Franklin earlier in the school

“We will not serve
breakfast or lunch but
students can bring a sack
lunch which will be eaten
under a tent outside,” Ulm
said.
Buses will also not run.
Classes will be dismissed
at Franklin at 1 p.m. Friday.

Huysman says it’s time

DELPHOS — Many peo-
ple find a career path from
life experiences when they
are young. It was no differ-
ent for St. John’s Elementary
School language arts and reli-
gion teacher Ron Huysman.
Huysman chose a teaching
career after the tutelage of
his high school teachers, who
were nuns, and coaches Bob
Arnzen, Ed Zalar and others.
“The Sisters of Notre
Dame are the most caring
people,” Huysman said.
“They wanted us to learn and
they passed that passion on to
me. The coaches were very
supportive and also urged me
to become a teacher.”
Huysman has spent his
entire career in Catholic
schools and wouldn’t have it
any other way.
“It was important for me
to teach in a Catholic set-
ting. I liked what I got from
my education and wanted to
carry that on,” Huysman said.
“I have been a teacher and
a principal at other Catholic
schools and was happy to
come back to my alma mater
to finish out my career.”
After 35 years in educa-
tion, Huysman said he knows

at a time

DELPHOS — Armand
Young, 46, could be mis-
taken for one of the homeless
and downtrodden he strives to
help every day on his 4,200-
mile journey across the coun-
try. His hair is longer than
most; his clothes and shoes
are worn. He walks with a
staff covered in patches and
adorned in U.S. flags.
Upon closer inspection,
one can see the care and com-
passion in Young’s eyes. The
signatures on the flags are of
those he has met in his travels
who pledge to perform an act
of kindness within 24 hours
of meeting him. The patches
are from fire, police and other
safety entities.
Young is walking across
America to promote acts of
kindness in what he says is an
attempt to negate the hatred
for his country displayed in
the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
“I want everyone to know
that America is a great coun-
try and a beautiful place to
live,” Young said. “I want to
turn the lives lost in 9/11 into
Huysman
it is time for him to retire.
“You just know,” he
said. “I have loved every
minute of my career and
enjoyed the other teachers
and administrators I have
worked with. It’s time now
to retire and start another
chapter in my life. I leave
here feeling good about
what I’ve done.”
Huysman added that he
has seen six principals come
and go at St. John’s, all of
whom had great strength and
character, and the staff and
administration are dedicated
to Catholic education.
The father of two has seen
many changes in education
as well as society but one
thing remained constant —
the kids and the fulfillment
from teaching.
“Sometimes the ones who
were the most difficult in the
classroom are the first ones to
say hi and thank you. That’s
why I became a teacher.”
What students face today
concerns Huysman.
“I don’t envy these kids and
what they have pulling at them
every day,” he said. “Kids have
a lot to adjust to and are under

change the world.”
He left on his journey on
April 16, 2007, from Santa
Monica Pier in California.
Traveling 10-30 miles per day
with 102 pounds of gear, he
seeks lodging where he can
and depends on the kindness
of others. Fire departments
have stepped up and taken
his backpacks from station to
station on his route along the
historic Lincoln Highway.
“I have stayed in the homes
of celebrities, in governor’s
mansions, at fire and police
departments and dug trenches
in the Mojave Desert to sleep
during the day and walk at
night,” Young said. “God put
this in my head to do this. I
promised my mom I would
make this the biggest and
best walk ever.”
Young took a hiatus in
November to sit by his moth-
er’s bedside in California as
she died. A quick trip home
to West Virginia to spend
time with his wife followed,
then he was back on the road
on May 20 in Plymouth, Ind.
As one can imagine, the
trip has not been without mis-

with divorce and step-families.
It’s their reality.”
The long-time educator
has also seen many changes
in Catholic schools and in
education in general.
“You have a lot more

technology is unbelievable.
The kids are not afraid of
it; they go right to it,” he
continued.
As for the future, Huysman
will lend his hand as a sub-
stitute teacher and his wife,
Barb, “has a list,” he joked.
She still works part-time and
he hopes they can squeeze
in weekend trips and visits
with their children. Their son,
Brian (Michelle), is a cap-
tain in the U.S. Marines and
their daughter, Katie (Roger)
Lehman, lives in Glandorf
and teaches in Fort Jennings
and Miller City.
He is also looking forward
to vacations in California,
Washington, D.C., and Las
Vegas.
His advice to new teach-
ers: “You have to stay posi-
tive — in good times and
bad. You can’t always see
the results of your work right
away but you are affecting
people’s lives.”

