Sending the Right Message
Brian Anderson
December 1995
Anderson is providing a crystal clear message as to why it is important to have music educators in
the world today. Communication within this field of work is imperative. Short terms goals for influencing
students, parents, administrators, guidance counselors, and people in the community are provided here.
These are useful tools to really expand the overall mentality of music departments. It is important that
both students and parents understand how music influences critical thinking skills, creativity, and selfdiscipline. This will then reflect onto the other courses they are enrolled in. In addition, I will
communicate with faculty members and administration on the positive effects that music can have on
students. Participation in music will allow for different ways of thinking. I want to keep the community
informed on up-coming performances by making use of social media and other means of communication.
As a long term goal, I would like to focus more on assessment in comparison to competition. This can be
done by offering competitive music opportunities outside of the school day. Academic music classes
should be offered during the school day to balance the curriculum. Assessment should be based on much
more than performance. I want my students to understand what we are learning which is why I will also
base this off of music literacy. This will allow for all students to grow as a musician in all ways possible.
