Highlights of Summer Olympics at Rio
The 31st edition of Summer Olympic Games
opened in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro on 5th
August 2016. The theme of the 31st edition of
Summer Olympic Games was World peace and
Environment. India, which has fielded its biggest
ever contingent of around 120 sportspersons was
led by flag-bearer and Olympic Gold medallist
Abhinav Bindra. Sakshi Malik was the flag-bearer
at the Closing Ceremony held on 21st August 2016.
United States of America had the highest medal
tally with 121 medals(46 Gold, 37 Silver and 38
Bronze), followed by Great Britain with 67 medals
(27 Gold, 23 Silver and 17 Bronze) and China with
70 medals (26 Gold, 18 Silver and 23 Bronze). India
finished at 67th position, with two medals P V
Sindhu won the Silver Medal in Womens
Badminton against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan and
conceding to Carolina Marin of Spain in the finals.
Sakshi Malik won the Bronze Medal in the
Womens freestyle 58Kg Wrestling event against
Aisuluu Tynybekova from Kyrgystan. Dipa
Karmakar missed the bronze medal by a whisker
(0.15 points) short of Giulia Steingruber of
Switzerland in the Womens Vault event.
A few Highlights
Michael Phelps of USA won 5 Golds and 1 Silver
in the Swimming events.
Ma Long is the fifth male Grand Slam winner at
Rio Olympics. He defeated Chinas Zhang Jike to
win the gold medal in Table Tennis.
Katie Ledecky(USA) sets a new world record to
win gold in the womens 400 meters freestyle
swimming.
Judoka Rafaela Silva won the first ever gold for
host country Brazil in the womens 57kg judo.
Usain Bolt won 3 Gold medals in the 100 meter,
200m and 4 x 100m relay.
Brazil won its first Olympic Gold medal in
soccer.

2016.
The Olympic games in Rio kept all of us glued to the
screens. PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik have brought
home silver and bronze medals respectively.

From this month onwards, the news board replaces


the Law Bulletin. Do go through the persons, places
and events of August. However, you still need to read
the newspaper for more details and comprehensive
coverage. The News board will be published in the
first week of every month covering news items of the
previous month.
The last page contains the Crossword for this issue as
well as the key for crossword in the previous law
bulletin. Do mail in your entries latest by 18th
September.

1. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) had given a clean chit to wrestler Narsingh Yadav and exonerated
him of all charges of doping. However, the Court of Arbitration of Sports(CAS) has slapped him with a fouryear ban, while hearing into the World Anti-Doping Agencys appeal against the clean chit given to him by
NADA.
2. Justice Manjula Chellur has been named the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. She is the second
female Chief Justice of Bombay High Court after Justice Sujata Manohar.
3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui won the best actor award at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2016 for his role of
psycho serial killer in Raman Raghav 2.0
4. Lewis Hamilton has won the German Grand Prix title. This is his sixth win in seven consecutive races.
5. Skydiver Luke Aikins of the United States is the first person in the world to jump from 25,000 feet without
parachute and landing safely in a net.
6. Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Rani Singh Nair has been appointed as Chairperson of Central
Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
7. Anant Maheshwari, the new President of Microsoft India, will succeed Bhaskar Pramanik, who retires in
March 2017.
8. Novak Djokovic (World no 1) from Serbia has won the 2016 ATP Toronto Masters also known as the Rogers
Cup title in the mens single category.
9. Indian-American Braj B Kachru, the linguist passed away in Illinois. He coined the term World English and
is famous for studies on Kashmiri. He has also authored the acclaimed book The Alchemy of English: The
Spread, Functions and Models of Non-Native Englishes.
10. Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, leader of Nepals Moist party, is the PM of Nepal as only his name remained
on the ballot upon the expiry of the deadline for nominations. K.P. Sharma Oli had resigned just before he
faced a no-confidence motion in the Nepal Parliament.
11. Vijay Rupani took oath as the new CM of Gujarat, following the resignation of Anandiben Patel increasing
challenges to the BJP government, the protest by the Patels against her government, and the Dalits revolt
against the atrocities on their community. Nitin Patel has been appointed as his deputy.
12. The 23rd Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award will be given to Shubha Mudgal. She will be honoured for
her outstanding contribution towards the promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill. She has
previously received the Padma Shri in 2000.
13. Indian-American Pramila Jayapal has won the open primary for the 7th Congressional District in the State of
Washington and could make history as the first woman from the community to enter the U.S. Congress if
she wins the November general election.
14. Youssef Chahed has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Tunisia. Prior to this, Chahed was Minister for
Local Affairs of Tunisia. He is an agricultural sciences specialist and academic who has taught in France and
Tunisia. The appointment came after parliament ousted Habib Essid in a vote of no-confidence because of
his handling of economic reforms and security.
15. Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari has been appointed as the 39th Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
16. Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale appointed as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. He succeeds Justice
D.Y. Chandrachud- appointed judge of Supreme Court.
17. Eminent Assamese litterateur Mahim Bora has passed away. Bora was a Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi
winner for his most popular work Edhani Mahir Hanhi, and was known for his poetry and short stories.
18. Australian surfing champion, Bernard Farrelly (a.k.a Midget for his slight size) died on 7th August 2016 at the
age of 71.
19. The CM of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadanvis was chosen for the 2016 Nag Bhutan Award which is conferred
by Nagpur based NGO, Nag Bhutan Foundation.
20. Indian Grandmaster, Abhijeet Gupta won the 2016 Commonwealth Chess Championship in Colombo, Sri
Lanka

