Predicting the Stress-Strain Behavior of Mine Tailings using Modified Hyperbolic

Model
Mary Ann Q. Adajar, Mark Albert H. Zarco (May, 2016)
The shear strength parameters of mine tailings were determined through Direct
Shear test. Adajar and Zarco investigated the applicability of mine tailings as
embankment material. The parameters obtained were model using Modified
Hyperbolic Model adopted from Duncan and Chang. Physical properties and shear
strength parameters were determined to understand the stress-strain behaviour of
mine tailings for evaluation of its suitability. According to Adajar and Zarco, the
hyperbolic model is one of the most frequently used models to describe the nonlinear movement of soil. The behaviour of soil predicted by the model would be
used in finite element method for future geotechnical applications. As a result, the
modified hyperbolic model developed by the authors provided a good
approximation of response of soil that exhibit ductile failure, it did not apply well to
dilatant samples.
