CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Cyber bullying is often done by children who have increasingly
early access to those technologies. The problem is compounded by the
fact that a bully can hide behind an electronic veil disguising his or her
true identity. This makes it difficult to trace the source and encourage
bullies to behave more aggressively than they might face- to- face.

Hence, we the researchers choose cyber bullying to be our

main topic because it is inline in our course, and it is the main problem
of the government because social media is now popular in our
generation.

STATE OF THE PROBLEM AND THE OBJECTIVE

This study will mainly answer: What are the effects of Cyber
bullying?
Furthermore, this study specifically aims to:
1. Give a warning to students who are making a cyber bullying.
2. Make students aware of the consequences of cyber bullying.
THESIS STATEMENT
Cyber bullying could harm people through social networking
sites, bullying can become a hindrance on their academic success;
Between cell phone, social media websites, and online gaming
to have more outlets for interacting with each other virtually than they
do for interacting with each other in person. According to Jennifer N.
Caudle (DO an AOA board. certified family physician in Philadelphia)
kids that are bullied likely to experience anxiety, depression,
loneliness, unhappiness and poor sleep. Bullying is a problem that, if
left unattended, can become a significant hurdle in a Childs
development.Copyright 2015, American Osteopathic Association. A
very small number of bullied children might retaliate through
extremely violent measures. In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the
1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied. By the U.S

THIS STUDY WILL BENEFIT:

A. Persons being bullied through social networking sites, because it
could help he person being bullied to fight for her/his rights.
B. Parents who have children addicted in social media, so that they
could give a warning to their children and also to their co- parent who
had children that is addicted too.
C. Government Officials, so that they could give importance to the
people who is a victim of cyber bullying.
D. The persons who bullies people through social media would realize
the effects of he/she has done to that person.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Each day school children learns valuable skills and lessons from
their teachers as well as through interactions with their peers.
Although school, undoubtedly, is beneficial to Youths, they are some

experiences, such as bullying, that may negatively affect and stick with
these children for the rest of their lives. However, in recent years this
age-old conflict has matched the pace of technological evolutions,
making it more dangerous and harder to contain. Cell phones, social
media, chat rooms and other forms of technology have allowed
bullying to expand into cyberspace. This Research Paper focuses on
Cyber bullying.

I. WHAT IS CYBER BULLYING?

Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place using electronic
technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment
such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication
tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites
Cyber bullying unquestionably has a negative impact on victims.
The fact that internet harassment is meant psychologically agitate its
victims lends it to being harmful to nature. Studies have shown that
victims feel a wide range of negative emotions as result of being cyber
bullied.
Based on: www.lba.k12.nf.ca/cyberbullying/effects.htm
STUDIES OF PEOPLE ABOUT CYBER BULLYING

Studies have indicated that the number of youth reporting cyber

bullying instances varies greatly depending on the definition of the
term and the age of those surveyed. In the following study by: Sameer
Hinduja and Justin W. Patchin (Cyber bullying Research Center,
sampled 4,441) Teens, ranging in age 11 to 18, from a large school
district in southern U.S. In the study, the researchers defined cyber
bullying as When someone repeatedly makes fun of another person
online or repeatedly picks on another person through email or text
message or when someone posts something online about another
person that they dont like
(Hindu and Patchin, 2010c, p.1).

(2000) involved a student who was expelled from school creating

a page on the internet that included threatening and derogatory
comments about members of the administration. The court ruled that
the school was justified in taking action due to its ability to prove that
the public information fostered an evident disruption of the school
environment. In its closing statements, the U.S. Supreme Court state
the following:Regrettably, in this day and age where school violence is
becoming more commonplace, school officials are justified in taking a
very seriously threats against faculty and other students by: J.S. v.
Bethlehem Area School.

VICTIMIZATIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIAS

According to results, Cyber bullying victimizations rates have varied
in the past few years, ranging between 18.8 percent in May 2007 and
28.7 percent in Nov. 2009 with the mean of 27.32 percent based on 7
different studies from May 2007-Feb.2010. (Hinduja and Patchin 2010g
p.1). According to a 2010 study, which asked teens what role
technology played in their daily lives, cell phones were used the most
(83%)., followed by the internet for school work (50.8%), and then
(50.1%) (Hindu and Patchin. 2010h, p.1)

FREQUENCY OF CYBER BULLYING
The 2010-2011 School Crime Supplement (National Center for
Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that 9%
of students in grades 612 experienced cyber bullying.

