Freeholders honor VMS Trailblazers Club

Camden County
Freeholders present
club with proclamation
for Voorhees trail work
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The Voorhees Middle School
Trailblazers Club started about a
year-and-a-half ago with the simple goal of building new hiking
trails in Voorhees Township.
In June, the club unveiled its
first completed project with a
path called the Viking Trail behind VMS to connect to a trail in
the nearby Stafford Tract open
public space land.
Now, that path has taken The
Trailblazers beyond the woods behind VMS and all the way to a
meeting with the Camden County
Board of Chosen Freeholders,
where the freeholders commended the club on its work.
At the freeholders Sept. 15
meeting, which rotates monthly
and was held at the Voorhees
Town Center, Freeholder Susan
Shin Angulo presented the club
with a proclamation thanking the
group for giving back to the local
community.
It was a great idea and they
will continue to build trails,
Shin Angulo said as she praised
the work the club had already
completed.

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

Camden County Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo, far left, presented the Voorhees Middle School Trailblazers Club with a proclamation at the
freeholders Sept. 15 meeting honoring the club for its work to create hiking trails throughout Voorhees. Far right is club leader and VMS
teacher David Thompson.
In return, VMS social studies
teacher and club leader David
Thompson thanked the freeholders for the award, and he also
gave thanks to the Voorhees
Township Committee for working
with the Trailblazers hand in
hand by granting permission to
work on land the township owns.

According to Thompson, the

original idea for the club sprang
from a problem he and his wife
faced when they wanted to incorporate more walking and hiking
into their lives and found themselves traveling to neighboring
towns to find trails.
When Thompson happened to

mention the issue offhand to his

class one day, he surprisingly
found several willing students
who wanted to put their minds together to fix the problem.
Throughout the following year,
the club held weekly meetings
during the fall and spring where
members could put their heads

together and design, and eventually build, their first trail.

When asked if he ever thought
the club would evolve this far,
Thompson said he had no idea.
I thought this was something I
might be able to do informally

Ask about "FUNCTIONAL DRY NEEDLING" for the relief of Neuromuscular Dysfunction

The Camden County Freeholder Board recently unveiled a new

technology that makes the Camden County Communications
Center one of the first 911 Call
Centers in New Jersey to have the
ability to accept text messaging.
The county has collaborated with

the state Office of Emergency

Telecommunications Services as
well as wireless telephone
providers to make Text-to-911 a
reality.
It is important for the county
to utilize the latest tools to ensure
the safety of our residents, said
Freeholder Jonathan Young, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Safety. It was
imperative for us to have this ability, in light of the unknown variables that can affect a victim in a
multitude of incidences where
using a phone is not an option.
Residents who may have difficulty making a phone call in an
emergency situation can text 911
and receive follow up texts from
the county communications center. It is also useful if you have
texting capabilities but not phone
reception. This service, which
works like a regular texting
thread, is received in the radio
room by a public safety telecommunicator and dispatched once
contact has been made.

The communications center

has been using the service in a
beta format since March and has
fielded more than 100 text messages for service. Now, the system
is live and operating outside of
the beta format, providing an essential tool for law enforcement.
The system can also triangulate
text messages to give a radius, not
an exact address, from where the
communication was created.
Nevertheless, as popular as texting is for standard communication today, the Camden County Department of Public Safety is asking that anyone that can use a
phone to call should always make
that a priority and text only if you
are unable to speak to a dispatcher.
Texting is one of the primary
forms of communication today,
Young said. This is also an effective tool for individuals who are
hearing impaired and gives first
responders more intelligence on
public safety incidents. In short,
always call if you can and text if
you cant.

