Senses:
Vision:
o Sense you depend on the most
o Structure of the eye:
Cornea-transparent covering of the eyes
Iris- the colored part of the eye that
regulates the amount of light entering
the eye
Lens
Retina- innermost area of the eye,
where the image is received by rods
(specialized cells in the eye that are
sensitive to light) and cones
(specialized cells in the eye that are
sensitive to color)
Optic nerve
o Pathway of vision- light passes through the
pupil to the lens, where the light rays are
redirected as the image that strikes the retina
o Power of accommodation- the ability of the
eye to focus on objects at various distances
because of changes in the shape of the lens
o Caring for your eyes
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight
without wearing sunglasses
Always wear eye protection when
working in any situation where there is
the possibility of flying debris or
splashing of toxic chemicals
Dont rub your eyes when there is
something in your eye (you can scratch

your cornea)

Outer ear (auricle)- the external part of
the ear; protects the hearing structure

Touch:
o Different types of receptors in the skin pick
up sensations and send signals to the brain

Smell:
o Receptors stimulated by chemicals
Olfactory area in nasal passage detects

Information is transferred to brain for
interpretation
Closely linked to taste
Protects you from rotten food
o Caring for olfactory structures

o Taste buds in the tongue are stimulated by
chemicals
o Tongue can detect five flavors

o Rare hereditary condition

Summary:
Your senses add to your enjoyment of the world
Your senses also protect you from danger
It is important not to take senses for granted
Take care of the structures that provide your sensory contacts
