INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Project Title :
2projects - one on UX optimization of ecommerce portal and other on ideating digital
campaigns

Profile/field of work :
Digital Marketing

Challenges :

I was mostly on my own so drawing key information from the concerned people
was a challenge as they already had too much of work on their hands and availability was an issue.
Also internal conflicting ideas within the organization led to unwanted delays.
For example, with regards to UX optimization project reaching a consensus with
the IT department on the methodology to be followed (after being given a green
light by mentor) for the project was particularly hard.

Learning from the internship :

Be clear from the beginning as to what exactly is expected out of you with regards to the project allotted.
Ideas and personal recommendations are important but more important is
reaching a consensus with different superiors involved in the project.
Also whatever you envisage with respect to project deliverables may not come
to pass due to various constraints so be prepared for backup plans to show value delivered in your project .

Challenges :

A sales and marketing stint comes with a lot of travel, so although the day ended
with extreme exhaustion, it was always a refreshing start the next day
There will be situations when no theoretical knowledge can solve what you are

and also the parts where you learn the most
There were obviously going to be differences in the way the Middle-Eastern
market operates in comparison to the Indian market. These were slightly challenging to face in the beginning as different tactics needed to be employed in

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Project Title :
Content Marketing

Profile/field of work :
Analysis of Content on Social Media platforms

Challenges :
Personally, the summer internship process was an eye opener. As my academics were
poor, my CV wasn't shortlisted for the companies I had dreamed that I would work
for. I felt really low and I was extremely under confident. This hampered my performance in the first GD I was shortlisted for. Thus, the next day I realized that I need to
keep my spirit up, to perform better. After which, I got shortlisted for a couple of companies and I made it to the interview round. Finally, I was shortlisted for Genpact on
Day 2.
During my interviews I spoke about things which I did not have complete knowledge
of, which worked against me. I could see my friends getting placed or opting out, this
was really terrifying and it was taking a toll on my confidence. But it is important to be
strong sitting in that room for days, if you want to sail through the process with the
desired results.
I learned another thing that my academics don't speak about my caliber. I doubted
myself a lot through the process, but my will to sit through it and earn a internship on
my own is what kept me going.

Learnings from the internship :

The major learnings from my internship are:
1) Knowledge of tools used to analyzed content on Social Media

Project Title :
Trends in suiting & opportunities for polyester growth rate projections in Bhilwara &

Profile/field of work :
Textile Marketing

Challenges :
First couple of weeks things were difficult. I was really trying to understand the project
and what company expects from me. Senior company people are busy, they dont give
you time, but at this point talk and approach various people in the company and talk
to them.
After a couple of weeks, things start to make sense and you understand what you are
supposed to do and whats expected. At this point do these two things, first get your
KPI cleared and in written from your mentor/guide. Second dont rush in, make a strategic plan for remaining 6 weeks and execute accordingly.
Few key things:
1. Company data is very important and confidential, companies tend to not trust interns with important data, find out a way to get the data. (Don't misuse it)
2. Make sure you start making your final presentation/report from day 1( figure of
speech) that means as early as possible. Dont leave it for the last week.
3. Try and have written communication as much as possible. For example, I sent my
mentor mail twice a week, to tell him my progress.

Any other
comments :
1. Be absolutely thorough
with your HR blank, CV and
domain knowledge, in the
order of priority.
2. Company knowledge in a
must, be it their brands, verticals, recent acquisitions, their
financial details, important
names, or their mission, vision statement.
3. You will have to adapt fast

Learnings from the internship :

1. Learned a lot about textile industry.
2. Learned how to market to customers in B2B market.
3. Applied many concepts that I learned in class.
4. Excel is very important. Know and practice on excel as much as possible.

3. Be as well read as possible to stand out while handling multiple activities before

Learnings from the internship :

1. The 2 months of your internship will give you a real world idea of things that you
might have read in text books. Very often it will be completely different from what
you have learnt in class. Absorb it.
2. Company and industry exposure - a great opportunity to learn from industry stalwarts. Doesn't matter if your internship topic is not that great. You will learn a lot either way.
3. Network hard - Talk to as many stakeholders as possible. The more you talk to people, the more insights you gain and the better you will be able to address concerns of

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Try to talk to seniors and ask them how to do competitor bench marking. For a lot of

GD - The GD is one area for you to get the panelists' attention. No need to be
too aggressive. If the GD becomes unruly, try to maintain composure, get the
discussion back on track, make sensible points even if you get fewer entries.
Think of points which stand out and bring a different perspective.