21. Vietnam Veedu Sundaram, a well known Tamil Scriptwriter and Director passed away and in Chennai, Tamil
Nadu.
22. Former RBI Deputy Governor Anand Sinha was appointed to the Board of IDFC Bank.
23. TKV Desikacha, a renowned Yoga Guru passed away. He founded the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram
24. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Dinesh Kumar Khara as the Managing
Director of SBI
25. Sriram Rajamani was appointed as MD of Microsoft India lab. He replaced Chandu Thekkath.
26. Pakistans legendary former captain and batsman Hanif Muhammad, who held the record for the longest
innings in Test cricket, passed away from lung cancer.
27. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board of Governeres unanimously re elected Takehiko Nakao as
President of ADB.
28. V P Singh Badnore has been sworn in as the new Governor of Punjab
29. Sunita Jain, a Hindi writer and scholar was awarded the prestigious Vyas Samman Award, 2016, for her
poetry collection Kshama.
30. S R Nathan, the former President of Singapore of Indian origin, passed away at the age of 92.
31. Subrata Banerjee, the internationally renowned cricket umpire, passed away in Kolkata.
32. N Ramachandran, the President of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), was bestowed with the Olympic Order,
for distinguished contributions to the Olympic Movement internationally.
33. Urjit Patel was appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, after Raghuram Rajan. He will
be serving as the 24th Governor.
34. Squash player, Dipika Pallikal won the PSA Australian Open defeating Mayar Hany of Egypt.
35. Kamal Hassan, was chosen as the recipient for the prestigious French honour of Chevalier de LOrdre Arts et
Lettres, also known as The Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. This award is one of Frances Premier
awards.
36. P D Gupta has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), for a
tern of 5 years.
37. Bill Gates tops Forbes richest tech tycoons list 2016 with an estimated USD 78 billion. Only two Indians,
Wipro chairman Azim Premji (13th) and HCL co-founder Shi Nadar(17th) have been featured in this list.
38. Founder chairperson of Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani has been elected as an individual member of the
International Olympic Committee (IOC). With this, she becomes the first Indian woman to join the
prestigious body which governs Olympic sports in the world.
39. Noted filmmaker Aishwaryaa Dhanush was appointed United Nations Womens Advocate for Gender
Equality and Womens Empowerment in India. In her new role she will help raise awareness of UN Womens
core message of gender equality and womens empowerment across India.
40. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has decided to appoint Olympic silver medallist P. V. Sindhu as
its honorary commandant and brand ambassador. It was announced by CRPFs Director General K. Durga
Prasad after she had agreed to become the Indias largest paramilitary forces brand ambassador. In this
regard, CRPF also has moved the proposal before the Home Ministry. She will be given honorary
Commandant rank in the CRPF which is equivalent to the position of a Superintendent of Police (SP) and
such an officer who commands a battalion of about 1,000 personnel.
41. Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutts bronze medal from the 2012 London Summer Olympics has been
upgraded to silver. This up gradation comes after silver medalist late Besik Kudukhov from Russia was
stripped off his medal for failing a dope test. Kudukhov was found to have used a banned substance in a test
conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
42. Wrestler Sakshi Malik was named as Haryanas brand ambassador for Beti Bachao, Beti Padao (save
daughter, educate daughter) campaign in Haryana.

