Topic:Isrecycledwaterharmful?

RecycledwaterorReclaimedwater,isessentiallywasteorsewagewaterthathasbeentreated
toremovesolidsandimpurities.Itisthenusedforthepurposesoflandscapeirrigation,
groundwateraquifierstomeetthecommercialandindustrialneedsofwateranddrinking.
However,muchcontroversyhassurroundedthetopicofwhetherthiswaterisharmfultothe
environmentaswellastohumansasapossiblesourceofdrinkingwater.

Totreatrecycledwaterfitforthepurposeofdrinking,ithastobeprocessedthrough5treatment
levelspreliminary,primary,secondary,tertiaryandadvanced.Mostofthesetreatmentlevels
usefiltrationandtheprocessofflocculationtoremovesuspendedsolidsandheavymetals.
Thesecanbeseenbelowinfigure1.


Flocculationisderivedfromthewordfloc,anotherwordforflakesormaterial.Flocculation
occurswhensedimentsaggregateintoclumpsthataremuchlargerandeasiertofilterout.An
exampleofthisprocessisremovingclayparticlesfromawatersolutionwhichcanalsobepart
oftherecyledwatertreatmentproces.Aggregationofclayparticlescannotoccurnaturallyas
thenegativesurfacechargesonthearticlescausethemtorepeloneanotherandpreventthe
requiredcollisionsnecessaryforaggregation.Thelargeraggregatedparticlessettleoutunder
theinfluenceofgravitytoformasoliddeposit.Aluminiumionsareaddedtothewatercontaining
clayparticlesintheformofaluminiumsulphate.Thesealuminiumionsinwaterundergo
numerousacidbasereactionsthatcanbesummarisedthroughthefollowingequation:
Alaq+2HOlHOCl(aq)+HO(aq)+Cl(aq)

Theabsorbtionofthehighlychargedaluminiumspeciesontothenegativelychargedsurfacesof
theclayparticlesneutralisesthesurfacechargeandreducestherepulsiveforcesbetweenthe
particles.Thisallowsparticlestocollideandaggregateandthereforefiltrationcantakeplace.

Otherthenbeingusedforthepurposeofforestry,growingrawhumanfoodcropsanddrinking,
thereisanegativeviewtousingrecycledwater.AccordingtoRecycledWaterAustralia,
recycledwaterdoeshaveenvironmetalrisksonebeingSalinity.Thisisachronicproblem
whichcausesoneofthebiggestconcernsaccordingtoRecyledWaterAustralia.Thisproblem
canresultinreducedplantgrowthfromcommonsaltsandsodiumchlorides.Ifitisdischarged
directlywithalittledilution,itcanhaveanimpactoffreshwaterplantsandinvertebratesintheir
naturalecosystems(Recycledwater.com.au,2016)

Howeveraswellasenvronmentalconcerns,accordingtoDougWilson,boardpresidentforthe
PadreDamMunicipalWaterDistrict,recycledwatermaybethenextbestthing.Wilsonsays
thefactsare,allwaterisrecycled.InAmerica,manygasstationshavesoldrecyledwater
since2008.ThosewhohaveboughtwateratDisneyLandhavehadrecycledwater.Rather
thanpipingwater,recylingisdefinitelythecheaperoption(ABC10News,2015).Accordingto
theNationalGuidelinesofrecyclingwaterinAustralia,establishedin2008,andwiththe
increasingdemandforthewatersupply,recyclingisgoingtobecomeoftheussual.Theaimof
theguidelinesistomakesuretherecyclingprocessiscompletedsafelywithoutbeing
sidetrackedbythedebateofwhetheritisagoodorbadidea(Environment.gov.au,2016).

Giventherecentdatafound,itseemsasifrecycledwaterisharmfultoanextent.Recycled
waterisnotnew,itisjustbeinguseddifferentlyandresearchersarecurrentlystillinthetesting
phaseforsomewater.Howeverifgasstationsandplaceslikedisneylandhavebeenusingit
forafewyears,itdoesntseemliketheresanyproblemwithhumansconsumingit.However
therearemanyenvironmentalproblemsconcerningrecycledwaterwhichmakesitdifficultto
cometoaconclusion.Itshouldbeusedforthepurposeofdrinkinghowevermoretestingis
requiredforrecycledwatertobeconfirmedsafefortheenvironment.

Recycledwaterisausefulandcleversourceofwaterforthepresentdayandthefutureto
come.Giventhedemandofwater,itisessentialthathumandohaveabackforfutureoptions.
Recycledwaterhassofarnotbeenproventobeharmfulorhaveharmfuleffectshumans
howevermostcontroversyhasmainlyfocusedontheappealfactor.Recycledwaterissafeto
humanhoweverithasbeenproventobeharmfultowardstheenvironment.