The 2013 Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance Survey finds that 15% of
high school students (grades 9-12) were electronically bullied in the
past year. Research on cyber bullying is growing. However, because
kids technology use changes rapidly, it is difficult to design surveys
that accurately capture trends.
II. EFFECTS OF CYBER BULLYING
Cell phones and computers themselves are not to blame for
cyber bullying. Social media sites can be used for positive activities,
like connecting kids with friends and family, helping students with
school, and for entertainment. But these tools can also be used to hurt
other people. Whether done in person or through technology, the
effects of bullying are similar.
Kids who are cyber bullied are more likely to:

Uses alcohol and drugs

Skips school
Experience in-person bullying
Be unwilling to attend school
Receive poor grades
Have lower self-esteem
Have more health problems

It was found that those who experienced cyber bullying also

experience a range of negative behaviours. These include:
Poor Concentration

Low school achievement

Absenteeism from the school

Another problem of these negative emotions and behaviours is

that the victims are more likely to resolve this strain through some sort
of antisocial behaviour. Cyber bullying is too new a phenomenon to tell
what is long term effects on an individual will be.

COMMON FEELINGS OF CYBER BULLIED TEENS OFTEN EXPERIENCE
Feel angry and vengeful- Sometimes victims of cyber bullying will
get angry about what is happening to them. As a result, they will take
to take revenge on the bully or bullies and engage in retaliation.
Feel anxious and depressed- Victims of cyber bullying often
succumb to anxiety, depression and other stress-related conditions.
This occurs primarily because cyber bullying erodes their selfconfidence and self-esteem.
Feel Suicidal- Cyber bullying increases the risk of suicide, kids that
are constantly tormented by peers through text message, instant
messaging, social media and other outlets. They would feel the only
way to ease the pain is through Suicide. As a result, they may begin to
fantasize about ending their life in order to escape their tormentors.

III.PREVENTION
As cyber bullying draws more attention, a universal has begun to
take shape within the law. Though not acknowledge across all states, a
common definition in congruence with a wider recognition of the
problem makes addressing the elusive issue a bit easier. The problem
is that technology will inevitably continue to advance. So, as
technology progresses, local and national anti-bullying policies and
laws must continue to evolve at a parallel rate. Many of the issue faced
by federal and state governments concerning cyber bullying are
avoidable for schools and communities at the local level through the
implementation of procedures to limit the effects of cyber bullying.
PREVENT CYBER BULLYING
Parents and kids can prevent cyber bullying. Together, they can explore
safe ways to use technology.

Be Aware of What Your Kids are Doing Online

Establish Rules about Technology Use

Understand School Rules

BE AWARE OF WHAT YOUR KIDS DOING ONLINE

Talk with your kids about cyber bullying and other online issues
regularly.
Know the sites your kids visit and their online activities. Ask where
theyre going, what theyre doing, and who theyre doing it with.
Tell your kids that as a responsible parent you may review their
online communications if you think there is reason for concern.
Installing parental control filtering software or monitoring programs
are one option for monitoring your childs online behaviour, but do
not rely solely on these tools.
Have a sense of what they do online and in texts. Learn about the sites
they like. Try out the devices they use.
ESTABLISH RULES ABOUT TECHNOLOGY USE
Establish rules about appropriate use of computers, cell phones,
and other technology. For example, be clear about what sites they
can visit and what they are permitted to do when theyre online.
Show them how to be safe online.
Help them be smart about what they post or say. Tell them not to
share anything that could hurt or embarrass themselves or others.
Once something is posted, it is out of their control whether someone
else will forward it.