1. The floods in Assam have swept away at least 13 of Kaziranga National Parks iconic rhinos.
2. The Rajya Sabha approved the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which means that IITs will soon
come up in Jammu, Tirupati, Palakkad, Goa, Dharwad and Bhilai.
3. Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to approve a sewage and waste water policy. The policy
was approved by the State Cabinet meeting presided by CM Vasundhara Raje in Jaipur.
4. Union Education Minister Prakash Javadekar inaugurated IIT-Bhilai in Chattisgarh and IIT-Dharwad in
Karnataka.
5. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to rename the Madras High Court as the Tamil
Nadu High Court.
6. A rare Yew tree has been discovered in China. The extract of the tree is used to cure cancer, and the tree is
believed to be about 3000 years old. Called a living fossil of the plant world.
7. National Tourism Awards for the year 2014-15 were presented for the various sectors in the travel, tourism

8. The worlds largest indoor theme park will be opened in United Arab Emirates (UAE)
9. The tropical storm named Earl, triggered landslides in Mexico.
10. The Global Innovation Index 2016 was released by France-based international business school INSEAD and
World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The index ranks
world economies since 2007 according to their innovation capabilities using more than 80 indicators.
Switzerland, Sweden, UK, U.S., Finland and Singapore lead the 2016 rankings of the worlds most innovative
economies; China joins the top 25. India has ranked 66th in the 2016 Global Innovation Index (GII). In this
edition, India has jumped up by 15 spots from 81st position in 2015 GII.

Events of Significance
1. First railway connection between Tripura and Delhi has been setup with the Tripura Sundari Express
connecting Delhi to Agartala in Tripura. On the same note, foundation stone has been laid for India-Bangladesh
broad-gauge link between Agartala and Akhaura.
2. The Patna Pirates won the 4th edition of STAR Sports-ProKabaddi League defeating Jaipur Pink Panthers. Patna
Pirates is the first team to bag the title for 2 consecutive years. Puneri Paltan claimed the third place.
3. The Parliament has passed Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to conduct a uniform entrance
examination for admission. The provisions of the bill will come into force retrospectively from May 24, 2016.
4. The Union Govt has capped the prices of 24 essential drugs used for treating cancer, HIV, bacterial infections,
anxiety and cardiac conditions.
5. PM Modi will launch a new mobile app for the PM Office in order to celebrate two years of the governments
online citizen engagement platform Mygov.in. The app, developed by a team of engineering students from
Delhi Technical University, aims to provide every citizen access to the PMs office through a mobile device.
6. The Delhi High Court has ruled that the National Capital Territory of Delhi continues to be a Union Territory
under the administrative control of the Lt Governor.

