Game Integration Plan

Title of game: Flight to Freedom http://www.mission-us.org/pages/mission-2
Description: In the fully interactive online game students take on the role of a
female slave named Lucy King. The goal is to escape to freedom. Through-out the
game students are to make decisions based off of the tasks she has to complete.
Each decision has a consequence whether it may be good or bad. This game gives
students a first-hand experience of what it may have been like to be a slave in the
1800s. Students are able to sympathize with the horrific times of the past while
gaining a deeper understanding of why abolitionist wanted to ban slavery before the
Civil War.
Justification: I chose this game for a 5th grade classroom so that students can
gain a closer understanding of the reasoning behind why slaves chose to either
obey or disobey their slave masters and to gain better understanding of the evils of
slavery which led to the Civil War.

For 2 days during Social Studies period students will use a class set of computers or
lab to complete the missions.
Procedures: This game will be integrated during the lesson on how slavery
increased tensions between the North and the South which helped lead to the Civil
War. First students will be introduced to the purpose of the game, what they are
supposed to do, and titles of each mission:
Part 1: PROLOGUE & PART 1:
Behind the Big House 1848
Part 2:Runaway! 1848
Part 3: Free and Not Free 1849
Part 4: Gathering Forces 1849
Part 5: New Times New Troubles 1850
Epilogue 1850-1860
Evaluation: At the end of the mission, students will write a 2 paragraph reflection
on what they have learned from playing the game. Students must include how the
game affected their views of slavery, how slavery divided the North and the South,
and why abolitionists feel so strongly about abolishing slavery.
Materials needed: Class set of computer/ipad
Part 3
Support needs:

Reliable technology software and hardware

The support of administration to spend two consecutive class periods on the
online virtual game.

Suggestions for improvement: This game is well thought out and engaging for
its players. I do not have any suggestions for improvements. The game is an
excellent for 5th grade students learning about the causes of the Civil War.
Overall reflection on the game integration activity: This game integration
activity was an interesting assignment that I can actually use in the classroom.
Looking for a game that matched learning targets and standards was challenging
because I wanted to find game simulations or virtual games where students
experience real life situations while learning. My goal next school year upon
graduation is to utilize as many virtual experience games as possible in the
classroom.
