Necessary Skills
This activity helps students to practice talking about necessity using the phrases: have to,
have got to, and need to.
Before the class, make a copy of the occupations sheet and cut out the separate slips. Also,
make a copy of the skills sheet for each student.
Procedure
Give one occupation slip to each student. Tell the students to keep their job a secret.
Give each student a copy of the skills sheet.
The students task is to discover which classmate has which occupation by asking questions
about the qualifications and skills necessary for that job.
Example Questions:
Do you have to have knowledge of medicine?
Have you got to drive fast in your job?
Do you need to be athletic?
Do you have to read music for your profession?
Have you got to change your appearance for your job?
The students cannot directly ask, Are you an actor? or Are you a truck driver?
When the time is up, the student who has correctly identified the professions of the largest
