Points on a problem set have the same weight as points on an examination.
The problem set points total to the same sum (150 points) as the three hour
exams. You have several days to complete this assignment. We encourage
students to work together on problem sets. You can get help in any discussion
section, in the Tutor Area, or during your instructors office hours. Because of
this, there is no reason for not scoring 100% on every problem set.
Problem 1. (two points) Balance the complete electron transfer equations
below. All are in acid solution.
(a) IO-(aq) + N2H5+(aq) I2(s) + NO3-(aq)
(b) S4O62-(aq) + NO2-(aq) SO42-(aq) + N2(g)
Problem 2. (two points) Balance the complete electron transfer equations
below. All are in basic solution.
(a) ClO3-(aq) + Sn(s) Cl2 (g) + Sn(OH)4(s)
(b) CrO42-(aq) + NH3(aq) Cr(OH)3(s) + N2 (g)
Problem 3. (one point) Balance the equation below for acid solution (youll
love it)
Cr2O72-(aq) + Fe(SCN)64-(aq)
Cr3+(aq) + Fe3+(aq) + CO2(g) + NO3-(aq) + SO2(g)
Problem 4 (a, b, c, d, and e). (five points) This refers to problems 1, 2, and 3
above. On D2L enter the number of moles of electrons transferred in the
balanced equations in Problems 1(a), 1(b), 2(a). 2(b), and 3.
Problem 5. (two points) Multiple choice (only one answer is fully
correct in each). Eo is cell voltage, not internal energy change.