Several commercial properties in downtown Delphos are being renovated by John
Lehmkuhle, who is in the process of acquiring several of the buildings. His intention
is to restore the facilities and lease them out for additional local businesses. Details are

will ultimately be repaid.
But Geithner praised the
company’s decision to walk
away from the Prudential
offer.
“AIG is now free to pur-
sue a bunch of other options
to help maximize the return,
reduce any risk of loss to
the taxpayer,” Geithner told
reporters at the Treasury
Department.

state in which any killing
occurs,” wrote Alston, a New
York University professor.
The report to the U.N.
Human Rights Council puts
unwanted scrutiny on the
intelligence operations of
the United States, Israel and
Russia, who Alston says are
all credibly reported to have
used drones to kill alleged
terrorists and insurgents.

on the collapsed deal other

action or program, this agen-

said CIA spokesman George
Little. “The accountability’s

for anyone to suggest other-
wise.”

NEW YORK — A horse-
player since his teens while
growing up in London, Richard
C. Pell could be on the verge of
the greatest score of his life —
winning the Belmont Stakes.
Just two years after buying
his first thoroughbreds, Pell is
the proud owner of Fly Down,
the Dwyer Stakes winner who is
the 9-2 third betting choice for
Saturday’s $1 million Belmont.
“It’s absolutely unbeliev-
able,” said the 55-year-old Pell,
chief investment officer for a
New York-based asset manage-
ment company. “You hope you
get to the races and win some
nice ones but with my first
crops of horses to have one in
the Belmont?
That’s where Nick Zito
entered the picture. The first
time Pell saw Zito, it was two
years ago outside the racing
office at Belmont. He asked the
Hall-of-Famer if he would train
his horses one day. Of course,
Pell didn’t own any at the time.
“He looked at me very quiz-
zically, gave me his number
and said, ‘Call my barn’.” Zito
didn’t return numerous calls
until Pell finally got word to
him that he was ready to spend
$1 million.
That worked. Quickly. Zito
went to the 2008 Keeneland
sales and one of the eight horses
he picked out for Pell was Fly
Down, a son of 2003 Horse of
the Year Mineshaft who sold
for $80,000.
“It’s working out pretty
well,” said Pell, a New Yorker
who eventually returned to the
United States, graduated from
Cal-Berkeley, got his MBA at
NYU and has been a money
manager for more than 20
years. “I figured the money I
put into racing was flushing it
right down the toilet. But Nick
says to me, ‘All we need is one
good horse, Rich.’ And if Fly
Down turns out to be as good
as he might be, I actually will
be making money — and hav-
ing fun.”
Before enrolling at NYU,
Pell also was a private investi-
gator and a poker player.
Zito also has the Belmont
favorite in 3-1 choice Ice Box,
giving the trainer two of the
three top picks in a race he has
won twice with long shots —
Birdstone in 2004 at odds of
36-1 and Da’ Tara in 2008 at
odds of 38-1.
“Obviously, there’s more
pressure, anxiety,” he said of
his favorite’s role. “On the other
hand, if they run well, you have
to be content.”
A field of 12 was entered
Wednesday for a Belmont that
will be run without Derby win-
ner Super Saver or Preakness
winner Lookin At Lucky.
“Nick’s going to be
tough to beat,” said trainer
Kiaran McLaughlin, who
will try with 10-1 choice
Uptowncharlybrown. “But we
feel good about our horse. He’s
ready.”
McLaughlin took advantage
the last time the Derby and
Preakness winners didn’t run in
the Belmont, winning in 2006
with Jazil.

As Mickelson was com-

the Memorial’s founder and
host had a little chat.
“He said he’d dearly love to
win my tournament and I said,
‘Well, Phil, I’d dearly love to
have you win it’,” Nicklaus
recalled. “I sort of gave him
the line that Bobby Jones said
about St. Andrew’s, that no
golfer’s resume as a champion
is complete unless they win at

scored from second base on an infield
single by Ichiro Suzuki with two outs in
the bottom of the 10th and the Mariners
won their first extra-inning game of the
season over the Twins.
Just hours after Ken Griffey Jr.,
the greatest player in Mariners’ his-
tory, announced his sudden retirement,
arguably the player next in the pecking
order came through.
On the 11th pitch of the at-bat
from reliever Jose Mijares, Suzuki hit a
ground ball up the middle. Matt Tolbert
made a diving stop and attempted to
force Josh Wilson at second base. But
his flip to shortstop J.J. Hardy was late
and Langerhans never stopped round-
ing third and scored easily.

TORONTO — David Price became
the American League’s first 8-game
winner, Carl Crawford hit a grand slam
and the Rays rallied in the ninth inning
again, beating the Blue Jays.
Price (8-2), who has won six of
his past seven decisions, allowed two
runs, none earned, and nine hits in
eight innings.
One night after Blue Jays closer
Kevin Gregg walked five in the ninth as
the Rays came back from a 5-3 deficit
to win 7-6, Tampa Bay needed some
late heroics again, erasing a 2-1 lead
in its last at-bat.

