Project Title :
2projects - one on UX optimization of ecommerce portal and other on ideating digital
campaigns
Profile/field of work :
Digital Marketing
Challenges :
I was mostly on my own so drawing key information from the concerned people
was a challenge as they already had too much of work on their hands and availability was an issue.
Also internal conflicting ideas within the organization led to unwanted delays.
For example, with regards to UX optimization project reaching a consensus with
the IT department on the methodology to be followed (after being given a green
light by mentor) for the project was particularly hard.
Be clear from the beginning as to what exactly is expected out of you with regards to the project allotted.
Ideas and personal recommendations are important but more important is
reaching a consensus with different superiors involved in the project.
Also whatever you envisage with respect to project deliverables may not come
to pass due to various constraints so be prepared for backup plans to show value delivered in your project .

Challenges :
A sales and marketing stint comes with a lot of travel, so although the day ended
with extreme exhaustion, it was always a refreshing start the next day
There will be situations when no theoretical knowledge can solve what you are
facing in a live project. These are the most challenging parts of the internship
and also the parts where you learn the most
There were obviously going to be differences in the way the Middle-Eastern
market operates in comparison to the Indian market. These were slightly challenging to face in the beginning as different tactics needed to be employed in
order to gain information
Having two guides was extremely helpful, but quite an ordeal as well. Balancing
out the requirements and performing the work in a manner that satisfies both
the guides was quite challenging
To ask as many questions as possible. Every person you meet can give you a lead
for your ultimate solution provided you ask them the right questions
Try inculcating as much innovation in your project as you can

Challenges :
The main challenge would be to bend your thinking into the business aspect of
Castrol as soon as possible. The first week of the internship is very important
and should be spent vigorously understanding how Castrol works and what you
project actually is. The faster you understand it the faster you will start working
on your project.
The guide was usually busy so it becomes necessary to use the limited time I get
with him productively.
Major learning was on how the sales function works and the role of a management graduate in it. What is expected in this role.
Industry - Lubricants, Influencers, competition
Organization - Structure, S&D network, sales fundamentals
When it comes to sales project and market visits it is advisable to leave your ego
at home and come to work. You will not be judged by the customer on the basis
of your qualification but as a person. Treat all of your customers, from smallest
to biggest, with respect. Also get along with your sales representatives and
make good relations with other sales managers in the organization.
The guides may be very busy and will give limited time. Be careful on what you

Challenges :
Personally, the summer internship process was an eye opener. As my academics were
poor, my CV wasn't shortlisted for the companies I had dreamed that I would work
for. I felt really low and I was extremely under confident. This hampered my performance in the first GD I was shortlisted for. Thus, the next day I realized that I need to
keep my spirit up, to perform better. After which, I got shortlisted for a couple of companies and I made it to the interview round. Finally, I was shortlisted for Genpact on
Day 2.
During my interviews I spoke about things which I did not have complete knowledge
of, which worked against me. I could see my friends getting placed or opting out, this
was really terrifying and it was taking a toll on my confidence. But it is important to be
strong sitting in that room for days, if you want to sail through the process with the
desired results.
I learned another thing that my academics don't speak about my caliber. I doubted
myself a lot through the process, but my will to sit through it and earn a internship on
my own is what kept me going.

First couple of weeks things were difficult. I was really trying to understand the project
and what company expects from me. Senior company people are busy, they dont give

to them.
After a couple of weeks, things start to make sense and you understand what you are
supposed to do and whats expected. At this point do these two things, first get your
KPI cleared and in written from your mentor/guide. Second dont rush in, make a strategic plan for remaining 6 weeks and execute accordingly.
Few key things:
1. Company data is very important and confidential, companies tend to not trust interns with important data, find out a way to get the data. (Don't misuse it)
2. Make sure you start making your final presentation/report from day 1( figure of
speech) that means as early as possible. Dont leave it for the last week.

Mentors are also not clear about the objectives of the project and the goals may

Getting in touch and getting information from member outside your team is
challenging; many people don't show interest in helping you.
Make friends in your team from the first day itself as they provide immense help
whenever needed. Seek out recently joined MBAs as they will be more sympathetic with you, go out for lunch with your team rather than your batch mates.
Try to be as clear as possible with respect to the goals and objectives of your
project. they may keep changing through the duration of the project but clarity
of goals brings focus.
Ask for help when needed, do not wait till your mentor calls you. They expect
you to work like employees and will not treat you as trainees.
Companies are continuously evaluating your behavior, they want to hire people
who are a good culture fit, so try to mix well with your team.