Interview Make sure you read up about the company's history, their products and serv
ices, their latest year revenues/profits and any latest news about that company.
Be thoroughly prepared with HR blank questions; don't mug up and answer

Know your CV like the back of your hand; do not mention achievements about

Major part was spent in giving me situations related to my work experience and
knowing how would I proceed or act in those situations.

PPO

The first week will be challenging in terms of understanding the hierarchies and
roles of people working around you as also getting a grasp of the project given
to you.
Getting time from your mentor/guide is also very difficult, make the most of the
time he/she gives you.
Mentors are also not clear about the objectives of the project and the goals may
keep changing as they understand more about the complexities of the project.
Getting in touch and getting information from member outside your team is
challenging; many people don't show interest in helping you.

Learning from the Internship :

Academic courses impart superficial knowledge, companies are way ahead when it
comes to implementation of that knowledge. Hence it is necessary to keep reading
and understanding what is currently happening in the industry.

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Make friends in your team from the first day itself as they provide immense help
whenever needed. Seek out recently joined MBAs as they will be more sympathetic with you, go out for lunch with your team rather than your batch mates.
Try to be as clear as possible with respect to the goals and objectives of your
project. they may keep changing through the duration of the project but clarity
of goals brings focus.
Ask for help when needed, do not wait till your mentor calls you. They expect
you to work like employees and will not treat you as trainees.
Companies are continuously evaluating your behavior, they want to hire people
who are a good culture fit, so try to mix well with your team.
You will have to read a lot during the course of the internship related to your
industry, sector, company and project. Do not shy away from working late or
working after office hours.

Best Practices in Manpower Planning & Performance Management

Profile/field of work :
Human Resources Intern (HRLP), ABG Group Internship Program (GIP)- 2016

Challenges :

Identifying the prospective candidates for my Survey- Questionnaire viz. HR professionals across various sectors.

Scheduling time, w.r.t. meeting mentors for Project discussion and with Survey
candidates while conducting the bench-marking survey, due to varying timings.

There were 2 levels of evaluation:

Firstly we had an Internal Project Review, in-front of our Project Mentors and
Senior Manager from our Team (within the same business).
Secondly, we had an Assessment Centre at the end of our internship, covering a
span of two days. This included an External Project Review, which had Senior
Management personnel from ABG presiding as panelists. This was followed by 3
back to back GDs: Boardroom-based, Case-based and Negotiation-based, Group
Activity (Lego game), Psychometric test and HR interview.

Learning from the Internship :

Mapping the salient features of the Performance Management and Manpower

Planning techniques practices across various sectors (including apparel/ retail).

Research on the challenges faced in various organizations with respect to Performance Management and Manpower Planning.

Studying innovations in the sphere of Manpower Planning and Performance

Management.

Identifying the trends & changes over the years in Performance Management
System & Manpower Planning across various sectors through bench-marking.

Learning business trends for Madura Fashion and Lifestyle (MFL) and conceptualizing recommendations on the basis of the key findings of my project.

Learning about how processes in the Apparel- Retail sector function as well as
the Human Resources' alignment with key functions integrated with the organization, at large

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Network well within your team: with Project Mentors, Buddy, Co- interns, HR (Young
Talent Management Team) as well as SIBM Alumni, college faculty and fellow batchmates, as we may get valuable insights from all of the people we encounter while pursuing internship. For Benchmarking projects like mine, one has to ramp up communication and networking skills, such as using social media like LinkedIn and Facebook to
acquire contacts, hence social media profiles and CVs should be updated at all times.
We can also approach anyone within our internship circle for troubleshooting queries
and advice (both general and specific).

Analyze domestic travel and entertainment expenses to give critical business insights

Profile/field of work :
Financial Planning and Analysis

Challenges :
Extensive amount of data cleansing and processing was needed as the requirement of
the project. It was also challenging to find the accurate and necessary source of data
for problem solving. Overall the experience was pleasant but sometimes extended
hours was required to finish the deliverable. External research was needed pertaining
to problem statement and the industries those are associated with the problems.

