Stroke

What is a stroke?
A Stroke is caused when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted, resulting in cell death. The
proper functioning of the body is reduced due to the lack of the flow of the nutrients and the lack
of the flow of the oxygen (Department of heath and human services, 2013).
Why stroke is emergency:
Each and every year in the Australia, more than 700,000 people are affected by the fact of
stroke(Department of heath and human services, 2013). The rate is also increasing. It is not only
impacting on the individual health but it is also impacting on the economic condition due to the
reduction in the productivity in a massive rate. At the same time, stroke also raises the level of
the long-term disabilities. More than three-quarters of the strokes takes place among the people
over the age of 65 years. It also has been observed that stroke is the most common incident
among the young Australians and the middle-aged group rather than any other ethnic groups.
Thus it is a serious issue, to know the adverse effect and the consequences of stroke along with
the symptoms and its prevention.
It is important to learn about the overall idea regarding the stroke as it could be beneficial to coworkers, family members and friends.

Reasons for the stroke:

There are two major forms of the strokes. The first one is called the ischemic stroke. It is caused
when blood gets blocked at the vessel or the artery, and the blood flow does not occur for the
sufficient flow of the oxygen to the brain. About 80 percent of the strokes are ischemic. The
second type of the stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke which is caused due to rupture in a weakened
blood vessel in the brain (NIH, 2009). About 20 percent cases occurs this way.

Disabilities caused by stroke:
Patients may get affected by the stroke in different ways. They may encounter the poor brain
functioning, thinking problem or emotional problem. At the same time, patients may face the
problem of the paralysis. The normal lifestyle of the person gets hampered (Mosley, Nicol,
Donnan, Thrift, & Dewey, 2014).
What are the symptoms of the stroke?

Sudden weakness in arm, leg, and in the whole body

Sudden problem in vision
Sudden problem in walking and standing in a firm manner
Sudden pain in chest or brain

What should the bystander need to do?
If you are watching that someone has any problem among the mentioned symptoms, without any
delay they are supposed to call the emergency number call 000 (Department of heath and
human services, 2013).

Why is the stroke required to be responded fast?
The first type of stroke, ischemic strokes can be treated at the initial stage with the drug named t
PA. It dissolves the clots of the blood and maintains the smooth flow of the blood to the brain.
Thus, the brain starts to get sufficient amount of oxygen and required nutrients. So, as soon as
the stroke is detected, this drug is required to be offered to the patient in an immediate manner.
There is a time limitation to treat the stroke affected patient for the quick recovery (Aquilani, et
al., 2014). This time, the limitation is 3 hours. At the same time, it is also required that the patient
will get admitted to the hospital within 60 minutes of the first stroke.
Knowing the signs and act in the correct time is the most important aspect to be considered by all
of the members of society. Even it is the most important duty of the bystander to know the
symptoms of the patients and then act accordingly.
The benefit of the quick treatment:
The five-year study of NINDS (National Institute Neurological Disorders and Stroke) those
affected people are offered with the t PA drug within the window of three hours, they are likely
to recover in a quick manner and the expectation of no disability after the three months of the
incident(NIH, 2009). So, it is required to respond in a quick manner.
How the risk of the stroke can be reduced?
Prevention is the best step for the recovery from the stroke in an effective manner. But, still there
are few factors those are responsible for the increase in the risk of the stroke. They are:

High blood pressure: If one person has the high blood pressure, it is required by him / her
to consult with the doctor to prevent. Even if the patients are not facing any problems at

the current stage, it is better to prevent than the happening of any consequences.
High cholesterol: The high cholesterol blocks the gap in the artery and may cause the
stroke. So, it is required to take the necessary steps by performing regular exercise,

proper food habit and also with the help of the proper medicine.
The high rate of smoking: One should try to quit smoking, in order to reduce poisonous
nicotine to accumulate at the lungs and others parts of the body.

The high rate of diabetes: Diabetes should be controlled for maintaining proper body

functioning.
Increased rate of obesity: Obesity should be reduced in order to reduce the chances of

artery blockage.
Lack of exercise in the daily routines: The regular exercise helps to control obesity,

diabetes, and cholesterol.

Unhealthy consumption of food should be reduced so that the cholesterol amount and the
obesity can be controlled(NIH, 2009).

In order to avoid the risk of stroke, one needs to change their habits.
