JAMAICA
Vinci-led joint venture has won a US$147 million (130.20 million) contract to
extend the port of Kingston, Jamaica.
The joint venture includes Vinci Grands Projets, EMCC and Jan de Nul.
The project comprises the refurbishment, reinforcement and upgrade of 1,200m of
quays. The joint venture will also carry out dredging work in the access channel. Vinci
said the project will be completed in 25 months time. The company added that the
project would enable larger ships to operate at the port.
The project begins just days after the opening of the expanded Panama Canal, and
Vinci said the contract to extend the port of Kingston was a strategic move for the
region. It said the port of Kingston was ideally located near the Panama Canal at the
crossroads between north/south and east/west sea lanes and will therefore become
one of the three main container terminals in the Caribbean.

BUSINESS NEWS
BUSINESS IN BRIEF
REVENUES DOWN
French contractor Vinci recorded a 1.5% decrease
in its revenues to 17.6 billion. The company
said it saw sustained growth in its subsidiaries
Vinci Autoroutes and Vinci Airports, while it saw
a contraction in its subsidiaries Eurovia and Vinci
Construction. It also reported stable business
activity at Vinci Energies.
TOUGH YEAR AHEAD
German-based Bilfinger has announced half-year
revenues of 2.14 billion for the sixth-month period
a decrease of 11% year-on-year. The company
said that both its segments industrial and power
decreased as expected. Bilfingers earnings before
interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) came to a
loss of 13 million.
OPTIMISM
Dutch company Bam saw its revenues fall but its
profits rise in the first half of 2016, resulting in
positivity from the top. The companys revenues
were recorded at 3.4 billion, which is a decrease
of 3.1% year-on-year. However, Bams construction
and M&E (mechanical and electrical) sector saw
improved revenues of 1.62 billion, up 2.9%.
CONFIDENCE REMAINS
Caterpillar announced second-quarter revenues
of US$10.3 billion (9.24 billion) a 16% decrease
year-on-year. The US equipment manufacturer said
the decrease in its revenues was primarily due to
lower sales volumes, resulting from continued weak
commodity prices globally and economic weakness
in developing countries.
PROFITS UP
Operational net profit at German-based contractor
Hochtief increased by 25% year-on-year in the first
half of 2016 to 160 million, while second quarter
figures were up 29% to 88 million. The company
said its nominal net profit at 140 million was 30%
higher than the first half of 2015.
ON THE RISE
Heijmans has announced its half-year results,
revealing revenues of 946 million, representing
an increase of 2% compared to the same period a
year ago. The company said the increase was largely
due to considerable growth in revenues in property
development and to a lesser extent in infrastructure.
SMALL MARGINS
UK-based Balfour Beatty saw its revenues fall
marginally year-on-year in the first half of 2016
to 4.1 billion (4.77 billion) a decrease of 1.8%.
The UK-based company also recorded a loss of 11
million (12.8 million) in the first half of 2016.
SECOND QUARTER STRUGGLES
Swedish-based Volvo Construction Equipment
(Volvo CE) has recorded second quarter revenues
of SEK13.63 billion (1.43 billion), representing a
12% decrease from the same period a year ago.
The companys operating income was down 40%
to SEK810 million (85.01 million) for the second
quarter of 2016.

BOUYANCY
Weeks 27 to 34 proved a very
buoyant period for the stock
markets and most companies,
with only very few seeing
decreases in their share prices.
The market has proved to be
very unpredictable over the last
six months, mostly due to Brexit
the UKs decision to leave the
EU but genuine recovery signs
seem to have taken shape over
the last seven weeks.