Learning's from the internship :

Major learning's were on soft skill sides. I improved a lot when it came to excel and
analyzing huge data set with it. There was good amount of improvement in presentation skills also. Apart for that there were always small learning's here and there in
terms of corporate etiquette.

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Prepare thoroughly. Put in efforts to the point that is should be visible and beyond
doubt for anyone. Be confident when facing the corporate. Believe in team work and
team learning as it will help you grow along with others. Know your strengths and
weaknesses well as they will help you position yourself with respect to organization.
Read about the company before sitting for it .

Other comments
Read the seed material. At some point or the other it will be useful. Read news papers. More than anything else, the discussions in GDs will be around the current
affairs that concern the financial industry. The same can also be asked in the PI
rounds. Also the knowledge of the surroundings gives the opportunity to take the discussions in PI also in your favorable direction. Put some effort to know about the organization for which you are going to sit.

questioned back in Q2FY16, if I remember correctly. The answer can be found if
you track gold prices off late. There has been a significant rally in gold prices now,
and the metal is back on the portfolios of many fund managers.

PI questions for Companies :

Company selected for :

1. Interconnections between the 3 FS
2. What are the drivers of automobile purchases?
3. What is leverage? Give its formula and its interpretation
4. Inflation related questions (please remember that CPI & WPI are inflation indexes
based on historic data, and it is household inflation expectations which are also really
important in inflation watching & targeting exercises)
5. Basic HR questions Why did you choose Finance? What is unique about you?
Tips for MBA-I for the Selection Process:

For the aptitude test, it is essential to be quick with arithmetic calculations, financial ratio analysis, accounting line items, the flow of the income statement
(ratios that can be derived from the income statement), layout of the balance
sheet and cash flow statements, characteristics of the balance sheet and income
statement for companies belonging to various sectors (sectoral nuances seen in
these financial statements) et al. Also, there may be a few questions based on
critical thinking, logical reasoning and decision making exercises.
For the group discussion, topics which deal with macroeconomics and related
current affairs are generally delved into. The critical part here is to make the
right inter connections between macro-economic variables and connect trends.

slide area as optimally as possible

Also, making a point or two which contains industry/regulatory catch phrases

may fetch you some points, but if employed at the right juncture and in moderation. Topics generally tend to be of a global nature, as the Firm will not restrict
itself to exploring India-centric topics. There may also be a case study given,
based on which a subsequent GD is conducted. A fair idea of financial management concepts (TVM, capital structure, cost of debt et al) may be necessary to
crack this. Relevant sectoral knowledge is also essential to relate well to the
case.
For the personal interview, one must be thorough in financial accounting, especially from the 3 financial statements perspective. Those with an accounting/
commerce (and to some extent an economics) background may expect plenty of
accounting fundamental related questions, along with questions about accounting standards (IFRS vs. GAAP); answering these will be the critical. Furthermore, questions related to interconnections between the 3 FS is critical. Ratio
analysis is essential, but not from a mere formula basis but from an application
perspective. You may be given a set of ratios or the FS of an unknown industry
and asked to attribute these statements to a particular based on the salient
trends. Thorough awareness of macroeconomic variables, their underlying interconnections, their current numbers and a future view regarding these variables,
along with the underlying rationale is a must."

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Project Title :
Credit Analysis of Financial Institutions (Banks)

Profile/field of work :
Credit Analyst - Summer Intern

Challenges :
Time management is of utmost importance, as working long hours may result in a
poor impression being created. The work assigned is extremely streamlined and your
approach to it also must be well structured. Preparing a detailed schedule of tasks for
a week, with anticipated effort per task could be very helpful.

There are multiple sessions conducted during the course of the 2 month internship,
and it is up to the intern to make best use of these. One means of doing this is to be
100% attentive during the sessions, as these are conducted by sectoral/industry experts, whose knowledge simply cant be matched by any secondary research resource
or database. It also creates a good impression to ask well informed and sound questions and get doubts clarified in these sessions, but an obsession with getting noticed is unhealthy and often unappreciated.
Basic and fundamental knowledge of financial concepts should be strong in order to
save time whilst in the middle of analysis. It is highly imprudent to get stuck trying to
figure the basics out while the rest of the floor is marching on towards meeting tar4.26

gets.
I have observed that the best interns are the ones who interact the most with the full
time employees on the floor, and who also deliver high quality work in a timely manner. The idea, as encourage by the Firm as well, is not to get restricted in your interactions to just your buddy, mentor or your cubicle mates, but reach out to the whole
floor. Qualms about disturbing employees or asking nave questions are completely
misplaced, as the employees look forward to answering your questions, striking up a
conversation and making you feel at home. This is how networking works.