The Camden County Board of

Freeholders Addiction Awareness
Task Force is continuing to sponsor free trainings in Voorhees on
how to administer the opiate-antidote naloxone to help reverse an
opioid or heroin overdose.
The New Jersey Overdose Protection Act allows doctors in the
state to prescribe naloxone to
members of the public who might
someday be in a position to assist
someone going through an overdose. The law eliminates criminal
and civil penalties for those who
administer naloxone, so those
who complete the training classes
will receive a free naloxone kit.
Classes will take place on the

Bridging the Gap affords

students chance to graduate
from college with less debt
A newly announced partnership between Camden County
College and Rutgers UniversityCamden will allow income-eligible students to graduate from college with a smaller amount of
debt.
Camden County is the only
county in the state to work with
the four-year university in offering this program to its residents.
The program called Bridging
the Gap will transform access to
a Rutgers degree by helping New
Jersey families dramatically reduce their college cost by waiving
tuition in full or by half.
Students who earn their associates degree from Camden County
College and are transferring to
Rutgers University-Camden are
eligible for the program. Families
with an adjusted gross income of
$60,000 or less will receive a grant
covering all of their tuition and

the general campus fee not already covered by federal and/or

state grants.
Families with an AGI of $60,001
to $100,000 will receive a grant
covering 50 percent of their remaining tuition and the general
campus fee after any other needbased federal and/or state grants
are applied.
In the fall of last year, Camden
County College implemented
Rutgers at CCC. This program
allows students to earn a two-year
associates degree at Camden
County College, then transfer
seamlessly to more than 40 programs at Rutgers-Camden for a
four-year degree with a choice of
completing their coursework at
Rutgers-Camden or remaining at
Camden County College. This
program has already allowed students to save an average of $20,000
in tuition costs.

BEFORE MIKE FRIEDMAN MOVED TO VOORHEES, TOM FANELLI

WAS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN VOORHEES
As Voorhees Planning Board Chairman, Tom led the way in approving the $500 million dollar state
of the art Virtua Medical Campus, which has created over a 1,000 new jobs, resulted in millions
of dollars in new tax ratables, led to a $10 million dollar sewer upgrade at no cost to taxpayers
and turned Route 73 in Voorhees into the Medical Mile.
Tom also approved the new Voorhees Town Center turning around the once failing Echelon Mall
into Restaurant Row and protecting surrounding homeowners from an unwanted Wal-Mart in
their neighborhood.

in our opinion

Our state needs fixing

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

But increasing income taxes to pay for shortfalls is not the answer

Richard Donnelly
ceo of newspaper media group

heres no doubt that New Jersey needs a financial fine-tuning, to say the least. Our state
is in debt, its credit rating has been
downgraded several times in Gov.
Christies tenure in Trenton and the
Transportation Trust Fund is in crisis
mode.
Theres no doubt that an easy fix is
out of reach, unless we band together
as a state, win the Powerball and Mega
Millions lotteries back to back, and
then donate all that money to our state
government. Even then, we might
come up short of what we need.
Theres little doubt that in someway,
somehow, the residents of New Jersey
are going to have to pitch in financially to help fix the problem. What form
that fix is well, thats anyones
guess at this point.
But one thing we particularly dont

Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on Gov.
Christies decision to end the reciprocal
tax agreement with Pennsylvania? Share
your thoughts in a letter to the editor.

agree with is forcing an increase in

any part of income taxes as a solution.
Earlier this month, Christie ended
New Jerseys reciprocal agreement
with Pennsylvania that allowed residents who worked on the other side of
the river to pay taxes where they live
instead of where they work.
Some estimates say New Jersey
could earn an additional $180 million
in revenue from Pennsylvania residents who work here, but it will also
be quite the hit to most of our residents who work over there.
The Senate Majority Office estimates that the 100,000 Jersey residents

who earn less than $110,000 per year

working in Pennsylvania will pay
about $1,000 more per year in income
taxes.
One could argue that the $180 million in revenue New Jersey will gain
far exceeds the $100 million total some
will lose is worth it. But is it really fair
that these specific 100,000 residents
bear the brunt of that trade-off ? It
doesnt seem so to us.
We recognize that something creative does need to be done to fix New
Jerseys atrocious financial health.
Our credit rating needs to improve,
and the TTF needs to be replenished
so our road projects can resume.
But relying on income tax increases,
of any sort, is not the right answer. We
would much prefer a boost in consumption taxes, such as the proposed
hike in gasoline tax.