NO MODIFICATION
Despite the new approach
promoted by the European
directives, the Romanian public
authorities have not modified
their approach and are still under
the governance of the lowest
price. The fear of sanctions
and allegations of lack of
transparency make the Romanian
authorities reluctant to follow the
new approach promoted by the
European directives.
To avoid delay in procurement
procedures, a bail has been
AMENDING CONTRACTS
Under the new laws, another
new issue is represented by the
possibility of having contracts
amended during the course of
their execution without a new
procurement procedure.
The amendments can refer
to the value of the agreement
or other aspects, including the
change of the contractor. So, a
change of the contractor can be
made if this option was provided
in the agreement, or when the
existing contractor assigns
to the public authority all the
rights from the subcontracting
agreements.
Finally, the new laws allow
the
contracting
authority
to make direct payments to
subcontractors. Such a solution
will ensure the completion of
public projects, which were in the
past blocked or delayed for several
years following the insolvency
of the main contractors. The
Romanian contracting authorities
and controlling institutions will
gradually adjust to the new rules.
In the meantime, the RSCL is
sustaining a long-term analysis of
the project with the purpose of
analysing the real final costs.
The RSCL offers assistance in
Romania in order to promote
a reliable and efficient legal
environment. RSCL will hold a
national conference on New
Perspectives in Construction
Law on 30 September, 2016, in
Bucharest.

RAISING AWARENESS
One of the objectives of this
campaign is, therefore, to raise
awareness regarding these
policies and programmes.
For employers, the campaign
aims to provide guidance and
specific tools.
The success factors of existing
OSH policies and actions will be
disseminated throughout Europe.
Various case studies are
presented and provide some
examples of achievements in
organisations of a variety of sizes,
including SMEs, and sectors.
For workers, the aim is to
PARTNERING UP
Because of the specifics of the
construction industry and the
challenges that it is facing in many
Member States in particular
the difficulty in attracting young
people which, combined with
an ageing workforce, can create
significant tensions in companies
and on the labour markets FIEC
decided to become a partner of
the campaign, as it did with the
previous campaigns.
In addition to raising awareness,
the objective is also to add the
topic to the agenda of the EU
sectoral Social Dialogue for the
construction industry, in order
to initiate tailored actions in
co-operation with our partner
representing the workers the
EFBWW (European Federation of
Building and Woodworkers).

STRICTEST REGION
With the new regulation, the
European market will become
the strictest regulated region
worldwide. This leads to additional
complexity for manufacturers.
It will remain an important
policy goal to align emissions
regulations in at least the highestregulated markets. At the same
time, CECE notes with concern the
developments within the internal
market in the EU itself, where
local authorities implement own
rules to combat air pollution.
It is of the greatest importance
that these rules respect the
harmonised EU emissions limits
and dont require additional
measures.
The environment is best
served by the deployment of the
latest emissions legislation, and
therefore a progressive renewal
of the oldest machines in use.
CECE will actively work with its
member associations to inform
of the best practice to take into
account when devising local low
emission schemes.

current K-Series models, with new features
such as a new, larger-displacement engine
that meets US Tier 4 and EU Stage IV emissions
standards. The new range also promises

With the excellent dealer network channel we have in the UK, I see
no big adjustments needed in the way we operate there, and it will
have little impact on our sales in the rest of Europe.
Vought said he believed the company was yet to establish a leading
market for its equipment sales, but said Europe was beginning to wake
up after suffering a recession.
He said, The European market has not fully recovered since the
recession. The biggest markets prior to the recession were in Italy and
Spain, and these were hardest hit in 2007. Though both countries are
recovering, these markets will find it a challenge to get back to the
sizes they used to be.
Today no one country in Europe really stands out in terms of
compact loader and attachment sales. Our strongest markets are in
Germany, France, the UK and Scandinavia, but we are expecting good
things from Italy in the near future.
Like Spain, which is also beginning to wake up after the recession,
the market in Italy has evened out since the recession. We also predict
growth in Eastern Europe, where infrastructure projects are continuing
to be funded by EU money.
Vought said he believed Europe was more diverse than the rest of
the world with compact loaders applications.
He said, In terms of market volume, the European market is not as
large as those in the US and in the Middle East and Africa. Europe has
not fully recovered after the recession and the market is probably a
third of the size it was before 2007.
There are some constraints in the market such as increased
regulation and the actual cost of doing business. But what does
distinguish the European market is its diversity with a much wider
portfolio of applications for compact loaders.