NEW YORK — Nick Swisher and
Curtis Granderson hit 2-run doubles
in the second inning to back another
stingy start by Phil Hughes and the
Yankees handed the Orioles their sev-
enth straight loss.
Robinson Cano hit a 2-run homer
in the seventh and ran his hitting streak
to 16 games for New York, which had
14 hits. Jorge Posada returned to the
lineup after sitting out since May 16
with a broken bone in his right foot and
went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Fielding a nearly complete open-
ing-day lineup for the first time in sev-
eral weeks, the Yankees pounced on
Brad Beregesen (3-4) for six runs in 2
1/3 innings and beat Baltimore for the
seventh straight time.
Red Sox 6, Athletics 4
BOSTON — David Ortiz hit a 2-run
homer to help Boston rally for the
second straight game and Daisuke
Matsuzaka settled down to beat the
Athletics.
One night after scoring nine straight
runs to overcome a 4-0 deficit, the Red
Sox spotted the A’s three runs in the
top of the first and then scored the next

Woods is making
his return to com-
petition after sitting
out three weeks due
to a neck injury.
After a winter of
rumor and innuendo
in the wake of his
admission of marital indiscre-
tions, Woods has played spar-
ingly and at times poorly. His
swing coach, Hank Haney,
and he went different direc-
tions recently, too.
But that doesn’t mean
Woods is ready to step aside.
Or that he’s focusing only on
the threat of one player.
“There’s so many guys,”
said Woods, who has won
the Memorial a record four
times. “If we’re playing match
play or we’re playing matches
one on one, say, like (Roger)
Federer and (Rafael) Nadal
do, that’s a totally different
deal. We may be at the same
event but we may not all be in
contention at the same time.
Sweden, meanwhile, will be
playing in only his second
major semifinal.
Then again, let’s not forget
that Soderling is the only man
to ever have beaten Nadal in
the French Open: the Spaniard
was 31-0 for his career at
the clay-court Grand Slam
tournament before losing to
Soderling in the fourth round
last year. Soderling went on
to lose to Roger Federer in
the final.
Showing that his 2009
run in Paris was no fluke,
Soderling pulled off another
surprise by beating the top-
seeded Federer in the quarter-
finals Tuesday.
All of which is why people
are starting to look ahead,
thinking about the intrigu-
ing possibility of seeing a
Nadal vs. Soderling rematch
in Sunday’s final.

added his eighth homer in the seventh
to end a 4-for-26 slump. Bobby Abreu
hit his 500th career double and the
Angels had 14 hits to beat Kansas City
for the 11th time in 13 games over two
seasons.
Kazmir (4-5) helped Los Angeles
win for the sixth time in eight games
and stay close to the AL Central lead
after a ragged start to the season.
Rangers 9, White Sox 5
CHICAGO — Matt Treanor hom-
ered and drove in a career-high four
runs and the Rangers beat the White
Sox after losing Vladimir Guerrero to an
eye injury during batting practice.
Guerrero, the designated hitter,
was scratched from the lineup after
a ball he hit ricocheted off the cage
and struck him above the left eye. The
Rangers announced the 8-time All-Star
had “significant swelling” but X-rays
showed no structural damage.
Treanor capped a 3-run first with a
2-run bases-loaded double and led off
the third with his third homer. He was
also robbed in the sixth when right-
fielder Carlos Quentin raced back for a
lunging catch on his sacrifice fly.

ATLANTA — Omar Infante, replac-
ing the injured Chipper Jones, lined a
2-out, run-scoring single in the eighth
inning to back Derek Lowe’s best
outing of the season, leading Atlanta
to its eighth straight win, 2-1 over
Philadelphia on Wednesday.
The Braves finished off a 3-game
sweep of the defending NL champions
and increased their lead in the East to
2 1/2 games.
Lowe (8-4) went eight innings,
allowing six hits and one run. Billy
Wagner worked the ninth for his ninth
save. Kyle Kendrick gave up five hits
and a run in seven innings for slumping
Philadelphia.
Jones left in the fifth inning with an
injured finger. The team announced he
had inflammation in his right ring finger
and was day-to-day.
Dodgers 1, Diamondbacks 0, 14
innings
LOS ANGELES — Garret Anderson
hit an RBI single with two outs in the
14th inning and Los Angeles handed
Arizona its 10th straight loss.
Los Angeles won another pitchers’
duel. Matt Kemp led off the 14th with a
single and later scored Anderson’s hit.
The Diamondbacks went 0-9 on
their trip to Colorado, San Francisco
and Dodger Stadium.
Travis Schlichting (1-0) allowed
four hits over four innings of relief to
get his first major-league victory.
Edwin Jackson went nine innings,
tying a career high, in his first start
at Chavez Ravine since leaving the
Dodgers in a trade that sent him to
Tampa Bay in January 2006. He
allowed three hits, struck out six and
walked three.