Voorhees Animal Orphanage Woofstock is Sept. 24

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage will
hold its 20th Annual Woofstock Festival on
Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
at Connolly Park (rain date is Saturday,
Oct. 8). It is the biggest fundraising event of
the year for the orphanage. This year, the
Camden County Freeholders are partnering in the event.
Woofstock will feature festivities for animal lovers of all ages and their leashed
pets, including pet contests, vendors,
music and a food court. There will be an
alumni parade, police K-9 demonstration,
basket raffle, microchipping for $25 and appearances by the Joseph A. Ferko String
Band, Sara James Music Foundation, Master Chef Joseph Poon and animal communicator Dr. Liz Severino.
Admission is a $2 donation. Children
under 5 are admitted free.

The Animal Orphanage is dedicated

to enhancing the
quality of life for animals and people
through
compassion, respect and education. A nurturing
environment of caring and commitment
is evident in everything it does.
Since 1988, the Animal
Orphanage
Michael
has been providing
Mignogna
shelter, food and
medical care to MAYORS MESSAGE
stray and unwanted
animals until permanent homes can be
found. Each year, the Animal Orphanage

takes in nearly 1,500 abandoned, unwanted

stray and owner relinquished animals and
rescues hundreds of adoptable animals
from high kill shelters along the east coast.
All of these animals would have been euthanized. Every animal in the shelter receives individual consideration, whether
the animals are healthy, elderly, sick or injured. The shelter and its volunteers care
for approximately 150-200 animals on a
daily basis.
Programs include an animal shelter and
adoption center, a re-homing program, a
foster care program, a mandatory spay and
neuter program, volunteer opportunities
and humane education classes for school
children and the general public.

Re-elect Mike Friedman
for township committee
We need Mike Friedman and
people like him in all township
committees.
He is like a lighthouse in the

of matters relating to the running
of Voorhees Township.
He shines the light on matters
that would otherwise be pushed

There is a total imbalance in
the township committee. We need
at least two Republicans in the
township committee dominated
by Democrats for years. The
spending is out of control.
The mall has gotten worse

under their stewardship. They

have let Sears be demolished and
let JC Penny move out. Target
should have been put in place of
Sears rather than building another ugly box store right on White
Horse Road.
The Genaurdi plaza is totally
empty thanks to their high taxes.
They approved the ugliest of
buildings to be constructed on
Cooper Road.
The roads have been in pathetic condition all around Voorhees
and especially around the mall.
I have called for more than a
year for this to be fixed.
They were to sell the Voorhees
Township original building, and
we have no update on that either. I
dont see why they could not have
just upgraded their trailers and

left things right there.

Wake up Voorhees Township
residents.
We cannot go on like this. Reelect Mike.

for the award, which was really
nice because they were a big part
of this, Thompson said. Most of
them were founding members of
the club."
As for future projects, Thompson said he was optimistic the
club would keep going. He said
the club is looking at creating a
trail toward Connolly Park.
We have more good things in
store. We'll keep building trails,
and hopefully people will come
out and use them," Thompson
said.
With that in mind, Thompson
once again invited the public to
stop by when VMS isnt in session
and use the Viking Trail.
The trailhead is right behind
VMS, right off by the right edge
of the baseball field. Tell everybody to come on out and use it,
Thompson said. It's there for
use, and it's always cool back
there. Even on the hottest day, it's
almost completely shaded so it's
nice."

Serious About

LETTERS
stare at a screen for 45 minutes to
an hour and a half. Staring at a
screen for that long? Thats not
very good for your health.
If PARCC is here to stay, can we
at least listen to music or wear
our favorite good-luck charm?
Like for example, say I have a
green fake mustache that gives
me good luck. Why cant I wear
that? It could help me think and
do better. I cant write cheats on
that, and I cant even cheat! We
dont even know the questions to

the test! And its not like your

playlist is going to be like the
square root of four is two, or let
the teachers know what topics are
going to be on the test so they can
teach them and the students will
know them! The teachers are always so confused every year I
take the test, and then some of
the computers have problems so
then the teachers dont know
what to do and call the tech person in the school.
All Im saying is that PARCC is
too hard and we should go back to
ASK which is even healthier for
you because youre staring at
paper instead of a computer.