HCME says its new ZW65-6 has been
designed with an emphasis on the
environment and operator safety
Volvo CEs new L30G and L35G compact
wheeled loaders may be small, but they
promise powerful breakout and lifting forces,
as well as improved ground clearance, which
the company said rivalled larger machines.
The models are powered by the companys
D3.3M engine, which meets US Tier 4 Final
and EU Stage IIIB emissions standards,
without the need of a Diesel Particulate Filter
(DPF).
Volvo CE said its 5.5 to 6.1 tonne wheeled

tight spaces, delivering improved durability
and performance.

the versatility of the 4.7 to 5.4 tonne machines.
With an overall height of 2.4m, they are easy
to move on a trailer, and the ZW65-6 and
ZW75-6 have optional 30km/h travel speeds.
Attachments can be connected quickly and
easily with the electro-hydraulically operated
quick coupler.
Improved visibility of the fork attachment
from the cab promises greater precision,
which claims to have a positive impact on
safety on a variety of job sites.
Safety and visibility are also enhanced by the
360 panoramic view from the spacious cab.
Further high-quality design elements of the
new wheeled loaders include ergonomicallydesigned controls.
PRODUCTIVITY
JCB, meanwhile, said its skid steer loaders and
compact tracked loaders set the bar in safety,
fuel efficiency and productivity.
The company produces 18 models in
total, all of which are powered by Stage IIIB/
Tier 4 emissions standard engines, which it
said promised up to 16% fuel savings over
competitor machines.
Each model features JCBs Power Boom
design which boasts a single arm, rather than
the conventional two-arm skid steer design.
The company said this enabled the use of
a left side entry door, allowing the operator
to enter and exit the machine clear of the
attachment and loader arm, regardless of arm
position.
JCB said its Power Boom feature resulted
in unrivalled visibility at 270, with a 60%
advantage over competitive manufacturers,
which it said delivered clear visibility of the
operators surroundings.
The company said its ease of maintenance
was achieved thanks to its O-ring face seal
hydraulic fittings, as well as a simplified design
resulting in 38% fewer parts compared to its
previous machines.
The company also believes its tilting cab

service costs.
The company said that as a result of the

TRANSFORMATION
Katherine Broder, vice president of the Leica
Geosystems tools division, said that Leica
was transforming the construction tools part
of its business. She said that today, hardware
dominated this segment, with service and
software a relatively small part. In the future,
Leica plans to see these elements playing a
much bigger role.
Broder said, The iPhone app generation is
asking for more information, so there is a big
change coming, from 95% hardware now to
just over 50% in the future.
She added, There are three big areas
software and service, distribution and the
system offering. Its a fundamental change in
our mindset.
Part of Leicas plan to achieve this is a special
focus on rental, with full laser use in the rental
market leading to less downtime.
Detection is also a key part of the strategy.

WELL POSITIONED
Vitelli said, This is where the industry is
headed, and by focusing on these
advancements, we will be complementing
our BIM offerings and be well positioned to
meet the needs of our uses through the rest
of this decade and beyond.
Bentley recently announced general access
to the latest release of ContextCapture and
ContextCapture Center. This release is said to
enhance the accessibility, scale, and quality of
reality models that can be produced for use in
BIM and geospatial workflows.
The company said that it included new
multi-resolution mesh support for third-party
formats including Esri i3s, Google Earth KML,
SpaceEyes3D, OSGB (OpenSceneGraph), and
LODTreeExport formats.
There is also multi-resolution mesh support

REDUCING RISK
Skanska UK claims to be one of the first
construction companies to introduce an
insurance approved supply chain framework
that will facilitate the wider deployment of
drone technology on projects. It said drones
offered an innovative way of capturing data
that could significantly reduce risk and create
opportunities for more effective delivery.
The framework comprises three companies
which will complete drone-based work on
behalf of Skanska Resource Group, Skycap
and Cambridge UAV.
Skanska said each of these companies
provided different areas of specialist
expertise, gained from extensive work in a
range of different sectors.

