Third Grade Math: An Overview

Guided Math is an environment in which students are afforded the opportunity to


work independently to build math skills, concepts, and strategies through the use of
teacher directed tasks and Math Work Stations. Guided Math is a time for students
to practice problem solving while reasoning, communicating, and making
connections among mathematical topics.
Each week:
Your child will meet with me for direct instruction on 3 rd grade standards
Third grade homework each week
Hands on activities for the standard that week
Online computer activity to practice the standard
Pre and post assessments (short quizzes) on 3 rd grade standards
Review of 2nd grade standards from whole group mini-lessons!
Beginning of the Year: (First 3 to 4 weeks)
Beginning of the year assessments
Place Value Review
Unit One: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100
Fluently add and subtract within 1,000
Unit Two: The Relationship between Multiplication and Division
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division
Unit Three: Patterns in Addition and Multiplication
Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in
arithmetic
Unit Four: Geometry
Reason with shapes and their attributes
Unit Five: Representing and Comparing Fractions
Develop understanding of fractions as numbers
Unit Six: Measurement
Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid
volumes, and masses of objects
Unit Seven: Show What We Know Review