Learning's from the internship :

The importance of FSA cannot ever be emphasized enough. It is the bedrock of

all analysis and one who can master this, but may be poor at dozens of other
different things, but will still come out trumps.
I developed an eye for detail which I previously lacked. This is absolutely essential when going through voluminous MD&A or the Notes, and while initially it
may seem tedious, it is this attention to detail that separates a good analyst
from a great one.
Communication skills are absolutely essential, both in the written and spoken
word. The fact is that when working for one of the worlds largest banks, they
will look for someone who can communicate well and carries himself/herself
smartly. Networking with the employees on the floor, helps build contacts as
well a friendships that you may count on later.
My presentation making skills were thoroughly honed during the last phase of
the internship. To make best use of the area on a slide, with absolutely no superfluous stuff included is a challenge. The idea is to include all the material details, and not just fancy graphs. Also I learnt to organize and structure a presentation to ensure as logical a flow of thoughts as possible in the presentation,
such that it can make sense to even a first time viewer. Also, I realized that taking the audience into consideration while making slides is a must I was presenting to a highly experienced team and hence decides on excluding a lot of
basic stuff while cutting to the chase.

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

If youre in finance, you are in for a long slog. The pay-outs may seem disproportionately small for the effort inputs initially at least, but financial services is an almost evergreen industry and one who obsessively focuses on continual learning will be the
one who does well. There must never come a time when you stop reading the papers
or slack off from revisiting your basic concepts, since the more thorough you are, the
more complex can be the problems which you can tackle. Also, talking to professionals
well placed in the financial services industry about career paths, related logical progressions and required skill sets will be helpful. There is no good answer, say to
whether you must do the CFA or the FRM; it is a personal choice which must be made
based on the kind of learning that you need to achieve your goals. These certifications
are not to be treated as a launch pad to a better job but a means to accrue more
knowledge which will then get you that dream job/profile.

Challenges :

Like every other aspiring entrepreneur, the inception of the startup is the biggest
challenge where I had to collect all the information, research and validate the data,
plan according to the validated observations and execute the plan.
Mine being a technology driven consumer product startup, acquiring the required
finance was one of the biggest challenges, where most of the Indian investors are
not yet ready to invest in the product manufacturing sector (mass manufacturing).
Basically the Indian startup ecosystem is not matured enough to invest in manufacturing sector where the returns would be very high, but the risk of not breaking
even could be a lot higher.

MBA I :

Every aspiring entrepreneur should

stage)

Learnings from the internship :

From a startup point of view, utilization of limited resources in minimal and smart
manner is the key aspect every entrepreneur should incorporate.
It is very important for an entrepreneur should learn and substantiate his/her
knowledge in every business field (finance, marketing, operations, HR) which would
later earn them considerable returns.
Every entrepreneur should make sure that their Plan of Action and the regular work
Timeline are going hand in hand without any work lag.

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Should plan your finance considering some real life examples which are close to
your own startup.

Challenges :
Decision making under critical situations becomes a challenge when an individual is
not used to decide on his/her own. For this one has to be confident enough on the
research one has done and the suggestions he/she is going to recommend.
Two months seems very less a time to understand the problem statement and bring
out a strong solution after doing thorough background research.

Learnings from the internship :

Before jumping on the project it is better to talk to the team members and take
their feedback. Often it happens that some team member already has tried a few of
the options you are going to try.
Make as many connections as possible. This not only helps in getting good support
for the project completion but sometime also helps in bagging a PPO.
There is nothing wrong in admitting that "I don't know". Be truthful. Be patient to
new learning.

General advice /pointers to MBA I :

Try to find examples of everything you are learning with something you always experience. This helps you to learn faster and practically
Grab as many opportunities as possible to do things hands on
Learn a little bit of marketing basics