The key features include its suitability for
different site conditions, its availability in
different models to meet a wide range of
piling needs and its suitability for a wide
range of piles including sheet piles, H-piles,
tubular steel piles and more.
The piling hammers are also excavator
mounted or excavator leader mast-mounted,
which are designed to work on a standard
excavator with normal auxiliary hydraulics.
They are also equipped with Movax Control
System (MCS), which the company said
gave accurate control, safe, flexible and easy
operation.
The company has also launched its new
Movax EML-12, which is said to be a leader
mast for piling applications with 12.3m of
effective leader length. Movax said the EML-12
was ideally suited for different types of driven
piles, preaugering or different techniques of
cast in situ piles.
The EML-12 can be mounted onto multiple
different crawler excavator bases, as piling
specific hydraulics and winches are
integrated to the Movax leader
mast itself. The company also
supplies a full featured
controlling and monitoring
system. The mast is easily
transported from site to
site, as it can be folded
down to size.
Another new launch from
Movax is the M-logbook
which is a documentation
and reporting tool, providing
essential data related to
piling works.
The piling information
collected by the Movax
Control System (MCS Pro)
is stored in the systems
excavator module.
The information is
then copied onto a
USB-memory drive and
transferred to a PC
equipped with the
M-logbook software
for further analysis.

The SQUID body includes three retractable
contact plates attached to displacement
transducers, and one instrumented cone
penetrometer for each contact plate. The
penetrometer cones move through the debris
layer and into the bearing material under the
weight of the Kelly bar and measure pressure,
while the transducers measure displacement.
The devices body connects by cable to
a wireless transmitter at the edge of the
borehole, where the transmitter then sends
pressure and displacement data to the SQUID
tablet.
The wireless data transmission to the tablet
where data is visualised then allows for the
person holding it to be positioned at a safe
distance from the borehole.
The SQUID Tablet displays, among other
information, the depth of the non-competent
layer and the maximum penetrometer cone
tip pressure, said Pile Dynamics.
Soilmec, meanwhile, has introduced several
key innovations and range updates, including
the new Blue generation SR-45, SR-75, SR-95,
SR-125 and SR-145 hydraulic drilling rigs for
large diameter piles.
Soilmec said that, based on the experience
and success of the first generation, the
new SR rigs had been designed to improve
productivity and operating flexibility, in
addition to operator comfort and safety.
The new rigs are installed with new Tier
4 diesel engines and are fitted with more
powerful and lightweight rotaries, with a
claimed torque increase of more than 20%
and pull up of more than 30%.

LOW AVAILABILITY
Low availability of used equipment is
particularly noticeable in the south of Europe,
with Spain in particular, he said.
In the post-economic crisis era, large
quantities of equipment from Spanish
businesses came into our auctions in order to
adjust to market conditions. This lasted up to
2012 and has slowed down since.
He added, however, that on the bright side,
since the beginning of 2016, Ritchie Bros
had seen an increase of Spanish buyers at
its auctions, looking to source good quality

INTERWOVEN PRODUCTS
At Ritchie Bros, Rijk said, This summer with
Brexit, I think everyone in the industry got
reminded how interwoven our products and
services are across borders. At Ritchie Bros,
we got a lot of questions about buying at
our UK auctions and witnessed an increase in
buyers from the Eurozone at our most recent
Donington Park auction, the strong Euro
currency forming additional stimulus to buy
equipment.
At IronPlanet, which held its first European
unreserved public auction earlier this year,
hosted in association with Caterpillar dealer
Finning UK & Ireland, Williamson said, It is
unsurprising that the UK is likely to experience
an excess capacity of equipment versus the
requirement for the foreseeable future as a
direct consequence of Brexit.
Every country requires substantial
investments in capital projects and an overall
positive economy to drive demand, but
unfortunately this is a luxury not every country
can have.
Euro Auctions felt that the type of equipment
that was selling well was to some extent
governed by the value of currency. Keys
said that any UK machines were much more
attractive to European buyers now than they
had been three months ago. Telehandlers,
and utility type machines like mid-sized and
mini excavators continued to be sought after,
he said.
Large infrastructure projects can be an
important catalyst for machine sales. Keys said
it seemed that there were many infrastructure
projects underway, but there was not so much
talk of new ones starting in Europe.
Poland had shown good signs of economic
growth over the last 18 months, as has Ireland,