Tell kids to keep their passwords safe and not share them with
friends. Sharing passwords can compromise their control over their
online identities and activities.
RECOGNITION OF THE PROBLEM
According to Dorothy Espalge and Susan Swearers book Bullying
in American Schools, A comprehensive program...is generally more
powerful in reducing bullying and increasing school safety than
concentrating on individuals students (Espelage and Swearer, 2009)
REPORT CYBER BULLYING
When cyber bullying happens, it is important to document and report
the behaviour so it can be addressed.

Steps to Take Immediately

Report Cyber bullying to Online Service Providers
Report Cyber bullying to Law Enforcement
Report Cyber bullying to Schools

STEPS TO TAKE IMMEDIATELY

Dont respond to and dont forward cyber bullying messages.
Keep evidence of cyber bullying. Record the dates, times, and
descriptions of instances when cyber bullying has occurred. Save
and print screenshots, emails, and text messages. Use this evidence
to report cyber bullying to web and cell phone service providers.
Block the person who is cyber bullying.

According to: Dorothy Espelga and Susan Swearers book

REPORT CYBER BULLYING TO ONLINE SERVICE PROVIDERS
Cyber bullying often violates the terms of service established by
social media sites and internet service providers.
Review their terms and conditions or rights and responsibilities
sections. These describe content that is or is not appropriate.
Visit social media safety center to learn how to block users and
change settings to control who can contact you.
REPORT CYBER BULLYING TO LAW ENFORCEMENT
When cyber bullying involves these activities it is considered a crime
and should be reported to law enforcement:
Threats of violence
Child pornography or sending sexually explicit messages or photos
Taking a photo or video of someone in a place where he or she
would expect privacy
Stalking and hate crimes
Some states consider other forms of cyber bullying criminal. Consult
your states laws and law enforcement for additional guidance.
PUNISHMENT FOR CYBER BULLYING
By: Mary Jane Freeman, eHow Contributor
Bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behaviour among
school-aged children on the federal website, stopbullying.gov, which is

managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Bullying can include spreading rumours, making threats, verbally or
physically attacking someone, or intentionally excluding someone from
a group. When bullying occurs through the use of electronic
technology, such as via social media, text messaging, websites and
chat, it becomes cyber bullying.

CYBER BULLYING LAWS

Virtually every state has enacted anti-bullying laws. Several
states, such as Oregon and New York, also include cyber bullying,
sometimes referred to as cyber stalking, in these laws. Although some
states don't specifically include the term, "cyber bullying" in their
bullying or harassment statutes, many expressly prohibit this type of
behaviour. For example, Texas and Vermont prohibit bullying using
"electronic means."
CONCLUSION
Bullying is deeply engrained in Peoples Culture. Our society
illustrates the pinnacle of capitalistic competition. This win-or-die-trying
atmosphere, the competitive college acceptance process, and much of
the corporate world, contribute too many of the bullying problems that
we battle today. The issues of bullying can only be contained in the
short term and not eliminated completely due to how deep-seeded

they have become in our competitive society. The clinical percussions

that bullying and cyber bullying have on todays youth present the
most.

METHODOLOGY
This study would use the Descriptive Design. Specifically a
survey would be conducted to give data on the Effects of Cyber
bullying.
The Researchers would Purposive Sampling to choose the
respondents of the study. Ten (10) students from the College of
Computer Studies specifically 1st Year students taking up Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology Sections A, B, D, E and CPE 1 would
be the respondents. A research made questionnaire would be used to
gather data. Furthermore an interview with Ms. Chenee Gatila
(Psychology Teacher) would also be conducted.

Frequency count and percentage would also be used to

present and analyze the data.

CHAPTER IV
ANALYSIS PRESENTATION AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This Chapter present the findings and interpretation of the
result of the study on Effects on Cyber Bullying toward to inform
other people.
The presentation of the result includes their difference by sex,
age and section. The respondents were classified according to their
sex, the male respondent have only 2; female have only 8.
In addition among our respondents among our respondents
seven (7) of them answered that they are willing to ban or to stop
cyber bullying, but 3 of them are not willing. And based on Ms. Chenee
Gatilas answer about the question, why do you think are some people
fond of bullying others online? She quote that I think some people
who used to bully others online are not aware that they are insecure
and immature people, it shows that they just want to gain the attention
of others.
