PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to serve guidelines in the execution of the local post weld heat treatment
process on carbon steel materials (piping) of Topside H04 TGT project.
2.
SCOPE
This scope of the procedure is applicable for furnace and local PWHT. This procedure describes the
extent of application temperature control, heat treatment method and documentation of the results for
piping and component. Post weld heat treatment of carbon steel materials shall be in accordance with
ASME B31.3-2010; ASME B31.8-2010 or indicated in the approved drawing.

PROCEDURE
5.1
General
a. HT shall perform PWHT only when required by PVC-MS with a written request.
b. UT or RT shall be performed on welds prior to PWHT. Only welds that are free of unacceptable
defects shall be heat treated.
c. The environment in which heat treatment is to be performed shall be free from sulphur
compound and halide. These compounds are harmful to the material during heat treatment.
d. No cutting or welding shall be made on welds that have been post weld heat treated, unless
approved by the project QA/QC Manager or other changes made in the drawing approved.
e. Joints for PWHT shall be properly supported to prevent deflection/ distortion.
f. Areas within the PWHT are to be conducted shall be dry and protected from rain.
g. PWHT shall be carried out within 14 days after welding completed.
5.2
Equipment
Following are the general requirement for equipment used on local PWHT.
Equipment shall be calibrated every 6 months by third party. Calibration certificate shall be
presented to PVC-MS/ HLJOC Representative before carrying out the job.

Method of PWHT
Localized post weld heat treatment operation shall be accomplished using electric heat method by
means of control heating and cooling. The heating cycle, time, temperatures are recorded on a chart
recorder.
5.4
5.5
Thermocouples
Thermocouples shall be attached by capacitance discharge method such as by means of special
thermocouple welding unit.
Thermocouple shall be placed near the centre of the weld cap
Care shall take to ensure that the thermocouple wires shall not be detached away during the heating
operation.
Thermocouple wires shall be type K chrome/aluminium or equivalent that can withstand 900 0C
temperature.
For the number and position of thermocouples refer to Figure 2-Typical set-up for local PWHT.
5.6
Insulation
Insulation material such as ceramic fiber 50mm blanket thick or equivalent material shall be used to
insulate the heated band to avoid harmful temperature gradient.

Revision No.: 1

Date: 01 Dec 2011
Insulation for butt connection: the minimum insulated band width shall be 5 RT (R = Inside
radius; T = maximum wall thickness at weld) on each side of the weld, or for a minimum distance
of 300 mm beyond the outermost edges of the heated band. (Refer to Figure 2)
Insulation for branch connection shall be as Figure 3
5.7
Temperature recorder
The heat treatment temperature shall be monitored by calibrated thermocouple pyrometers.
Calibration shall be every twelve months and the calibration certificates will be reviewed by the
Project QA/QC Manager, or his nominated deputy and submitted to the PVC-MS/ HLJOC
Representative for review and approval prior to carrying out heat treatment.
5.8
25.4 (mm)
(mins)
The cooling rates from soaking temperature shall not exceed 260 0C/hr per inch of material
thickness until the temperature goes down to 400 0C. Below 4000C, the heat treated assembly may
be cool to ambient temperature in still air.
Not more than 6 weld joints shall be treated in one heat and recorded in one chart sheet. Every
treated joint shall be recorded.
5.9
Inspection.
After PWHT, the weld joint shall be subjected to NDE required in Weld Map.
5.10 Retreatment.
Any retreatment shall be discussed by HT with PVC-MS and HLJOC.
Retreatment may be performed, but with no more than twice (reference is made to ASME SA-530
para. 17 or SA-599 para. 19).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
6.1
Personnel
All technicians performing PWHT shall have field experience and be well conversant with PWHT
and the equipment to be used.
6.2
Safety
Heating transformers and machines shall be in good condition. Earth connection of the machines
shall be properly connected to avoid any unwanted incident occurring during the heat treatment
process.
All cables and wires from the heating elements shall be identified to their connections on the
heating machine. There shall be no unused cables connected to the heating transformer or machine
to avoid electric shock and for safety purposes.
Areas where PWHT is being carried out shall be cordoned off and safety signboards shall be
displayed. Only authorized personnel are allowed in the areas.
7.
RECORDS
The temperature charts will be identified and reference to the thermocouple arrangement, chart
speed, line No/pipe spool No, weld No, type of material on the chart record, date, time, method, and
name of the technician, or technician, carrying out the process.
Reference shall be made to the weld identity and the applicable drawing number on the Post Weld
Heat Treatment Report (refer to appendix 2).
All PWHT reports (refer to Appendix 2) shall be prepared by the technician, checked by the QC
Inspector and approved by the Companys Representative.
