Center for Talent Development Northwestern Universitys Midwest Academic Talent Search

Northwestern University 617 Dartmouth Place Evanston, Illinois 60208 847/491-3782 Fax: 847/467-4283

2016 STATISTICAL SUMMARY

Recently, your child had the opportunity to take Explore, ACT, or SAT through Northwestern Universitys Midwest Academic Talent Search
(NUMATS) at the Center for Talent Development (CTD). Your child is younger than the typical student taking these tests and has had fewer
years of school instruction. Therefore, to score highly, your child must have learned a great deal either at home, by independent study, or by
special instruction, or have developed excellent reasoning and problem-solving skills. The purpose of this document is to help you see how
your childs scores compare with those of other bright students in his/her same grade level.

About the Explore, ACT and SAT Tests

Explore

ACT

SAT

Explore is a multiple-choice test

designed to measure ability in four
areas: English, mathematics,
reading, and science. The test was
typically given annually to thousands
of students in g r a d e 8. W h e n
looking at your childs score report,
remember this test is designed to
measure knowledge and skills not
necessarily taught at the elementaryor middle-school level. Scores that
seem low compared to those of
students in grade 8 may actually be
quite high compared to the scores
of other students in your childs
grade.

ACT is a multiple-choice test designed to

measure ability in four areas: English,
mathematics, reading, and science. ACT has
an optional writing section, but most NUMATS
participants did not register for this option.
(CTD, at the present time, does not use writing
scores for entrance into CTD programs.) The
test is typically given several times a year to
thousands of college-bound students in grades
11 and 12. When looking at your childs score
report, remember this test is designed to
evaluate academic potential of students much
older than your child and measures knowledge
and skills rarely taught in middle school.
Scores that seem low compared to those of
high school students may actually be quite
high compared to the scores of other students
in your childs grade.

Prior to March 2016, SAT was a multiple-choice

test comprised of critical reading, mathematics,
and writing sections. As of March 2016, SAT is
comprised of evidence-based reading and
writing (reading; writing and language arts) and
mathematics sections; the SAT essay is optional.
(CTD, at the present time, does not use writing/
essay scores for entrance into CTD programs.)
This test is typically given several times a year
to thousands of college-bound students in
grades 11 and 12. When looking at your childs
score report, remember this test is designed to
evaluate academic potential of students much
older than your child and measures knowledge
and skills rarely taught in middle school. Scores
that seem low compared to those of high school
students may actually be quite high compared
to the scores of other students in your childs
grade.

How to Read the Tables and Charts

You need to know just a few things to understand this report and to see how your childs scores compare with those of other NUMATS
participants. More than 15,000 students in grades 3 through 9 participate in NUMATS each year. This statistical summary is based on scores
from an even larger sample of NUMATS test takers, including all those from 2014 and 2015 (over 33,000 students). Using such large numbers
is a significantly reliable method of establishing percentiles for this years NUMATS test takers. All tables contain the following information:
Score: Explore scores range from 1 to 25.
ACT scores range from 1 to 36.
SAT scores range from 200 to 800.
N: The number of test-takers who received a particular score on a test
Rank: The percentage of students who scored at or below a particular score
Mean: The average score on the test

Using the Statistical Summary

1. Refer to your childs Long-Range Academic Plan (found in your online MyCTD Toolbox account) or the official testing agency score report to
find his/her test scores. Write down the actual score (NOT a percentile rank) in the first column of the table below. Find the section of tables
in this summary for the test your child took (Explore, ACT, or SAT).
2. Use the Statistical Summary tables to determine the rank (or percentile) of your childs scores when compared with scores of all NUMATS
students at his/her grade level. You can also determine how your childs scores compare with those of other boys or girls in his/her grade,
and with those of boys or girls in grade 8 (for Explore) or high school seniors (for ACT or SAT).

Students: This is all you need to see how your scores compare with those of other NUMATS students who took the Explore, ACT, or SAT.
Please remember that as a 2016 NUMATS participant, you are among the very best students in grades 3 through 9. Dont be surprised or
disappointed if you didnt surpass your peers. It is an honor, and a mark of your superior academic ability, just to be a participant in NUMATS.