Company selected for - Is gold relevant as an asset class in todays day and age.
Context: This was when gold was trading at multi year lows in the wake of mass
selling and a move to US$ etc. The reliability of gold as an asset class was being
questioned back in Q2FY16, if I remember correctly. The answer can be found if
you track gold prices off late. There has been a significant rally in gold prices now,
and the metal is back on the portfolios of many fund managers.
For the aptitude test, it is essential to be quick with arithmetic calculations, financial ratio analysis, accounting line items, the flow of the income statement
(ratios that can be derived from the income statement), layout of the balance
sheet and cash flow statements, characteristics of the balance sheet and income
statement for companies belonging to various sectors (sectoral nuances seen in
these financial statements) et al. Also, there may be a few questions based on
critical thinking, logical reasoning and decision making exercises.
For the group discussion, topics which deal with macroeconomics and related
current affairs are generally delved into. The critical part here is to make the
right inter connections between macro-economic variables and connect trends.

Credit Analysis of Financial Institutions (Banks)
Profile/field of work :
Credit Analyst - Summer Intern
Challenges :
Time management is of utmost importance, as working long hours may result in a
poor impression being created. The work assigned is extremely streamlined and your
approach to it also must be well structured. Preparing a detailed schedule of tasks for
a week, with anticipated effort per task could be very helpful.
There are multiple sessions conducted during the course of the 2 month internship,
and it is up to the intern to make best use of these. One means of doing this is to be
100% attentive during the sessions, as these are conducted by sectoral/industry experts, whose knowledge simply cant be matched by any secondary research resource
or database. It also creates a good impression to ask well informed and sound questions and get doubts clarified in these sessions, but an obsession with getting noticed is unhealthy and often unappreciated.
Basic and fundamental knowledge of financial concepts should be strong in order to
save time whilst in the middle of analysis. It is highly imprudent to get stuck trying to
figure the basics out while the rest of the floor is marching on towards meeting tar4.26

I have observed that the best interns are the ones who interact the most with the full
time employees on the floor, and who also deliver high quality work in a timely manner. The idea, as encourage by the Firm as well, is not to get restricted in your interactions to just your buddy, mentor or your cubicle mates, but reach out to the whole
floor. Qualms about disturbing employees or asking nave questions are completely
misplaced, as the employees look forward to answering your questions, striking up a
conversation and making you feel at home. This is how networking works.

Challenges :
Like every other aspiring entrepreneur, the inception of the startup is the biggest
challenge where I had to collect all the information, research and validate the data,
plan according to the validated observations and execute the plan.
Mine being a technology driven consumer product startup, acquiring the required
finance was one of the biggest challenges, where most of the Indian investors are
not yet ready to invest in the product manufacturing sector (mass manufacturing).
Basically the Indian startup ecosystem is not matured enough to invest in manufacturing sector where the returns would be very high, but the risk of not breaking
even could be a lot higher.
Must knows for
MBA I :
From a startup point of view, utilization of limited resources in minimal and smart
manner is the key aspect every entrepreneur should incorporate.
It is very important for an entrepreneur should learn and substantiate his/her
knowledge in every business field (finance, marketing, operations, HR) which would
later earn them considerable returns.
Every entrepreneur should make sure that their Plan of Action and the regular work
Timeline are going hand in hand without any work lag.
Should plan your finance considering some real life examples which are close to
your own startup.
Apart from having good communication skills, negotiation skills is one thing every
entrepreneur should be very strong in;

Profile/field of work :

Challenges :
Decision making under critical situations becomes a challenge when an individual is
not used to decide on his/her own. For this one has to be confident enough on the
research one has done and the suggestions he/she is going to recommend.
Two months seems very less a time to understand the problem statement and bring
out a strong solution after doing thorough background research.
Before jumping on the project it is better to talk to the team members and take
their feedback. Often it happens that some team member already has tried a few of
the options you are going to try.
Make as many connections as possible. This not only helps in getting good support
for the project completion but sometime also helps in bagging a PPO.
There is nothing wrong in admitting that "I don't know". Be truthful. Be patient to
new learning.
Try to find examples of everything you are learning with something you always experience. This helps you to learn faster and practically
Grab as many opportunities as possible to do things hands on
Learn a little bit of marketing basics
Professionalism is a must. So practise being on time.
Always know a way to sell yourself. No one is going to help you in promoting yourself other than you yourself.
