina
pica(so72pointsperinch).Thepagesizeisforeachindividualpage,notforawholespread.Ifyou're
printingon8.5"x11"paperinlandscape,itis66p0x51p0(66picas,0pointsby51picas,0points).So,if
youaregoingtoprintonlettersizedpaperyourmaximumpagewidthis33p0andyourmaximumpage
heightis51p0.Ifyouaregoingtoprintontabloidsizedpaper,yourmaximumwidthis51p0andyour
maximumheightis66p0.
Youcanalsosetanumberofcolumnsasguideswhenlayingoutthebook.Thinkaboutthesizeofyour
book,howwideyouwantyourcolumnstobe,ifyouwantacolumnformarginalia(captions,etc.).Ifyou
wantacolumnformarginalia,itmightmakesensetohaveanoddnumberofcolumnsandthensetyour
bodytexttothewidthoftwoofthosecolumnsandthemarginaliatexttoonecolumn.
Yourdocumentisnowreadytolayouttheimages,text,etc.
UsingInDesign'sPrintBookletdialoguebox
Whenyouarereadytoprint,selectFile>PrintBooklet(notFile>Print)
PrintBookletordersthepagesdifferentlythanyouseethemwhenyou'relayingthemoutinorderto
accountforhowbindingthepagestogetherchangestheirrelationship.Seethediagrambelow:
Asyoucansee,whenit'sactuallyprinted,pages1
and8areonthesamepage,3and6aretogether,
2and7aretogether,and4and5aretogether.
Whenyou'redesigningthespreads,designthem
howyouwantthebooktolookinthefinishedbook
andletPrintBookletrearrangethepagessothey
printinthecorrectorderforbinding.
HereisthePrintBookletdialoguebox.Youneedtomakesurethattheprintsettingsarecorrect.Click
PrintSettings.
First,selectthecorrectprinter.Toprintincolorinthelab,choosetheX7760(Theprintersnamewillbe
precededbytheroomnumberofthelab,CAC703intheimageabove).Thenclick"Setup"ontheleft
side.SetPagePositionto"Centered."Itisagoodideatosetthepapersize,whetheryou'reusingletter
sizepaperorsomeothersize.Ifyourpagesaremorethan30picaswide,youshoulduseTabloid
(11"x17")paper.Iftheyare30porless,youcanprintonLetter.Ifyourpagesaren'tlininguponletter
paper,tryitontabloidI'vehadsomeluckwiththatiftheydon'tlineuponletter.Setthepage
orientationtolandscape(thesecondonefromtheleft).
Now,selectMarksandBleedontheleftside.
InMarksandBleedchecktheboxforCrop
Marks.Thismakessmallmarksonyour
pagessoyoucanseewheretocropwhen
yourecuttingthepapertopreparethebooks
forbinding.
ThenclickPrinteratthebottom(yellowinthe
imageabove).Ifitgivesyouthesmalldialogueboxbelow,clickonthearrowtoexpandittothefull
dialoguebox.
Checkthe"TwoSided"boxtotherightofCopies.
ChooseLayoutfromthedropdownlistinthemiddleofthedialoguebox.Nextto"TwoSided"nearthe
bottom,choose"Shortedgebinding."Thismakesitprintforabookwhosebindingrunsvertically(like
almosteverybody's).Ifyourprintsareupsidedownononesideofthepages,changetheTwoSided
settingtotheotherone.
ThenclickPrintandOKtogetbacktothePrintBookletdialoguebox.
YoucanusePreview(ontheleftsideofthePrintBookletdialogbox)togetapreviewofwhatitwill
actuallyprint.
Thearrowsatthebottomallowyoutoscrolltoseetheotherpagesthatwillbeprinted.Thiswillshow
youhowitwillactuallyprint,withthepagesbeingshiftedaroundtoaccountforhowthebookletsare
bound.
Herearethecorrectpageordersforbooksofthefollowingpagenumbers:
4pagebook:4/1,2/3
8pagebook:8/1,2/7,6/3,4/5
12pagebook:1/12,2/11,10/3,4/9,8/5,6/7

PrintinginB/Win1718(ignorethisifyoureprintinginthelab)
Prepareasstatedabove.
ThePrinter(inthePrintSettingsdialogbox)buttonallowsyoutosetthepaperfeed.Clickit.
Hereyouseetheselectedprinteragain.Ifthewindowyouseeissmallerthanthis,clickonthearrowto
therightoftheprinterselectionlisttoexpandthedialoguebox.
Select"PaperFeed"fromthedropdownlistinthemiddleofthebox.Thenselectthetrayyouwant.In
1718,tray1isthemanualfeed,trays2and3arelettersize.Forthefirstsetofpages,printfrom2or3
soitwillpullthenicepaperfromthetrays.Then,laterwe'llsetittotray1(manual)toprintontheback
sideofthosepages.
Click"Print"anditwillprintthepages.Foran8pagebook,itwillprint1and8,then2and7,then6and
3,then4and5.An8pagebookonlyactuallyuses2sheetsofpaper,sothiswillbetwobookswhen
we'redone.
Thesepagesgobackintotheprinterviathemanualfeedtray.
Youhavetobesuretofeedthepaperintothemanualtrayoftheprinterintherightorderandfacingthe
rightdirection.Placethepagesyoujustprintedintothemanualfeedtrayintherightorderforprinting
thenextpages,notintheordertheycameoutoftheprinter.Belowareimagesshowinghowto
arrangethepagesfor8,12,and16pagebooks.Placethemintothetray,withthealreadyprinted
sidedown,withthebottomofthepapergoingintotheprinterfirst.Thenumbersbelowarethe
pagenumbersofthealreadyprintedpages.

Gobacktoyourcomputer,selectFile>PrintBooklet.Thistime,gointoPrintSettings,theninto
Printer,andselectTray1(Manual)asthepaperfeed.
ClickPrintinallofthedialogueboxes.Nowitwilltakethepagesfromthemanualfeedtray.
Younowhavetwocompletebooks.Sortoutthepagesintothetwodifferentbooks.Thencutthepagesif
necessaryandbindthem.
