SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
RULES
The Regatta will be governed by The ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012 (RRS),
these sailing instructions and the applicable class rules. In the event of conflict, the sailing instructions
shall govern.
Entry - the Regatta is open to:
IRC and Jersey Handicap Ratings and Classes. Yachts without an IRC handicap can apply for a Jersey
Handicap System (JHS) handicap by downloading an application form from St Helier Yacht Club,
http://www.shyc.je/Racing/Handicaps. This form must be submitted at least 3 days before the regatta
Dayboats
Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap for Dinghies
Beach Catamarans (ISAF)
Windsurfers
SAIL NUMBERS
All boats shall carry a number or distinguishing mark on the sail throughout the Regatta.
COURSES
The following courses are traditional courses which have been sailed for many years at the Gorey
Regatta. The Course Card shows the approximate positions of the buoys.
Note 1 All marks are to be left to starboard unless the course is reversed, in which case all such marks
are to be left to port.
Note 2 Courses are to be sailed twice round unless otherwise programmed or signalled, boats must
pass through the finish line at the end of each round.
Course A Flag A (white with blue swallowtail)
Start west to east - Fairway buoy - Horn Rock Beacon - Fort Henry mark - West mark - Finish
west to east.
Reverse course
Flag R (red with yellow cross) flown with the warning signal indicates that yachts must cross the
starting and finishing lines from East to West, and leave the marks of the course to port.
Shorten course
Flag S (white with blue centre) will be hoisted inferior to the event flag, and the race will be once
round only. If it is necessary to shorten the course after the race has started, a sound signal will be
made when the shorten course signal is hoisted.
In extreme conditions, the shorten course signal may signify that the race will finish at one of the
marks of the course instead of at the finishing line. In this case a boat flying a distinguishing flag will
anchor close to the mark to be used, and the finishing line will be between the mark and the mast of
the boat.
Note: If guns misfire or sound signals fail, the flag signals remain valid.
THE START
Races will be started as specified in RRS 26 with the warning signal given 5 minutes before the
starting signal as follows;
Signal Flag and sound Minutes before starting signal
Warning Class flag, 1 sound 5
Preparatory Preparatory flag raised, 1 sound 4
One-minute Preparatory flag removed, 1 sound 1
Start Class flag removed, 1 sound 0
The starting line will be a transit of two poles mounted on the balcony on the north side of the harbour
office. The back pole will bear a white cross and the front pole an orange triangle. Care should be
taken not to confuse these transit poles with the signal mast. Starters must pass inside an orange outer
limit buoy.
Boats whose warning signal has not yet been made shall keep clear of the starting area.
THE FINISH
The finish will be a line between the front pole bearing an orange triangle and the yellow outer limit
buoy.
TIME LIMITS
For Saturday and Sunday races from Gorey if no boat has completed the course within one and a half
hours of the start the race will be abandoned. Boats finishing after this cut off time must complete the
course within 30 minutes of the cut off time.
PROTESTS
Protests must be received by the Race Officer at Gorey Pier Head within 30 minutes of the end of the
appropriate race, on the prescribed RYA form, accompanied by a fee of £5 which will be forfeited to
the regatta funds if the protest is not upheld. Protests should be advised to the Race Officer by radio on
Channel 74 to help speed up the process if possible. The dinghy fleet will have access to a radio on the
beach. Protests will be held in the Harbourmaster’s Office at the end of Gorey Pier as soon as possible
after the day’s racing.
RADIO COMMUNICATION
Cruising yachts having VHF radio are requested to keep a listening watch on Channel 16 in case their
services are required for rescue purposes. Gorey Pierhead can be contacted on channel 74.
PRIZES
Prizes will be given at the Prizegiving Buffet at The Moorings at 1800 on Sunday 6 June 2010.

DECLARATION
I agree to be bound by the Racing Rules of Sailing and all other rules that govern this event. I understand that
neither the Gorey Regatta Association (the Organising Authority) nor their representatives shall be liable for any
loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the owner/competitor, his/her skipper or crew, as a
result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover, every owner/competitor warrants the suitability of his
boat for the races. The safety of a boat and her entire management including insurance shall be the sole
responsibility of the owner/competitor who must ensure that the boat is fully found, thoroughly seaworthy, and
manned by a crew of sufficient number and experience who are physically fit to face bad weather. The
owner/competitor must be satisfied as to the soundness of the hull, spars, rigging and all gear. He/she must ensure
that all safety equipment is properly maintained, stowed and in date and that the crew know where it is kept and
how it is to be used. Neither the establishment of these conditions, their use by the race organisers, nor the
inspection of the boat under these conditions in any way limits the absolute responsibility of the owner/competitor.
The crew are nonetheless advised to satisfy themselves as to the experience of the skipper and the adequacy of all
safety equipment and insurance arrangements.
I declare that:
The boat and its crew holds adequate insurance and in particular insurance against third party claims at least to
the minimum cover recommended by the RYA (currently £2M) and that such cover will be in force and maintained
in full force and effect throughout the Regatta.
