Part A:

NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE) is one of the largest electric power companies in North America with
electric generation facilities located in 27 states in the U.S. and 4 provinces in Canada. NEE provides
residential, commercial and wholesale electric services to its customers and owns generation,
transmission and distribution facilities to support its services, as well as has investments in gas
infrastructure assets. It also provides risk management services related to power and gas
consumption related to its own generation assets and for a limited number of wholesale customers in
selected markets. NEE is the largest generator in North America of renewable energy from the wind
and sun based on MWh produced.
NEE was incorporated in 1984 under the laws of Florida and conducts its operations principally through
two wholly owned subsidiaries, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and NextEra Energy
Resources, LLC (NEER). NextEra Energy Capital Holdings, Inc. (NEECH), another wholly owned
subsidiary of NEE, owns and provides funding for NEER's and NEE's operating subsidiaries, other than
FPL and its subsidiaries. NEE's two principal businesses also constitute NEE's reportable segments for
financial reporting purposes. NEECH's other business activities are primarily conducted through
NextEra Energy Transmission, LLC (NEET) and FPL Fiber Net. The company's service portfolio includes
customized Ethernet and Dedicated Internet Access, direct-to-cloud connections, security and DDoS
mitigation services. Their annual revenue was $17.5 billion in 2015-2016 primarily driven by their FPL
and NEER operations. FPL obtains its operating revenues primarily from the sale of electricity to retail
customers at rates established by the FPSC.
Part B:
The three strategic challenges faced by organizations were demand risk, innovation risk, and
inefficiency risk.
FPL(or NEE) has reduced the innovation risk by serving its customer the best class electricity with
hazard free cabling. With this they also provide world class support service through its online
channels. FPL also covers the innovation risk by providing the customers what they want such as
online payments with secured payment gateways with no extra charge, sharing different electricity
plans, helping through the residential or office movements.
Part C:
FPL has one of the finest and easy to navigate website by which not only consumers are able to view
the details about the company but also able to navigate for various uses like paying the bills,
commercial or residential deposits, outage complaints, start stop or move service etc.
FPL site has used various technological systems so as to protect from cyber-attacks or individuals
or group attempting to disrupt FPLs business.
FPL has provided its customers ease of access to their sites through various devices such as
computer desktops, laptops, mobile phones or notebooks/tablets. They have optimized for the
following browsers and mobile operating systems: IE 9+, Firefox 31+, Chrome 37+, Safari
6.1+, Apple iOS 7+ and Android 4+, thereby making themselves accessible to most, if not
all, consumers.
Protocols used are TCP/IP, EDI, HTTP/S, SSL (Secure socket layer). They also use SAP as their ERP
systems. They have used various analytics tools by which consumer can use in their daily lifes and
has used TV/Internet to advertise so as the consumers are aware of such technologies. One such

Part D:

Yes, security is a concern for the firm as there is always a risk for threats of terrorism and catastrophic
events that could result from cyber-attacks or individuals or groups attempting to disrupt FPL or NEEs
business. FPL collects millions of customers information including personal details and payments
channels. FPL or NEE also collects information when a customer visits their sites by tracking the IP
address along with browser type, browser settings, operating systems. Having all this information and
making sure this is safely secure is a challenging task for NEE, although they have been doing well by
addressing this security area.
NEE uses secured encryption through SSL Technology by which all the information are already
transmitted before it reaches the server. With this they have hosted their site through web.com by
which the site is hosted and controlled by Network Solutions Company who monitor the data on a
regular basis and checks for any malware or phishing information.
