Scatterplot Case Study

Name _____________________

Is there a relationship between fat grams and total calories in fast food sandwiches?
OBJECTIVES: Today we will look at how to use data and a scatter plot in making prediction in two ways: one is
by doing it by hand and making an estimate and the second is by looking at data and scatter plot on the
graphing calculator and making predictions.

Let's find out!

1. Prepare a scatter plot of the data.

2. Using a strand of spaghetti, position the spaghetti so that the plotted points are

as close to the strand as possible

3. Find two points that you think will be on the "best-fit" line. ( ,

) and (

5. Calculate the slope of the line through your two points.

6. Write the equation of the line in point slope form.

7. Solve the above equation for Slope Intercept Form.

8. Use this equation to predict the total calories for 22 grams of fat.( know if its
your x-value or y-value) Hint: look at your graph

Can we predict the number of total calories based upon the total fat grams?
1. Enter the data in the calculator lists. Place the data in
L1 and L2.
STAT, #1Edit, type values into the lists

2. Prepare a scatter plot of the data.

Set up for the scatterplot.

Choose ZOOM #9 ZoomStat. Graph shown below.

3. Have the calculator determine the line of best fit.

Q: Predict the total calories based upon 22 grams of fat.

Was the estimate from the previous side good or not?
