Abstract:
The experiment is all about finding out which element is an inorganic compound or organic
compound. We need to be able to identify the different characteristics of each compound by
using different methods. We aim to familiarize the compounds, for this is the starting point to
familiarizing Organic Chemistry.
Introduction:
Organic compounds and inorganic compounds have different characteristics. With that being
said, this experiment aims to determine the difference of their characteristics through the use of
different methods like solubility test, volatility test and etc. It also aspire to reach a more distinct
description of inorganic compounds and organic compounds. We aim to witness the greater and
visible difference of the said compounds.
Experimental Methodology:
There are various way to identify the distinctions of each compounds. The book have given a
few tests namely the Physical Property which is also known as solubility test, volatility test,
chemical propertyrate of reaction, fermentation, decomposition and combustibility test.

The procedure to physical property test is as follows. First, put a 10ml water to four test tubes
and label it as A, B, C and D. Second, carefully add 0.5 g of: sodium chloride (NaCl) to A,
potassium hydroxide(KOH) to B, naphthalene(C10H8) to C, and salicylic acid to D. Shake
gently and observe. Third, you have to repeat the procedure above but use carbon tetrachloride
(CCl3) as a solvent.
To use the volatility test, first you must separate two watch glasses and put a few drops of water
and ethanol(CH3CH2OH), and observe. Second, you must heat the two substances in a separate
evaporating dish simultaneously until a change is observed.
To know the chemical properties of the compounds, it is divided into 3 categories. First is the
reaction. You must mix a 1ml Barium Chloride (BaCl2) solution into 1 ml of Silver Nitrate
solution in a test tube, and observe. For fermentation, you have to mix a 10ml of fresh fruit
extract with one 10 g of sugar in a test tube and then add a pinch of yeast, set it aside for 48
hours and observe the changes. For decomposition, place a 1g sugar in a spoon and heat it over
the flame, observe. Repeat procedure using Sodium Chloride (NaCl). For combustibility,
separate a watch glass and place a 5 drop of ethanol (CH3CH2OH) and sodium chloride (NaCl)
solution. Then, place a lighted match on the two liquids and observe. Results and discussion:
Result and discussion:
We found out that the solubility is included in the Physical properties of the compounds. The
solubility of a compound follows a principle of like dissolves like principle. If the solvent is an
organic compound, the organic compound solutes will dissolve in it, in which the inorganic
compound follows the same. We have concluded that water (H2O) is an inorganic compounds
and the solutes that dissolved in it are KOH and NaCl. While, Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl3) is an
organic compound and the solutes that dissolved are naphthalene and salicylic acid (C7H6O3).
A compound is more volatile when its an organic compound because of they have a high vapour
pressure and a low boiling point. We found out that water is an inorganic compound and ethanol
(CH3CH2OH)is an organic compound.
Inorganic compounds have faster rate of reaction in the experiment. It is because the covalent
bonding in organic compounds do not readily react. Whereby, the reactions including Sodium

Chloride (NaCl) and chloroform (CHCl3) are faster to react. Fermentation only happens when a
yeast is present, yeast are microbes that break down sugars using alcoholic fermentation. They
are anaerobic (do not use oxygen) and break sugar down into CO2 and ethyl alcohol (ethanol). So
yeast make the alcohol. The rate of decomposition is faster in organic sugar thus making the
sugar turn into a brown sticky mixture. The combustibility of an organic compound is higher
than those of inorganic compound, making the ethanol light up and create small flames.
Synthesis:
We found out that the following are the organic compounds in the experiment are: Napthalene
(C10H8), ethanol, salicylic acid, and chloroform(CHCl3). And the inorganic compounds in the
experiment are: Water(H2O), potassium hydroxide(OH), silver nitrate(AgNO3), barium
chloride(BaCl2), sodium chloride(NaCl) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl3).
We also found out that the solubility of a compound depends on its solvent. An organic
compound is more volatile when it is in organic compound. The Rate of reaction of a compound
is faster when its an inorganic compound. Fermentation only also happens when yeast is present.
Decomposition takes place in organic compounds and the combustibility of a compound is faster
in organic compounds.