7. Google has released a new application called Verne: the Himalayas. It is specially designed for children to
let them explore the Himalayas using maps, 3D imagery and gameplay.
8. The Union Government has launched a nationwide breastfeeding program called MAA (Mothers Absolute
Affection). The program aims to create awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding, and was launched by
the Ministry for Health and Family Welfare. World Breastfeeding Week is also observed from 1-7th August.
9. The Union Govt has set an inflation target of four per cent for the next five years. Union Govt will set up a
Monetary Policy Committee to adhere to the target till March 31, 2021.
10. The circuit bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the inspection of all industrial units
located on the banks of the Periyar river to check the feasibility of effluent treatment plants and to find out
whether the effluents discharged into the river are within the prescribed parameter.
11. China successfully launched its first satellite for mobile telecommunication, Tiantong-01 from Xichang
Satellite Launch Centre.
12. PM Narandra Modi launched Mission Bhagiratha at Komatibanda in Medak district, Telangana. The project
aims to provide piped drinking water to every household.
13. Voters in Thailand approved a new draft constitution giving extra powers to the military.
14. The international Meeting for Counter Terrorism will be held in Bali, Indonesia on 10th August. The theme of
this multilateral meeting is Countering Cross- Border movement of Terrorism. The Minister of State for
Home Affairs, Kiran Rijiju will attend the meeting from India.
15. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has signed a pact with Manipur government to
provide improved hospitality and tourism services to their customers.
16. The Union Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu launched the Swachh Suvekshan-2017
project in New Delhi to assess and rank 500 cities and rank 500 cities based on levels of sanitation and
efforts made by respective local bodies
17. Ministry of HRD celebrated a 15-day programme titled 70 Saal Azadi Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani (Freedom
Fortnight) to commemorate freedom fighters. The program was launched on 9th August at Alirajpur, Madhya
Pradesh, the birth place of Chandrasekhar Azad.
18. Australia won the gold in first ever Olympic Womens Rugby Sevens Championship.
19. The Wildlife Institute of India will house Indias first repository on tigers under its new Tiger Cell in
Dehradun. It is funded by National Tiger Conservation Authority.
20. Women and Child Development Minister, Maneka Gandhi launched a social media campaign in New Delhi to
mark Daughters Day which is celebrated on 11th August.
21. Maharashtra organized various initiatives to mark the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations(75th anniversary) of the
1942 Quit India Movement.
22. The Niti Aayog and US Energy Information Administration (EIA) inked a pact to set up a portal to host all data
related to energy sector of the country.
23. Minister of State for Home, Hansraj Ahir stated that the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and System
(CCTNS) project will be operational by 31st March, 2017. The objective of the project is to interconnect
police stations across the country and digitize the data related to FIR registration, investigation and charge
sheets etc.
24. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with IIT-Kharagpur for research project to develop technology to construct long lasting maintenance free
highways in India.
25. The Union government will constitute a committee to review e-commerce rules which will be headed by
NITI Aayogs CEO, Amitabh Kant.
26. China has successfully launched Gaofen-3, an earth Observation Satellite. It is Chinas first low-orbit
remote satellite and is capable of capturing high resolution images.
27. Indias atomic power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is setting uo two 1000 Mw
Russian reactors in Kundankulam village in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu.
28. The government has approved the amendments made to the Maternity Benefits Act 1061 which aims to
raise maternity leave for women from 12 weeks to 26 weeks.

29. Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) launched the first Indian facility to produce nickel, in Jharkhand.
30. Nitish Kumar led Bihar Government has agreed to implement the Pradhan Mantri Bima Yojana which is a
new crop insurance scheme under which farmers premium has been kept at a maximum 2% for foodgrains
and oilseeds and up to 5% for horticulture and cotton crops.
31. The international Biodiesel Day is observed on August 10th to create awareness about the importance of
non-fossil fuels
32. The International Youth Day (IYD) is observed every year on August 12th. The 2016 theme is The Road to
2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production
33. The Assam Government has recently launched Rhino horn verification process for verifying the genuineness
of Rhino horns which were recovered since 1980s and stored in various treasuries.
34. Assam is the first Indian state to ratify the GST Constitution Amendment Bill.
35. The 12 day long Krishna Pushkar festival was celebrated in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 12th to 23rd
August. The festival is celebrated every 12 years.
36. The first Indian TV Channel on higher education and skill development has been launched by Millionlights
(an education content provider) in partnership with DEN Manoranjan Satellite in Pune, Maharashtra.
37. The Syndicate Bank has embarked on a digital transformation program Project Ananya to focus on
improved customer service and to offer latest in digital banking services.
38. Indias first touch and feel garden for the visually impaired was unveiled in Calicut University, Kerala.
39. Times Internet join hands with HDFC Bank to launch co-branded card called the Times Points Debit Card.
40. The National Association of Software and Services (NASSCOM), an apex IT Industry body in India has
launched its startup warehouse at Sunrise Startup Village at Rushikonda in Vishakapatam, Andhra Pradesh.
This is the first such facility for IT professionals in AP.
41. The 2016 BRICS Disaster Management conference has started in Udaipur, India. The main themes of this
second edition of the conference include: Flood Risk Management and the Forecasting of Extreme Weather
Events in the context of Changing Climate.
42. Andhra Pradesh launched Indias first DIS or DNA Index System, to control crime rates in the state.
43. Myanmar announced its support for Chinas One Road and One Belt initiative. The OROB is a venture to
revive the historical trade route, the Silk Road.
44. India ranks 3rd in the technology-driven start ups list, recently published by Assocham, following UK and US,
in first and second places respectively.
45. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
Microsoft India to offer telecom and IT solutions for big businesses to meet the demand for IT and cloud
services.
46. India has signed pact with Germany on vocational training, which aims to foster conditions to create and
improve workplace-based vocational training in Indias industrial clusters.
47. China has recently launched its first Tibetan-language search engine Yongzin. In the Tibetan language,
Yongzin means master or teacher. The search engine will serve as a unified portal for all major Tibetanlanguage websites in China. It has 8 sections for news, websites, images, videos, music, encyclopedia,
literature and forums.
48. PM Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated the newly renovated Stor
Palace that will now house the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Afghanistan
49. The 2016 International Kabaddi World Cup will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, between October 7th and
22nd, 2016. There are 12 participating teams, from all the Olympic continents, including, India, Canada,
United States, United Kingdom, Iran, Australia, Poland, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Korea, Japan and Kenya.
50. The first Asian Science and Technology (S&T) Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) was held at
Bangkok in Thailand on August 23-24, 2016.
51. The Union government has recently launched Accessible E-Library Sugamya Pustakalaya for Divyang in New
Delhi under Prime Ministers Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan. It will have an archive of over 2 lakhs books in
diverse languages. It will be available in multiple, accessible formats.

52. President Pranab Mukherjee launched the Akashvani Maitree Channel, which will be catering to audiences
in West Bengal, Bangladesh and other areas.
53. Maharashtra has become the first Indian State to have its own internal Security Bill, 2016 Maharashtra
Protection of Internal Security Act (MPISA).
54. The Indian Railways has partnered with tech-company Google for showcasing its heritage on digital
platforms.
55. Google has announced the release of its latest Android update, Nougat, for Nexus devices.
56. The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
between India and Myanmar in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine. It is to boost the importance of
AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) systems of medicine, their
conservation, production and standardisation.
57. Odisha government launched Baristha Bunker Sahayata Yojana which is a special assistance scheme for
elderly weavers. Under this scheme, the state government would provide Rs.500 pension to the weavers.
58. The 2-day SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) meet of Finance Ministers was held on
25-26 August 2016 in Islamabad, Pakistan. Shaktikanta Das, Economic Affairs Secretary (Ministry of Finance),
led the Indian delegation at the meeting as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, declined attending the conference
in the wake of growing tensions with Pakistan. The meeting focused on promoting double tax avoidance and
improving trade relations among member nations.
59. The Union Cabinet approved a revised Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and the Prevention of
Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income between India and Cyprus. The revised DTAA provides for
source-based taxation of capital gains on transfer of shares instead of one based on residence. Thus, it is
considered as a major step in the fight against tax evasion, round tripping and base erosion/profit shifting.
60. Gujarat has become the first state in the country to distribute two crore LED bulbs under the Centres UJALA
(Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All) scheme. State-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), under
the administration of the Union Power Ministry had distributed about 2 lakh bulbs daily in Gujarat.
61. The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, launched the Protection of
Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) e-box, in New Delhi. POCSO e-box is an online complaint
management system for easy and direct reporting of sexual offences against children and timely action
against offenders under POCSO Act, 2012.