Nicklaus played with
Mickelson on Wednesday and
watched him shoot a 6-under
30 on the difficult back side at
Muirfield Village.

play, though. He just drove it

But Mickelson has played

Woods hasn’t play much
at all in the past few months.
He took a week and a half off
after he was forced to with-
draw with pain in his neck
at The Players Championship.

thing,” Woods said. “The

SAN DIEGO — Adrian Gonzalez
hit a grand slam with one out in the
11th inning to lift San Diego.
It was the third career grand slam
and second career game-winning
home run for the All-Star first base-
man, coming on a 1-1 pitch from Raul
Valdes (2-2).
After Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled lead-
ing off the 11th, Padres right-hander Jon
Garland made the second pinch-hitting
appearance of his career, laying down
a bunt that Valdes fielded and threw
to third to get Gwynn. Jerry Hairston
Jr. singled and David Eckstein, who
singled in the tying run with two outs in
the ninth, was hit on the left knee by a
pitch to load the bases.
Gonzalez then homered into the
left-field seats.
The Mets wasted a second straight
strong performance by Johan Santana,
who has thrown 15 straight scoreless
innings in his last two starts but has two

HOUSTON — Carlos Lee hit a
2-run home run and Houston’s Wandy
Rodriguez snapped his 3-game losing
streak.
Rodriguez (3-7) pitched out of
bases loaded jams in the fourth and
fifth innings to secure his first victory
since May 12. He struck out a season-
high eight over five innings.
Lee hit his sixth homer of the sea-
son off John Lannan (2-3) in the third.
Lannan allowed eight hits and two
earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

ST. LOUIS — Chris Carpenter beat
Cincinnati for the eighth straight start,
allowing four hits in eight innings as St.

Brooklyn Bridge getting a $500 million makeover

NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Bridge has
been through a lot in its 127 years, and now
the New York icon needs a facelift.
The famous 1.1-mile suspension bridge is
getting a $500 million makeover, a project
that includes a complete repainting and the
repair of elements that were part of its original
construction.
Vice President Joe Biden joined Mayor
Michael Bloomberg Wednesday to mark the
beginning of the rehab, which is set to be
completed in four years.
The federal economic recovery act pro-
vided $30 million for the effort; the rest of the
funding comes from the city and other federal
sources.
Standing in front of an access ramp where
huge swaths of peeling paint exposed patches
of rusted steel, Biden said the makeover was
a “badly needed” upgrade for the beloved
bridge.
“This bridge is an emblem of what this
great country represents,” he said.
The bridge, with its two neo-Gothic tow-
ers and elegant steel cables, is one of New
York City’s most revered pieces of architec-
ture. Designed by engineer John Augustus
Roebling, it opened May 24, 1883, after 13
years of building at a cost of $15 million.
The East River span — the subject of
several books, a Ken Burns documentary and
countless songs — helped spur the growth of
the city’s outer boroughs. It also has played an
important role in major events throughout city
history, including on Sept. 11, 2001, when
a flood of people fled lower Manhattan by
walking across the bridge.
The structure has been spruced up many
times over the years, but not recently.
“It is the first major work on the bridge in
10 years,” Bloomberg said.
The landmark, traversed by 120,000 cars
and thousands of pedestrians and cyclists each
day, was last painted in 1991. The repainting
is expected to take the entire four years.
The existing coat must first be blasted off.
To minimize air quality issues, the blasting
and repainting will be done in enclosed units
that travel along the structure, above traffic,
and equipment placed on barges anchored to
the bridge above.
The new coat will be in the same sandy-
colored hue seen on the bridge now, a shade
approved by the city Landmarks Preservation
Commission and called “Brooklyn Bridge
tan.”
The other major update will be to the road-
ways that approach the bridge in Manhattan
and Brooklyn. Ramps will be expanded from
one to two lanes.
The city said slabs of pavement will be
installed in segments, and the steel decks on
the approach ramps will also be removed in
sections and replaced panel by panel with
precast concrete-filled steel, to reduce noise
from drilling and jackhammers.
Rusted railings in some areas of the
approach ramps — some that were part of the
original bridge construction — will be refur-
bished and reinstalled.
The bridge facelift is one of six infrastruc-
ture projects in New York City that received
stimulus funding.
Israel rejects international
